Recipes Drops
I'll refer you to a recent (this weekend post of mine) on the same issue, but in a different subforum
Going back to the start of my recent tracking (this spans a couple of incremental builds)

I'm not discounting anyone's perception, but you are going to need good strong statistical evidence to convince me that there is an issue when my own data is showing such close to expected results. |
Best way for purples is doing exactly what you are doing, soloing large sized groups. Drops are not as good when teamed, so TFs certainly aren't the optimal route to purples.

4 recipes out of 30 missions is one heck of a run of bad luck when set for 4 players.

To the OP, level doesn't matter as long as the mobs are -2 or higher. So if the only thing you care about is purple recipe drops, set your difficulty to fight -1 mobs. Purples can drop from level 47 and higher mobs, so you'll get them if you're level 50 fighting level 49 mobs. However, about half of the set IO recipes you get will be 49, and those often sell for significantly less than the 50 equivalent. Personally, I'd always fight even level mobs because they're not really that much harder.
But the key to getting lots of recipe drops is defeating lots of mobs. Set your difficulty to get huge spawns and take them down as fast as possible. People usually write this as +0/x8/no/no, meaning level+0 (even con), spawn for a team of 8, no bosses, no AVs. If you can't handle x8, then go down to what you can.
If I misinterpreted your post and you really meant you were fighting +1 mobs spawned for 4, then you probably defeated a whole lot more mobs, and your recipe drop rate really is off. Look around for Archie_Gremlin's package to calculate drop stats. You just turn on chat logging in-game, then feed the logs to Archie's program. That's how Catwhoorg got his data above.
Goodbye and thanks for all the fish.
I've moved on to Diablo 3, TopDoc-1304
I think you may be misinterpreting his post. I think the "1/+4" means spawn mobs for 1 player at +4 level. In that case, depending on whether you stealth or not, defeat all or not, those 4 recipes may be reasonable.

Good advice as always TopDoc in the rest of the post.

Thanks guys.
It seems I was indeed having some very bad luck. But the thing about random rolls is that all streaks, bad or good, must one day come to an end.
Last night the first thing I did was change my setting to spawn mobs for 6 players at normal level (Previously I had set it to spawn for 4 players).
The first mission I tried was more difficult then normal (I died once), but on the seventh mob in the mission the first recipe dropped and, as luck would have it, it was a purple (Armageddon chance of fire damage)
By the end of the mission another six recipes dropped (four generic IOs and two other set ones).
So either the Luck Gods of COH read my post and felt sorry for me, or you guys have the right idea and upping the number of players makes all the difference.
So thanks for your advice and Ill keep doing solo large group sized missions.
Thanks guys.

I normally list difficulties as +LEVELxPLAYERS.
So a mission set for +1 level and 4 players is +1x4.
Glad your drops finally started to come through. I have a scrapper already nearing 30 and am sitting on positively STUPID amounts of inf (spent 5 million tonight and had it made up off SALVAGE DROPS in three missions).
Thanks for the Chart, I have been doing my mishes at -1/7 and the chart seems about right, I thought my luck was off for a minute but after looking at the chart I guess the Drop Rate is WAI. Thanks

Yea. I do mine at -1x8. They fall like rain.
Some questions about recipes and drop rates.
Im one of those players that leaves the game for a few months then comes back for a couple of months, then etc etc
Ive only just come back for a couple of weeks after quite some months away from the game. A lot has happen in that time, so Im not sure if Im just having bad luck or something has changed with the recipes drop rates.
Over the last two weeks Ive been doing mainly solo Radio missions. After the first night back I did some reading and changed my settings to 1/+4. Since then Ive done about 30 missions (including at least 3 safeguards ones) but I have only gotten a grand total of four recipes to drop. Three of which where just normal level 50 IO ones.
Is this just bad luck, or has the drop-rate been changed that much?
And if so, whats the main way to get a reasonable chance of a purple drop these days?
Unfortunately, I play odd hours so the chance of joining groups or TFs is very rare, so I hope doing TFs isnt the only answer.
