Continuing windows crashes and freezes
Doesn't sound like a driver issue to me...
You didn't specify if the keyboard and mouse are connected to the PC by PS2 (Round) connectors or by USB.
If they are USB then it's most likely a power issue.
Possible causes:
Faulty Power Connector/or not plugged in properly.
Overloaded/overheating PSU.
Overheating i5 CPU (Cooling not properly fitted.)
Faulty Motherboard.
And a few other options...
Sorry, I should've said. They're both USB.
Can it be a power issue? I have a 600w Thermaltake LitePower power supply, which I presumed was good enough to cover the needs of powering this system. Have I grossly underestimated?

No. A 600W power supply is bigger than you need. I think Coolio may have meant that it was a problem with the power supply, rather than it not being powerful enough.
It sounds like a hardware problem to me. One possible connection.... you said the keyboard and mouse are USB. What about the headset? Is that also USB?
Paragon City Search And Rescue

No, the headset is normal connections through the front panel. So then...the only way to test to see if it's a power supply issue is to use another power supply? I don't have a spare, unfortunately...but the parts are brand new and under warranty.

I just wanted to give this a bump; I've had the PC in for a week back at the shop where they ran two programs, BurnIn and 3DMark to test the system and only had one issue where they subsequently replaced the video card.
However.
Viewing Youtube streaming videos (only three at once) today caused the exact same issue (mouse and keyboard dropping out, system stall requiring manual reboot). Now, it seems to do no harm to the system, though I should point out there was a blue screen error earlier today that did a forceable reboot of the system (I didn't get to read the full notice, only that something had happened requiring the system to reboot).
There are two factors at work here that might help illuminate things; the first is that it's been very hot here in Australia the last few days (temps around 95 degrees) that could perhaps contribute to a system overheating, and the hard drive itself at just a mere 160 gig capacity is nearly three years old. Actually....I have also installed DivX codecs onto my machine to watch some avi files that I can't watch otherwise.
I've been racking my brains to figure this issue out: Is it the ADSL modem I have? Is it the motherboard? The video card? The hard drive? The codecs? If anyone can steer me straight, I'd deeply appreciate it. The hard drive was wiped and it's on a clean install also.
S.
Update: I've just had a friend who works in IT tell me that he had a system have pretty much the same thing happening...due to overheating. So a heat sink or a simple fan perhaps in tandem with an open case may be the solution. I'd still be interested to hear people's feedback, however. Just to nail down this issue once and for all.

The most likely causes are:
1) System is overheating
2) Power Supply is not powerful enough (either its dying or too small power wise)
3) Both of the above
Considering that it seems to happen when dealing with video items, I would check what the power supply is rated at (250W, 400W and Amps on it) and see what sort of power is recommended for the video card you have. I also would download speedfan to see what the temps are in your case when the system is running.

It's a 600W Thermaltake Litepower power supply, and is brand new. I'm not sure how to check for what wattage would be good for an Nvidia 9600GT would be, though....good to see consensus is forming, however.
S.
Update: The card requires a 450W supply, so I'm over it by a good 150W.
Part of Sister Flame's Clickey-Clack Posse
Also I used an online power calculator before my first post. You have plenty of power. The PSU might be dying, but it's not too small.

So it is possible that if you have multiple high current drawing components connected to one rail you could overload the PSU even if you are nowhere near the max rating - check if there are any splitter cables being used and note what is connected to them.
Another possibility is that as you say you are in the middle of a heat wave this is reducing the rating of the psu or possibly the psu fan is failing or clogged.
I'd certainly suggest looking into your system temperatues first and making sure the fans are rotating and clean. Extra system fans are very cheap if you find that is still a problem - only a few £/$/whatever.
USB also limits the power that can be drawn from a USB port so check if you have other peripherals connected other than via a powered hub.

This jumped out at me:
2) During the above normal operations, the computer will freeze and a harsh buzzing/screeching sound comes across my headphones. A manual restart is required. |
Make sure everything is seated properly, no wires are being pinched or rubbed against by fan blades, and that no circuit board edges are making contact with mobo/expansion board components OR the system chassis. If you've removed the mobo and replaced it, check to make sure you've no loose screws/parts kicking around inside the chassis under the mobo, or next to it. CHECK ALL OF THE FANS and replace any that are questionable.

Just to respond to this; I found out through another friend that the BIOS listed for the motherboard (Gigabyte GA-P55-UDR3) was listed as having some problems which included the error you highlighted and the aforementioned keyboard/mouse disablement.
That's been updated and I'm watching the system cautiously.

Hello again. I posted just a couple of days ago regarding issues I've been having with Windows, and despite updating the motherboard's BIOS, the video card drivers and the audio drivers, I am still having the following problems.
1)During normal operations (including watching YouTube videos, using Windows MovieMaker and playing MMO's) the PC will freeze with an apparent loss of power (both mouse and keyboard clearly lose power lights) and no warning sounds are given. A manual restart needs to take place.
2) During the above normal operations, the computer will freeze and a harsh buzzing/screeching sound comes across my headphones. A manual restart is required.
I fear one of two things; the first being that I have to completely reinstall Windows XP and update -everything-, something I truly dread doing, or secondly that there is something fundamentally wrong with one of the hardware components which I don't have the skill or tools to test for. I would greatly appreciate any help here, and this would include guides to (if it comes to it) saving all my Outlook messages and IE favorites and links. The only good thing about this is that it's near the end of the year and I'm not online as much. Here below are my PC stats.
