Well,iv decided on a tanker that ill start out the account with..finally.

Im going with a Elec/Ice Melee Tanker.For seome reason it just looks like it would be a decent combo on paper,and it doesnt hurt the Storm Ninja theme im giving it.

Any opinions on the matter?

Well, my first question, for anyone that's going to choose Ice Melee, is what do you want it for?

Ice Melee is the control secondary for tankers. It's not high on single target damage, but does have decent AoE potential, at least at high levels. However, bosses may give you some trouble, since you'll have little damage to take them down.

Still, I would wager that it would be a fun combo, and I suggest that you try it out!

Since you're new, let me just give you a little personal anecdote. It took me 20 characters before I found the one that I really liked the best (my namesake), so don't be afraid to try a lot of different combos out, and see what you like!

After the rant you started about playing a fire/ tank and having to defend your choice and you're not going with it? Sissy!

I would suggest WP/SS as I'm a huge fan of it so far (just hit 22 last night) but if would not match up your concept at all. Ultimately, I think any combo can work regardless of how it looks "on paper". IMO it's more about whether or not it suits your playstyle.

It can work, but there's a couple of caveats to it. As Aett mentioned Ice Melee is a low damage secondary with a good amount of control, so unless you're willing to allow the rest of the team to actually do the killing while you hold aggro and contribute relatively minor damage then you may want to consider another secondary... Stone Melee comes to mind if you want to keep the "control" aspects of Ice Melee and still have solid damage.

From an armor standpoint Electric is arguably the least durable set in the game, even below Fire in survivability. If you're willing to make considerable investment in defense bonuses and powers it could be quite competent in the end game, but on it's own it's weak, comparable to Fire Armor without the quick recharging Healing Flames. If you're pairing it with Ice Melee or Stone Melee the additional mitigation of the secondary (knockdowns, slows, stuns etc.) will help with this somewhat but you'll still need to be cautious.

I'm not trying to tell you the combo won't work for you, just to make you aware of the shortcomings before you've invested a lot of time into a set you're unhappy with.

My own experience -- which may or may not match your playstyle and preferences -- I took an Elec/Ice up to 35 or so before deleting it. I was hoping that Ice Patch would be a good panic button and keep critters in Lightning Field... but it was slow and I got bored.

It would have been fun to get to the holds, and add in the Immob and Hold from the Ice epic. But still, slow arresting of critters. Just deleted a Shield/Ice at 28 for the same reason.

While i do understand the drawbacks of Ice Melee,i plan on going the most exspensive route possible for IOs..which would be damage % IOs,as for lightning armor,yeh,in many respects its not so great,but so far,even at lower levels,i take the alpha just fine.topple that with the factor that recharge will come into the IO build as well (global recharge),added with Hasten,and Lightning reflexes,i may acctually do alot more damage due to recharge times.

Spamming back to back ice aura's might prove a bit damaging...it has a fast stomp animation,and moderate damage,but if you trigger it every few seconds,as fast as possible,and have damage boosting IOs,i think itll be fine...theres alot to be said about the recharge of a power.....atleast thats how ill deal with the damage issues of a low damage set...pump up its recharge speed to keep up with other sets.

I have one at 50 and it is nice. Shield Charge and AAO really helps with the less than stellar performance of Ice melee. Comparing Shield/ice to fire/ice, the shield is about 30%faster for mission completion. (I ran the same AE mission cycles between the two and logged time/damage etc.)
