nVidia display crash

It happens at least once a day. I will be playing City and boom, all of a sudden my display will freeze and look as if my graphics are being filtered through the brain of a 60's acid freak.

It happens in both XP and Vista, the only thing I can think of is that its a conflict between city of and the drivers of my GTX280, although I have 2 friends with the exact same card who are not experiencing the problem.

I would be concerned that the card itself was somehow damaged if this happened on any game other that city of, but so far this is a completely isolated issue with my rig and this game.

I have the problem on both the nVidia driver installed via Windows Update, and the latest driver from nVidia's website.

Oh, oh-kay.

I didn't even see your original response, but thank you anyway!

So... everyone else is about as clueless as me?

Its odd, it hasnt done it in 2 days and then BAM, all of a sudden it starts again.

Also to note, I did try all the steps in the "Guide: Vista/Win7/Server08 Crash" sticky before posting.

The whole 60's acid trip makes believe the card itself is going and or has an issue. Manufacturing defect maybe? Coupled with the fact that it's happening in 2 different operating systems...

I hate to say it, but it might be the card. :/

Do you know what temp the card is running at?

We'll see....

Is there any pattern to the times of day it crashes? What was different about those two days it didn't crash? It might be a background event trying to run that sets it off.

So, completely isolate to CoH? No crashes when viewing movies online?

After a crash, can you get into the Event Viewer (not sure if its called that on Vista)? You seem quite competant at gathering important data, but just in case you've not done it before on WinXP, right-click on "My Computer", select Manage, Event Viewer, and System.

Assuming you know the time of the crash, you may be able to find and open an error message related to the crash.

Back when I was playing WoW this summer, my Nvidia kept locking up the game, or so I thought. When I finally got round to checking the Event Viewer, I discovered it was actually my antivirus incorrectly demanding an update while I had it set to "game mode". The result apparently had an affect on the video card, which was already working hard with WoW, creating the lockup. So its possible something seemingly not associated is creating the issue.

The card Idles at 45c and will cap out at 72c on full load, which while warm, is well within operating norms for the card.

If that was the case and the card were dying, I would have the same problem in other games. CoX is the least intensive game I run and I have not noticed a problem in Assassins Creed, Borderlands, Wolfenstein or Empire Total War, nor does it have the issue when running the CUDA Enabled Folding@Home Client or benchmarking with 3DMark.

My card should still be under warranty so I could RMA it if there is an issue, but I most certainly want to ensure that GPU is the problem and this is not a software/driver issue before going through the trouble of doing so.

I have noticed no discernible pattern. It will happen once, seemingly randomly, I will restart and it will be fine for the next day or two until it happens again.

I strip down my startup to nothing but RivaTuner & RealTekHD, and the only program I have that autoupdates is windows 7 itself, I could disable that and see if it makes a difference.

Thank you for the suggestion.

Last update to the bios was 2009/09/16, version F6. I don't know if that maps to your 6.00PG but just in case you didn't see it.

If you haven't got it it can be downloaded here.

No idea whether it would fix your issues but it does seem like a reasonable place to start if you've been experiencing the same problem across different OSes.

I have actually had problems with updating the Bios on win7, for some reason F6 simply hasn't wanted to take, and when I attempt to automatically update with @Bios it will give me either F5 or F4V.

Updating manually seems to have done the trick and the update has taken root this time.

I haven't had a display crash in almost a week now, I doubt its fixed, simply that it is not being triggered but at this point I am curious to discover whats causing it, from an academic standpoint if nothing else.

I got a ton of display crashes on my 9600 GT. When I switched to a 9800, they disappeared.

Been on the 9800 since July, and not one crash since.

Actually, I bought a 9800gt last month and it was having troubles in COH, and not in Batman Arkham Asylum or Wolfenstein. I returned the card, and I'm waiting for a replacement now; the store owner told me he had another 9800gt returned with the same symptoms, but in World of Warcraft, everything else would work fine.

Alright... so it has now started to happen in other games. The problem is getting worse. I think I am just going to RMA the card.

Thank goodness for EVGA's lifetime warranty.

Edit: or not... trying one last thing, just checked te eVGA forums and this seems to be a known issue with the 191. series of drivers. Back to 190 or 186 it seems. Will try the "new" drivers out and report back.
