Tis the Season

The Thanksgiving (American) and Christmas season is upon us.

If you can, don't forget to drop off a couple of cans of non-perishables at your local food bank, or a gift at a shelter for a child who may otherwise not get one.

As well, don't forget about CHILD'S PLAY CHARITY, by the boys from Penny-Arcade. For those of you not familiar with it, here's a little blurb from their website:

Quote:
Since 2003, over 100,000 gamers worldwide have banded together through Child’s Play, a community based charity grown and nurtured from the game culture and industry. Over 5 million dollars in donations of toys, games, books and cash for sick kids in children’s hospitals across North America and the world have been collected since our inception.
Gamers helping kids in sick hospitals. Awesome!

Christmas is in December... that is when its season should be starting. No other holiday gets to start a full month (or more) before it happens.

Aside from that, carry on with your awesome suggestions!!

Thanksgiving (American) is in 15 days from today. I understand it's a huge holiday in America, and people take it very seriously. As well, with Child's Play, you often get gamers giving entire gaming SYSTEMS, like a PS3, or a PSP. Those may require budgeting to do so, if that's what you want to do - hence, the 'early' notice.

It doesn't take much for a food bank - I always like to give a few non-perishables that the food banks don't often get to see, like pudding cake mixes, or something else that can be considered a treat for the little ones.

I almost forgot, if you don't want to give to food banks (which btw may be easier than you thought if your local grocery store has a donation bin for it!), or Child's Play, animal shelters sometimes get overlooked during Christmas. (This is where Sooner gives me a huge hug and a kiss!) Last year, I donated money to our local no kill shelter instead of buying a present for my grandmother. It's a good way to give a gift for people that don't need anything.

Goodness I'm coming off as preachy here, but it's for a great cause(s)!

Great idea.

I was recently introduced to the concept of animal shelters last week when a cat started taking refuge on our back balcony and we started looking at our options, already having 2 cats (one being diabetic). Winter's coming and our makeshift shelter for him isn't going to be sufficient.

I had no idea such things existed before.

But now that I do, I think I'll take you up on that idea of a donation for them this year (I've even found their Facebook page).

As for the traditional food/clothing/gifts drive, the entire family gets involved in our local church's program on the south shore of Montreal. Last year, the total donations distributed (not counting volunteer time) was 500 000$ CAN. The church was turned into a free retail store for that occasion, with athletes (former Canadiens and mascot, Alouettes, etc.) and other noteables lending a hand.

Nothing can better celebrate the season than giving.

We donate to our local food pantry. There are so many PEOPLE out of work and honestly, going hungry... these days. We feel like it is the place to donate. I, personally, promote local food banks and charities, so you are truly giving to your community.

Child's Play is an awesome group as well.

Ooo... >.> o.O <.< ... I also suggest a local organization for donating Christmas gifts for children, or adopting families. RUN AWAY RUN AWAY from the Salvation Army!

In jr and high school up here, every Christmas we adopted a family in need, and got a list of things like how many people in the family, sizes, what they needed, and a larger (though not huge) toy for the little ones. You should have seen the stuff we got for them, holy smokes.

Don't forget, you can help out any way you can - if you want to help out but money's tight, you can always volunteer your time (even though it'd take you away from here!!!).

I'll have some charity information to post about in a couple more days. I've always thought that we have a great and giving community.
