Hi all!

This is for my girl VexXxa. This as you may remember was for another thread, but it's been a while coming...so I thought it deserved its own thread after all. Hope you like it!

Here is my teaser to VexXxa's final colored image.

Would like to get feedback on this from the community here too!

For your feedback, the very first thing I notice is that there's an awful lot of wasted space. All the arts are crowded right into a small space in the center (and dead center also makes for a static composition). You're giving her name top billing rather than the character.

Posted this in another thread but great piece of art Johnny! Well done! Grats on the new art Vexxa!

I got nothing to say about the lines but there is a few things I will point out about the coloring when I have the time, I will write you out a critique on Da

Thanks for the comments and feedback. Looking forward to your color critique Swanny!

Just a quick reply to Wassy - your exactly right about all the art being centralized and a lot of dead space towards the edges. I admit I tend to do a lot of symmetric and centralized compositions. Wearing both a graphic design and illustrator hat I guess pushes me in that direction at times as I apparently subconsciously consider copy/text arrangement around the composition. This can also lead to some dead space around the edges, but quite honestly it is good practice to allow for some empty spacing along the edges for a variety of reasons. The mentioned type consideration, but more importantly you typically want to be able to lead the viewer's eye to a specific point in an artwork and if you apply the same amount of treatment/detail to all of the work, then it may cause conflict with the viewers. An example of this lends itself back to classic oil painting or current classics like Frank Frazetta who tend to diminish the detail of the artwork as it moves outward towards the edges - they allow the "eye" to fill in those spaces. But I digress...thanks again for pointing out the overly centralized composition - even though there was intention for this, I need to keep this in mind for future works.

Oh, and before I forget...VexXxa's name did get top billing as I was treating this somewhat like a comic book cover/poster piece. VexXxa got the virgin one with no title as well.

I have no idea what VexXxa would do with a virgin... But I'd lie to find out.

Ya, I get what you mean with fading the edges, which has all the merits you mentioned. To me, the areas of detail could have been pushed out just a bit further for the overall size of the piece. There's a LOT of black space for the size.

And I'm more aware than I want to be about typesetting considerations. I'm taking a Digital Typography course this semester. All I can say is.... printing/font geeks are strange o.O

Agreed, and I swear they used to be worse a few years back when the web wasn't so prevalent and print was king. There were tons of free fonts creation programs that people were going nuts with lol.

So I have been working in Flash and wanted to demonstrate how I go about colorizing my pencils. Not an actual tutorial or exact recording of how I actually color, but I thought some of you may like to see the "stages".

HERE is the link to the Flash file on my DA page.
