Concept for an Ill/Rad or Ill/??
As for TA ... while I have several archers, only one of them is TA. I've not tried mixing TA with non-archery sets yet, though I understand you can get some good synergies going. I think Ill/TA is probably one of the better combos, because with the pets out you don't have to redraw the bow as often, and PA can take the aggro for you and hold them in a spot while you ... uh ... shaft your foes.

And as for a "reason" that an illusionist would use TA? Well, Illusion has no substance. The Trick Arrows are used as a delivery system for the physical substances such as Glue and Acid that make the foes susceptible to the Illusions. Arrows are a more precise delivery system than granades, and yet carry more than a bullet might.

The first step is admitting you have a problem.

My Ill/Rad, Entropic Girl has mutant powers based on entropy; she "brings disorder to the minds and bodies of her enemies". She weakens their minds, causing them to see things that aren't there; she disrupts the structure of their bodies, leaving them more vulnerable to attack.
My Ill/TA Rabbit Trick is a bunnygirl; the result of a Circle of Thorns mage who decided to try his hand at stage magic and did better than he intended. "Watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat!" And yes, I WAS thinking of Bullwinkle.
My Ill/Sonic Sound Effectz is a renegade Freakshow who creates illusions and sonic effects from his implants. His motivation for being a hero? Freakshow don't NEED motivations! Besides, violence is violence, and the heroes have cool stuff he can weld to himself.
For a concept for /Therm - I have an Earth/Therm named Promethean Flame who stole the Fire of Life from the gods and can grant life to the unliving, as well as heal or enhance the already alive.
Arc #40529 : The Furies of the Earth
I once started an Ill/Therm named Dream of Flame as a concept build (though when I put it into Mid's I found that it would be a great build mechanically--EXTREMELY versatile, and it was hitting permahasten with no real purples, 2 LotG, and no major build sacrifices). She was a vengeful fairy whose home realm was destroyed; the Illusion was fey trickery and the fire was pale green to get a "fairy fire" effect. I played up the historical fairy aspect--she wasn't the kind of fairy from a little girl's coloring book, she was the kind of fairy that has people whispering fearfully about the "kind ones."
I deleted her because I wanted to play something more "controlly," but I'm still fond of the concept and power combination.
Incidentally, when talking about purples, please keep in mind that you can (and really should) pick up 5 or 6 of the Confuse purples for Deceive. They have better set bonuses than the rest of the purples, and you can usually get the whole set for under 100 million Inf.
Nice concept there, with the more accurate type of fairy. Can't say I would have thought of that due to the common image of a fairy tale princess' type fairy.

My ill/rad is a malfunctioning android from the future (tech origin). Designed to provide lifelike safari experiences in a controlled environment, he has an array of holographic emitters. Also, he has a malfunctioning nuclear power core (which he's able to keep contained--most of the time) and an infinitely recursive personality subroutine which makes him long to be human, and more specifically to be a hero of Paragon City.
He discovered a means of time travel prior to the unveiling of Ouroboros, but I dunno, for all I know it was an aspect of the Pillar.
And now, here he is, defending Paragon from all the AVs and Giant Monsters.
He also has a "human" alter-ego, a sort of Clark Kent personna (Dr. Ian Lennon) that teaches CGI at PCU.

That's all well and good but, I for one, will not slot a purple even if I get one. |
The Confuse set really makes sense for an Ill/Rad if you are going for perma-PA or otherwise trying to get as much recharge as possible. Not only is it one of the more reasonably priced sets, but the recharge in it has a large benefit. The other set to put in Deceive is the Malaise Illusion set, which has 6.25% Recharge for 5. But Expediant Reinforcement, Positron's Blast and Decimation all have 6.25% Recharge, too, so it is very, very easy to come up against the "Rule of 5" with that amount of Recharge. By using 5 of the Coercive Pursuasion set (including the Contagious Confusion proc) you get 10% Recharge and free up another slot available for a 6.25% Recharge.
In my Illusion Controllers, the Confuse purple is the only purple set I have.

That said, while I do not know the OP's motivation for "Purple Prejudice," I would sooner buy all six recipes of the purple Confuse set than a single Numina unique (which runs about the same price as the full crafted set). The Recovery, Damage, Recharge, and (5%!) Defense are all nice, as is Contagious Confusion. (Conceptually, it's also amusing to see Seeds of Confusion somehow becoming even more awesome.)
I disdain the use of purples, but I also don't think of the Confuse and Sleep sets as "real" purples, due primarily to their prices. I spent more inf on costume changes for my Scrapper than I did on the Confuse set for my Controller.
My issue with Purples is almost (ALMOST) nothing more than a personality quirk. You see, part of the issue is that when I hear something being hyped excessively, and becoming the target of some folks' obsessions, I tend to avoid whatever that is at all costs, it becomes an equal and opposite revulsion (almost) for me. Like a friend of mine realized one day, when he was in his teens, that he had never had gum. Well, everyone is like, oh my god, have a damn stick of gum, and he says no thanks, I have survived this long without it, I certainly don't need any now. And so it is with Purples. But that is only part of it.
The rest of it comes from the fact that of all the activities in the game, slotting is my least favorite. I hate doing it. I spend the least amount of effort possible. To the point where I take the time to slot the fewest times possible. For instance, I slot for the first time on ANY character at level 12, and then keep them up until 22, when I get SOs. Then, at 32, I slot level 35 common IOs, and don't slot anything else on my journey to 50... except for dropping in SOs in the new slots I acquire.
In fact, I almost never even use any set IOs, except for a few of them that have dropped (like an End Mod one, can't recall the name, it was a Proc) and a few -KB ones.
As a tertiary concern, is the fact that I really don't see the need to go above and beyond what I do. I don't play any one character enough to really need or want to get his numbers above what they are with simple IOs and SOs... it isn't worth the drudgery of calculating the numbers and slotting, and marketeering and what not. I play this game to have fun, and that is not fun for me, so I don't do it... and honestly, I have never had a problem where a bit of perseverance hasn't helped... While I'm sure an extra 2% of some stat would fill in the rough spots a bit on various characters, I simply don't care enough, and won't play them enough at 50 to justify it (the only 50s I routinely play are my two badging characters).
Before IO sets, I used to only pull out one of my 50's for high level TFs, like the Statesman. I have only IO'ed up a couple of characters, as I am not into farming. But I have taken my Broadsword/Shield scrapper and planned the build acquired the IOs to softcap his Defense . . . and he has become my favorite scrapper by far.
On the one hand, I understand the preference to focus on leveling characters rather than completed characters. On the other hand, I also understand the feeling of accomplishment when you work for so long to build a good character, then a great build with all the IOs planned just so. You want to enjoy the fruit of your efforts, as see how much better you can make the character. My BS/Shield has no purple sets, but has softcapped defense and does great damage. He is fun to take places and do things that would kill other scrappers.
Similarly, a lot of people want to put together a max Ill/Rad with perma-PA, just so they can do something that few characters can do -- solo AVs. The can also tank for a team quite easily -- not as well as a good tank, but they can do it.
I have several in-game friends who take great delight in tinkering with their builds, improving this attribute or that attribute. In some areas, a small improvement makes a BIG difference -- such as if you have a character with 40% Defense, then an extra 3% cuts the number of times he is hit substantially.
There's plenty of room for individual preferences.

My ill/rad doesn't have any purple sets simply because he was soloing AVs by the late 30s and I wanted +recharge bonuses prior to hitting level 50.
By the time I got to level 50, he'd already achieved perma-PA without using purple sets; he'd soloed nearly every AV and GM he'd run across, and I figured, why re-slot?
Still, if you're planning on getting the very best enhancement values and perma-PA, and you don't mind waiting until level 50 to start giving AVs and GMs the hairy eyeball, illusion controllers can slot an awful lot of purple sets, many of which are inexepensive.
