DPS is exactly what it sounds like - the amount of damage you can output per second. Obviously a higher number is better, but there are some concessions to be made.

Generally speaking, you don't really have to worry about what your DPS is exactly if you're a casual player. Some people use the term "DPS" interchangably with "damage dealer" to signify a role on a team (i.e. to put out damage, hopefully a lot of damage in a short period of time). If you want to min/max your character for PvP or just for grins, DPS is a common variable people tend to care about and try to maximize.

An attack activates in 1.67 seconds, recharges in 8 seconds, and does 50 damage. To get dps (damage per second), divide the damage by the recharge plus activation (aka cast cycle, or how many seconds the attack takes, total, to become available to use again).

50/(1.67+8)=5.17 dps.

That's the literal meaning of dps.

As Justaris said, most of the time when people refer to DPS they are talking about someone who deals a lot of damage.

"We need DPS. See if you can find a blaster or scrapper"

Also try using Mids Designer for your build and you can let it do the math in the totals to get DPS and see how changes to enhances, etc. effect your output.

You don't need to. The term is commonly used in one of two ways:

1) "Our team needs more DPS."
All they are saying is that they want a character whose primary purpose is doing damage, like a blaster, scrapper, brute, etc.

2) "The DPS of this attack is 8.5."
Pretty much no one cares. This is a useless detail to over 99% of the players. I've been playing 4-1/2 years, have dozens of IO'ed characters, one with a build that cost billions, and I don't care what the DPS numbers are. It pretty much only matters to game developers and people who want to fight archvillains solo.

So, if they are referring to a character as DPS, it just means 'damage dealer'. If they are referring to specific DPS numbers, ignore them or they'll start in with other details like DPE (Damage Per Endurance).

As others have stated before, DPS means the average damage per second you put out over a given amount of time. Easiest way to calculate your DPS is to measure how long it takes for you to run through an attack chain and divide the damage you've done by the time it took.

This will most probably get you a value where the nominator (time) is greater than one second, but just cranking it in a calculator will give you the value of damage you dealt on average per seoncd. As an example, if you dealt 1000 damage over 10 seconds, you'd get 100 DPS.

The term can also be used to refer to damage output in general (which may or may not entail numbers). For example, "We failed to kill Romulus because we didn't do enough DPS to get through his healing."

Even a few too many for a blade.

i wish i knew what part of DPS he still doesn't understand. To me it all seems pretty straightforward, so i keep getting the feeling there's something i'm not seeing. Something that isn't obvious and logical when you finally notice it.
