Alpha's Lab
Heh, I won't pretend that that pic is anything other than a bit sketchy. I just wanted to get a rough idea of something more interesting for the Outcasts.
Will try and rough up some more decent stuff soon, once the Uni timetable has settled down

Hey, you took 5 months to post! The least you could do it allow us 4 months to comment on it!
Actually, nice line work. Looking forward to the colors!

Anyway, I'm really digging the latest art, definitely screems Tech! My only complaint would be that I don't get why the (power?) cord on the bottom left of the pic hangs the way it does... Seems like it would either droop quicker when coming out of the armor or be stiffer overall... But that hardly takes away from the pic
I was sleeping!! And then I was working!! And then at work they actually made me do work!!!!

I really like the lines you did for Alpha and am looking forward to seeing how you colorize it.

Since you do color in photoshop... I would make a layer over this, connect the coils onto the body in several areas that are not symmetrical, kind of like one to the heart, one to the lungs, one to the neck, vital areas... You did some of this in one of the wrists, but the rest of the coils look like if I shot him in the back, he would shut down... or kicked him in the back of the leg.
It's coming along pretty cool, can't wait till you color it. You have an interesting coloring look, reminds me of colored pencil almost.
Good luck with your studies.
Sorry for the lateness, I was away for a week, and was barely near a pc... but anyway, what's the thinking behind this scene? Is he re-energizing? Like say the Borg do... is he being restrained while he does this? It kind of has that new multi-arm Iron Man 2 machine feel to me. Also is he being suspended? Cause I don't feel the weight of him drooping... I would have liked to have seen the arms bent a little, maybe one leg falling lower to show some movement. And all the coils here seem like an after thought, which I get, you wanted to get the armor right first.

Alphas a robot, so it made more sense for plates on the back to slide up or off for access ports. That, and it kept the picture less cluttered. I might still add more in later on (since I plan on going all out with this one )
As for context, he's plugged into the massive AES computer in the Corporation base (the SG im in on Union), basically semi out of body while his 'brain' runs around in the greater web.

Update;
Got the Colour flats down, and starting to paint on top of it.
Most of my work to date has always made rather heavy use of lineart. Its quicker, but also doesnt look quite as painterly as I would like at times.
While it works for stuff like my graphic novel, I wanted to do Alpha justice.
I got me a fair ways to go yet...

I am really liking the progress of Alpha, I can't help but feel he needs like hydraulic lift below his feet though.
It's certainly much better than I could do.
Consider this, you grab someone by the back of the shirt and lift them up...the torso tends to lean forward and curve down to the legs which hang slightly bent. Now if you have some sort of harness on and a solid metal connector plate or hand lifts you, you wouldn't hang in such a way, you would be much more rigid. There's sort of a disconnect in that your robot is hanging more or less straight up and rigid even though he's hanging from cables. His center of gravity isn't being properly represented. His right leg ought to hang a bit lower as a result of the weight of the connected cable. Bending his arms a little at the elbow will give you more of a puppet/unoccupied look. Conversely having the cables pull his arms out palms up will give him great pressence, palms down, helpless. I think that's more or less what everyone else has been trying to say.
Roxy On DA...Finally!
It is looking really good thus far, Alpha!

The problem I have now is I tried editing some of the cables in his back to being more taut, but it doesn't work. It looks way too clumsy. And theres not really any way I can edit the body itself now without pretty much doubling the ammount of work on this. Given I would like ti actually finish this one at some point, Its really bugging me on how to make it look better without taking a months on it =/

What are you coloring with? If you have Photoshop, I would use the warp tool. Here's an example...
1) I selected the right leg (facing) and elongated it using the warp tool
2) Added light shadows for the cables to show depth
3) Add grunge and desaturated it to give wall some "mood"
4) Copied the Head, and brought it down to show his shoulders more hunched
Hope you don't mind. These are just suggestions. Take it or leave it, no worries. I tried making the cables taught, but it would change too much... I think they're fine as you have them. Keep going, can't wait to see the finish...
Hmm....shifting that leg a little does do something quite good to the pic...and the head lower does help add some weight to it...
Yeah, I'm using CS4. I hadn't got around to even starting the background yet except for colour flats, I have Alpha and the background on two seperate layers see
I'll mess around more and see what I can do. Thanks for the critique =]

I'm liking it so far too. I don't think the cables could support Alpha without looking like part of a Newton's cradle. Perhaps chains could go straight down behind his head, or struts under his arms (like a forklift behind him). Neither idea is probably worth it at this stage, carry on fine tuning

Update:
Darkened the background base for more contrast, recoloured a few of the cables. Only the legs left to do with shading/highlighting on the bdy before the basis of that is done.
Then its on to fine detail, the background, and the all important glows and lighting.
Getting there. Nearly got rid of all the body lineart by painting over. Just requiring patience really.

You could always just put a robotic claw or pincers bracing under his arms. Then you wouldn't have to change much else (though Bobby's additions of the leg change and lowered head would still be great) and the cables can be free floating anywhere because they don't have to support the weight.
It would be a simple and quick addition that fits the robotic theme to boot.
Something like this perhaps (except not silly looking like mine )...
Heh, potentially, maybe. What I was thinking of doing was thickening the cables in the back when I came around to painting over them. Since theres only four of them, theres room for making them look a bit more solid and serious

So, yeah, took me a while to get *anything* done but, at long last, I'm finally in a position to start getting art suff up and running.
So, I'll start with something basic. Outcast Re-design, first page. Colouring was fairly basic and all, pencil sketch gone over with black ink. Coloured in PS CS4.
More to come, although when I have no idea >_>
