Should each archetype focus on the same set bonuses regardless of powerset choices?
I mean every blaster should focus on the same, every scrapper focus on the same set choices? Or like should a ice blaster focus on something different then a fire blaster? Furthermore, what set bonuses should each archetype ideally focus on? Zoner |
There's no firm rule on what "each AT should focus on", it all depends on what bonuses will best complement a character's particular powers and playstyle. An Empath defender has different needs than a Kinetic defender or a Radiation defender; just because they're all the same AT doesn't mean they need the same things.
What character are you playing that you wanted to know about? That's what we'd need to know in order to offer you useful advise. A Broadsword/Regen scrapper has dramatically different needs than a Spine/Invulnerability yet they're both scrappers. A Fire/Radiation controller likewise has much different needs than an Earth/Radiation even though they share the same secondary.

CMA knows his stuff, so take that post to heart.
Essentially, slotting for what your character required most is a good thing to aim for. Perhaps you should tell us your AT/Powersets and we can recommend some slotting ideas for you.

Energy/Energy Blaster Guide
Even with the same powersets there are often different things to aim for depending on how you play.
For example a solo oriented Blaster might focus on Ranged Defense to up his survivability and allow him to take on more enemies at once whereas a more team oriented Blaster might choose to focus on recharge to try and get perma-hasten for more AoE goodness on teams.
There are a number of different build directions to focus on, as others said. In general, most "build directions" head for one or more of these:
- Ranged Defense
- AoE Defense
- Melee Defense
- Smash/Lethal Defense (especially for farmers)
- Endurance Recovery
- Accuracy
- Health Regeneration
- Max HP
- Max Endurance
- Damage Buff
Other components that can be picked up but are more rarely the "direction" of a build include:
- Mez Resist
- Mez Enhancers
- Run/Fly/Jump Speed
- Fire, Energy, Cold, Negative, Toxic or Psionic Defense
- Damage Resistance (I think)
Knockback Protection and Stealth are special cases. A lot of builds will incorporate one or two enhancements to achieve them but there isn't anyway to base a whole build off of it.

This is the build I use on mine. It's not the best one, but it serves me really well whenever I take him. Be it TFs or Missions.
I didn't get to focus on recharge as much as I would like, but you have enough defences where using a small purple would put you on softcap for Ranged defence, and using a mid purple would put you on softcap for Slashing, Lethal, Energy, and Negative Energy Defence. You also have enough recharge to carry on an infinite chain of (Ice Bolt -> Ice Blast -> Ice Bolt -> Bitter Ice Blast -> Repeat), and enough accuracy bonuses to make sure your attacks hit at least most of the time. 8 points of KB protection will guarantee protection against like 90% or so from all Knockback in the game, probably more even. You can Stealth/TP when needed (Like the tree mission in the STF), and have you enough Holds to hold bosses and EBs when you want to. Like I said, it's not the best, but it serves me really good.

EDIT: Made a little change to the build I just noticed. Switched Stealth to Combat Jumping. Would make it a little bit more expensive (having to get the Celerity +Stealth IO and a BotZ: KB protection instead of a Karma one), but overall gives better Endurance/sec consumption and a much better movement ease.

You might also try making a ''best guess" build and posting it for comments. Coming up with a build--especially an IO build--is a fair amount of work and you're likely to get more responses if you give people something to react to rather than have them custom design a build for you.
