An idea on how Boomtown could actually be used

Okay was talking to some friends and came up with an idea for Boomtown while flying around finding badges. City of Heroes has to many unused zones and no content lately, so figured, why not fix something in these zones to make for something fun and exciting? This is what I came up for Boomtown.

Basically make a huge GM here. One that's like 10-30 stories high. He rampages through the zone destroying buildings as he goes. Thing is if a group or groups of people beat him he stays down for 4-8 hours. Inside of that time special missions open up. Doing these missions rebuild the city with there completion. As you build up the city you could unlock things like badges, costume options, power ups, or temp powers even.

4-8 hours later he comes back and starts destroying all you built up. If you can stop him before he destroys to much though you can build even larger buildings or more complex ones granting better bonuses and that for doing it. Just an idea for this one zone though. Thought I'd see if anyone wanted to chip in about it.

Right now huge GMs like the one you described are (mostly) beyond the current capabilities of the game. The largest entity in the game (not counting Rularuu, since he doesn't actually ever appear) is the Jade Spider, which can be difficult to fight because of how targeting works.

I seem to vaguely recall seeing a dev post saying that they wanted to rework how targeting worked so they could do larger entities, but obviously nothing has come of that so far.

But I agree, it would be awesome to see an enormous GM. It would also be nice for Boomtown to get a revamp, as Faultline did (and to a lesser extent, the Hollows). Right not you get sent there maybe twice during regular gameplay. Like Old Faultline, it's not even a very enjoyable place to be -- everything looks the same, there's no distinguishing features. It has a GM already in the form of Babbage, but that's really it.

"You don't lose levels. You don't have equipment to wear out, repair, or lose, or that anyone can steal from you. About the only thing lighter than debt they could do is have an NPC walk by, point and laugh before you can go to the hospital or base." -Memphis_Bill
We will honor the past, and fight to the last, it will be a good way to die...

And the problem with targeting and hitting the Jade Spider is largely why Rularuu doesn't show up in the game.

I seem to recall Castle playing around with giant mekmen being available in the AE on Test, trying to get targeting working better. I dunno if anything came out of that, though.

Just as a side note, there already *is* a GM in Boomtown - Babbage. Shows up somewhere along the north side of the zone, one of four or five potential spawn points.

What have we learned from this thread?
1: This idea isn't technically possible, yet.
2: There's already a GM in Boomtown, that most people fight in Skyway >.>

What hasn't been said?
This idea is TOTALLY frelling awesome, and the devs should definitely take it in to consideration once they have solved the targetting issues!

And not just for the initial targeting reason posted. There are a number of technical issues with having temporally changing scenery that can be interacted with. It's possible to change the textures that cover the various pieces of geometry, but changing the actual geometry of the zone based on time and other variables (such as the GM actually attacking them) isn't possible with the current tech.

This, I think, is the bigger issue. It seems perfectly fine and dandy for a Giant AV to be spawned but having that GM wreak havoc through the zone, destroying buildings and then having those same building rebuild over a period of time isn't currently possible, (as far as we know). They might actually have something like this set up for GR (considering all of the people they have working on it, I wouldn't be surprised in the least if they had managed to change the game engine that much), but we won't know until then. As of now, it's a highly problematic pipe dream and not just for the targeting reason (which many melee toons complain of even for targets aside from the Jade Spider, such as the Mitos).

That's interesting.
I wonder if they could attach multiple creatures together, each with thier own targeting box and have it animate in a way that makes it look like a single creature with multiple targeting boxes?
Without it's movement looking absolutely rediculous, at least.

Because if they could, then perhaps they could have a larger Giant Monster and still have it defeatable by ground-pounders.

Now that thier larger-than-original team has (mostly?) finished with Power Customization, perhaps this is more doable than it was in the past.
