Help: Defense

Hello gang. I looked around the internet and tried to find a detailed Defense guide. I want to softcap my characters defense. I also don't know all the percentages that I should be focused on. Please help me better understand the defense system and how to optimize my survivability.

I've not read it all, but Dechs' guide has received a lot of good feedback.

Thanks for the info guys. Now I can see about making my toons ultra survivable

I also have another question. It may be in the readings suggested above, but I didn't see it. Is there a guide to scrapper secondary powerset numbers? I don't know if different set have different defense percentage numbers. I want to be able to put the knowledge about defense and numbers together. One of the guides above uses super reflexes as an example which is purely defense and not resistance so it's easier to calculate a characters defense numbers I guess as opposed to lets say an invuln secondary which is some resistance as well or a regen with is bonkers with just regen. You get what I'm asking?

Here is a great network of resources for this sort of information.

The part you specifically are looking for is under Red Tomax's City of Data Powerset Quantification here. Just click the button for the archetype you're currently interested in and you should be able to find what you want.

It is slightly aging but still a good resource. I do not know if it is going to be updated.

Hey thanks again for the info. I have a question. Probably a newb sounding dumb one. In the power quantification list for defense is the Acc considered it's default value? I ask so when I do use the hero planner I can see at what point I have reached the softcap. Is it generally safe to say that no one scrapper toon reaches the defense softcap without set bonuses? I'm still a little confused as to what my base numbers for defense sets are. Damn I must sound really n00b but I'm really trying to get a firm grasp of the system. This to me is the most important aspect of the game.

You're at the soft cap once your defense is at 45%. At least SR scrappers can achieve this without set bonuses if they're using Elude.

Alright, so here is my even more n00b-ier question of the day:

How do I know when I reached the softcap? I know when i hover over each of the enhancements that I have set in place there is a percentage value, but of course that not the percentage of total defense. It's just a specific percentage increase. Does each defense power give you base 5 percent defense or something? The base percentage numbers are what I am missing. so if I have 5 powers that have 5 percent base (just an example) then if I get all the DEFENSE powers in a set and don't even trick them out with enhancements then I'd have a total of 25 percent defense right? I'd basically have to get the pen and paper out and calculate it since CoX doesn't have a character stat window. Or does it?

I hope I'm not pissing you guys off and setting myself up for a flamage. I just gotta ask and be sure. I'm positive that there are other people out there wanting to know the same thing, but may be just to afraid to ask. LOL!

I think this might be what I was looking for. Not sure of the numbers hold true still:

When you go to the calculator of you powersets then it gives you the base value of each. Which is what I was looking for. Do you know if these values are still accurate?

Without it in front of me I believe you click Powers and then Combat Attributes. There is a section in there where you can see your defense, and sections for a variety of other things as well.

And if you click on them in the list, you can 'monitor' them, which means permanently place the value on your GUI to see what its current value is as situations change.

Thanks for all the info again. Now I have a clear picture of the whole defense scheme of things. I also now know that my /SR scrapper at this current point in time (LVL 50) has room for improvements.

Also, when I view the power details, this does not include the set bonuses correct? I could be wrong.

I think that's correct. The easiest way to see how much defense you have is to use your combat monitor. In game, click on Powers above your attack tray. You should then see Combat Monitor. From there open up Defense.

Now you'll see all the defense types listed and how much you have in each. As an SR, you'll want to concern yourself with Melee, Range and AoE.

To get a good idea on how to tweak your build, there's now an I-16 ready Mids' Hero Designer that you can get from cohplanner.com

Okay - IF I'm reading this correctly, then the answer is "no." That is to say, if you right click a power (in game) in your tray, select "Info" and then the "Detailed Info" tab, that will give you the enhanced value, with the base value in parentheses, but doesn't give you the enhanced value WITH the set bonuses.

After you do as Bill said above*, under "Melee" you'll see something LIKE:

Melee Defense................................18.96%

.....Weave.......................................+ 5.96% from self
.....Huge Increased Melee/Smas........+7.50% from self
.....Steadfast Protection Res/De........+3.00% from self
.....Moderate Increased Melee/S........+2.50% from self
.....Base Defense..............................0.00%

...and so on. My numbers are crappy 'cause that's from my WP scrapper. The point it, THAT WILL list your set bonuses in-game. Unfortunately, it's up to you to figure out "which one's my 'huge increase?' I think that's from THIS set. Is it?"

Hope that serves to clarify and not confuse things any further!

*From everything I've read around here, doing as Bill says is almost always a good idea, or at the least it's never a bad one.

Once again thanks alot guys. This is alot of good info. Before I really didn't know where i stood defensively. Now I have a clear picture. Now I can clearly see what set bonuses are more geared towards what I am trying to do.
