Need advice on my next scrapper.

Hello fellow scrappers.

I am having trouble on deciding on my next scrapper.

I have my eyes set on Shield Defense as I have not played this set before.

However the problem is deciding on the primary. I'm looking for good AoE, great single target damage, mostly soloing AV's and just having fun with a Pylon.

The 3 primaries I have thought about are Fire, DM, and Elec.

I'm also looking for end game performance. Influence is not an issue, as I have well into multi billions saved up from my hero toons. So soft-capping and making a top performing build is in the plans. This scrapper will be taking over my namesake.

Any advice and insight are greatly appreciated.

Good AoE : DM is out.
Great ST : ElM is out.

That leaves you with Fire Melee.

If you want a great ST damage AV soloing then I hear good things about DM.
If you're looking for something that could just rip through mobs after mobs, you'd probably gonna want Ele

Now if you want a set that could do both and do it well... then I'd point you to a Fire...

whats more Roman?

I know broadsword wasnt listed but its ST and AoE damage.

Otherwise id say fire as well.

I wouldn't say DM/shield has weak AoE.... soul-drain + shield charge does drop an entire spawn very consistantly (every 30 seconds is very achievable). But if elec/shield (with shield charge and lightning rod) is the new benchmark of "good AoE", then everything else has weak AoE.

Elec/ does have very poor ST damage relative to other scrapper sets. No way around that.

I gotta make pain. I gotta make things right. I gotta stop what's comin'. 'Least I gotta try.

I'd rank Spines, Claws, FM, ElM, BS, Katana and DB all above DM/Shield for AoE, it has nothing to do with Elm/SD really (which I'd rank below FM/SD by the way).

SD (and LR ; same power and all) is great burst damage, however on damage over time by itself it doesn't compare well to standard AoEs/cones, even considering the extra radius. SM is painful to use compared to other similar cones - and I'm not buying the "I can get 5 guys reliably with each SM without wasting even a second" argument.

I wouldn't say DM/SD has weak AoE either, but for me it's definitely below average, and I can't qualify it as "good" in a comparison topic.

Fire/SD does the best single target and aoe damage out of the three but dark adds a self heal that goes so much further to help survivability more so then any amount of extra dps can provide. Not to mention that with it's to hit debuff it adds a small secondary layer of damage mitigation.

They nerfed the way SM was working after the range increase - before the 'fix', it was a great aoe power and you could very easily get 5 (maybe not in one second, but pretty damn quickly) once you knew how to use it. Now, it's pretty mediocre, and DM is back to primarily single target, and I'd agree with your aoe rankings.

Of those three, Fire's probably your best bet. But allow me to toss out Broad Sword for your consideration. Nice single targets and a couple area attacks, plus the combination of sword and shield is a classic one. I am enjoying mine.

I'm looking at Fire as well. My pools would probably be Fitness, Speed, Fighting and Medicine.

If anyone has a Fire/Shield build out there, please do share.
