Best Bonus Sets for ELA

Call Me Awesome

When it comes to mitigation, I've always found pure resist to be bit. . . lacking. Even if there's a heal thrown in for good measure. I don't want to get into a def vs. res argument, let's just call it my opinion.

That said, I was wondering if anybody has any luck with bonuses on their ELA. I'm caught between giving moderate defense to all (20-30%), or going with lots of +HP. Whenever I get an FF defender on the team, I notice a huge leap in mitigation, and that's about the same defense as what I'm shooting for. But I wasn't sure if a lot of HP would end up doing the same or not.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Elec Armor would probably do best with +def. Elec just doesn't get enough regen to make +HP valid, nor does it have any inherent HP boosting powers to compliment what you'd pick up with set bonuses. Unless you can somehow get +HP into the 2700+ range of total HP, I think the +def (which is much easier to get than that much HP) would serve you better.

Just my opinion, feel free to disregard...

Definitely +def over +HP in my book. I'd probably focus on typed S/L def for an elec and punch that to 45%... that should get you the best bang for the buck in defense since S/L will protect you from something like 80% of all incoming damage due to most attacks having a S/L component. After you've soft capped S/L I'd start thinking about E/N... I wouldn't worry about F/C or Psi.

<edit>
Hmm, thinking it over I'm starting to wonder about the E/N def since you're at the 90% cap for energy resistance... you may do better soft capping S/L and then focusing on F/C or simply stopping at the S/L and then worry about other bonuses.
</edit>

S/L typed def is a better choice than any single positional defense and it allows you to focus your defense instead of spreading it over all three positions. Best of all is, of course, to soft cap all three positions but that would be extremely difficult starting with zero defense in your primary.

Remember, def gets more valuable the closer you get to the soft cap... that last 5% from 40-45 protects you as well as the entire first 40%.

Okay, I've decided to hurdle the fence a little. Taking advice for S/L defense into consideration, I've put more effort into that and also managed to hit 20% HP bonus. Defense will look like this: 34% S/L, 22% F/C and 26% E/N. I've taken Tough/Weave, so even though S/L def isn't capped, it's certainly going to mean a lot of mitigation for S/L/E, which is a big part of the game. Put that with 2253 on health, and it should be pretty durable. Here's the build:

[edit] I know most will say 20% defense is laughable, but in my experience with ELA (up to lvl 32), popping one purple seems to carry a lot of weight. Hence the effort on E/N/F/C def to that point.

defense is fine and all but i wanted to make sure i had all my bases covered when i made my elec/stone tank

so to me the "best" bonus's to start were the pvp recipes gladiator strikes. they added to my s/l resistance and not only can i capp resistance with them and the 3% resist i.o unique but i still had room to defense him out. ( and yes i know the current value to them and yes i know not everyone has the money to buy them so please dont respond with the same " everyone is broke" speech.you can have as much money on this game as you want if you work for it.rome and high end builds arent built in a day.stop crying already )

i was more then happy with my tank at 88.15 % s/l resistance ( with tough)so i then went the route of melee defense since thats where i am 99% of the time using touch of deaths ,gussians and oblierations

so i was still able to grab another 33.05% defense on him. then i grabbed phyiscal perfection as well on top of both of that and hes fantastic.

i guess i just wanted to cover everything as much as i could. and by my numbers i think i did.

the question now is what direction you want to go with your tank and head from there.its what i did and its great to see it when its done.

Yeeeeeah. Granted, we can all farm/play the market/buy inf if we choose to, but some of us have more to do with ourselves and would prefer to get some gameplay in too. I don't see much of a need for Phys Perf, on a ELA. Endurance isn't an issue by any means.

I just want to bring in enough mitigation that a 1 min recharge on my heal will be plenty to make up for anything that gets through. Res bonuses are laughable, so some defense with good HP bonuses seems like it should be enough to get the job done.

Now, high Melee defense is always nice. That in and of itself should provide a lot more mitigation than res bonuses ever could.

What about focusing on melee defense rather than S/L? As a tanker, you're going to be in the thick of it 99% of the time anyway. With the use of some of the damage sets, along with weave/combat jumping and the steadfast unique, you should be able to get up to 34% melee defense and the mid 20s on ranged/aoe. This shouldn't cost you too terriblie much either. Definitely cheaper going for the PvP sets.

Edit: The damage sets I was refering to were touch of death, obliteration, multistrike

Edit 2: I just realized you said high melee defense was nice in the last sentance of the post haha.

Sorry, Coldmed, you misunderstood. When I said some of us have more to do with ourselves, I meant in real life. I can see where this wouldn't have occured to you.

A friend of mine asked me to come up with a super survivable (Tank Multiple GM's/AV's without breaking a sweat) Elec/SS tank.

Sooooo I did! Here is what I came up with.

41% Smashing/Lethal Defense
42% Melee defense

That right there should cover most if not all threats.

21% Ranged Defense
~20% AoE Defense
(One small purple will get you out of a lot of trouble if for some reason this doesn't cover it)

In addition +18% HP (for a total of just under 2600 with accolades) 555% Regen when Energize is up (51 HP per sec Regen)

It gives up global recharge (only 25% from IO's and another 20% from Lightning Reflexes for a modest 45% global) But Energize is still on a 38 second timer with hasten. (8 Sec Downtime)

Obviously this isn't an offensive tank. I'm in the "no taunt" group as between foot stomp, gauntlet and a Damage aura, I've never had any real problems keeping aggro, but if you like it go for it.

You're taking the same approach that I did with my Fire/Fire, and for build purposes, I don't think Fiery Aura and Elec Armor are all that different.

I chose to go for about 20-25% defense to Melee, AOE, Ranged, and Psychic damage on my Fire/Fire, and it makes him quite sturdy (with Tough as well, when it's needed)... I've tanked for pretty much everything in game. I would think it would help you out just as well.

I did go for about 20% resists to psychic damage and as much +recharge and +hp as I could get, too. 20% is a decent amount for resists or defense... I know my Fire/Fire is much tougher all around after his IO build than he was during SOs, so it does make a good bit of difference.

I would think you could go for a good amount of defense and get some good recharge and +hp, as they're all going to help you... you have Energize that you want up sooner so you can have a heal and +regen more often.

It is worth noting that you do have some decent resists to psychic, as well as capped resists to Energy. So it might be better to go for S/L defense, +recharge, and +HP when you can. Kind of up to you: just get a good chunk for whatever defense you go for.

The Build is expensive I can not deny that. However as already posted, time and cash are an issue. Well there are 2 ways to go about this. Run Ouro Arcs, run a different TF nightly, most can be done in 2 hours 3 tops. Generating 35 to 40 merits a night in casual play. Save them up and roll them. At some draws I have made 300 mill on 200 merits. other times only 150 mill but the point is you can make the money even casually.

I think the "I can't have it now its not worth my time attitude" is a major issue. No offense but if something is important you work at it. You build it 1 IO at a time. Let me tell you all a story.

I have a friend that has a Grav/Kin Troller. He wanted an IO build. I made him 2, the first being a startup build. The second being a purpled out monster build. This guy plays a few hours a week. He built the Starter Build and slowly but surely worked into the Purple Build. Mind you this guy did not have alot of inf saved up maybe 100 mill to start but he would team, ouro, tf's and so on. Its been about 9 months since I gave him that build, he is about 95% done with it. Just few purps away from completion. My point is, you can have what you want you just need to allocate yourself to work on it. 1 billion influence builds are within reach it just takes time and effort and you never have to spend the billion.

Just because a recipe sells for 100 mill doesn't mean you pay 100 mill for it. Bid 65 mill and wait a few days. This is how you take those 1 bill builds and get away with 650 mill or so. Patience, being savvy and playing off others impatience works wonders.

In the end, the only limitation placed on anyone in this game with respect to builds is what you limit yourself to.

SM/SS are nearly the same power set just a couple trade offs between the two.
