Uh, where'd everyone go?

Hello, I've just returned to the game and to Freedom. I left in January and back then Freedom was always yellow-red population, it seems to have been low population all day today and not many people were hanging around in Atlas. Was this just an off night? Are people just waiting for I16? Did people jump ship to CO?

We're more or less here. Lost some bodies for recent game releases (CO, from where I expect we'll get them back in a month or so, and Aion). We average in the yellow usually (reds haven't happened here for a while due to it going immediately gray for pop lockouts). It's been a bit green lately, but during primetime it'll dip into yellow as well.

It's the beginning of the school year; new games are out; people are allowed to try new stuff. If they jumped ship to CO, I'll guarantee they'll be back before Xmas. That game's a tragedy with cel shading. Aion, I expect people will be spending half-time between the two games (like I am), andi t's a good game to do it with.

If you're not seeing a lot of people in Atlas, then you must be drunk and going to Striga or something. AP's been busy most of the day, including right now.

A few things are in play here:

The population limit is believed to have been increased for Freedom and Virtue, and even on weekends it tends to only go to Yellow.

Most people who *are* in game are hanging around a Mission Architect building.. unfortunately....

CO did recently launch, and a few people are trying out the "new shiny".

However, Issue 16 of City of Heroes will launch probably within the next week, at which point you will most likely see tons of people in the tailor shops redoing the color of their powers, or trying to get the Master of Badges for the ITF and the new Dr Kahn and Barracuda TF's. Becaues of the new power customization, expect to see a lot more people standing around being useless in Atlas Park again

PS: If you are looking for people who like to play, check out the list of channels at the top of the Freedom threads. That lists is filled full of great places to meet people who still love this game.

This makes my third end-of-summer on this game and I can tell you that it always seems to slow down because of back-to-school. Once people get ensconced in their classes and so on it'll pick back up a bit more, but it's never as busy as it is during the summer.

I don't know if I am ready for the color 'splosion' coming out in I16. I mean, I love the idea. For ME. As teams form I think I may be a little less enthused with contrasting/conflicting color holds and such. I dunno, I'm torn...

As for the server status. I haven't really noticed.

Just FYI Turg, you can disable the cell-shading and the game looks pretty much like CoX.... Still doesn't play like it, though.

Looks like CoX, plays like a tragedy.

(I guess I should explain my earlier comment. I wasn't saying "with cel shading, the game looks like a tragedy". I meant "this game is a tragedy that's been cel shaded to hide how bad it is, like painting foundation over a 3000 yr old mummy with eczema and a hairlip and expect it to be muy muy kissable".)

Gotcha. And yes, it was a decent game in Beta, but the Release Day patch changed the game for the worse....

EvE: Beautiful, beautiful game, but horridly boring except for the 2% you're actually PVPing. IRON was big into this for years (still is, both as corporation and as privateers). For my money, check out Jumpgate: Evolution. Same idea, but that you're in a one-man fighter instead of an RTS-style frigate command. The old Descentaholic in me craves it.

Aion is in open beta until Sunday so there may be a few people there. Aion has been filled just about everyday however I'm not sure how many are from COH. What I will say is that Aion is beautiful. Play style, animations, and PVE are all great. First two days were lag hell untill they fixed it.

I will continue to play COH however not to the same extent as I will spend most of my time in Aion when it goes live. I plan to keep doing the TF's that Luna and others plan. AE somewhat killed the game however that may change with I16.

Yeah, I certainly have my problems with EvE. We'll see how long it sticks this time.

I would love to play JG:E, but alas, not beta for me yet.
