Nicknames
Sounds good.
I'd have it as something you could assign in the character creator, and updated every once in a while, about as frequently as titles.
Yeah, it would be nice. However, people may use copyright/offensive things in their nicknames. Apart from player's name and costumes, the nicknames would need to be monitored as well.
I've been asking for something like this for years. I like giving my characters names which look cool in print and sound impressive in descriptions. Inevitably, they end up being quite clunky to actually say in conversation, leading to "Good night, John Spartan. Be well." moments. I've always wanted to give my characters nicknames which would appear in character dialogue and NPC comments. Just something that sounds a bit easier on the ears than a full, complicated name.
Samuel_Tow is the only poster that makes me want to punch him in the head more often when I'm agreeing with him than when I'm disagreeing with him.

Is it too hard just to say Imoba?
Apparently yes

But there are two things working in the favor of nicknames that would probably make them safe and doable:
1) They'd have to be able to pass the name filter just like regular names.
2) The Devs could make it so that a player only ever sees their own characters' nicknames, not anyone else's.
With these two safeguards in place no one could ever use a nickname to grief or be "naughty" to other players.

In defense of the current system, every time I see a civilian say something like "Thank you for rescuing me, Captain Antidisestablishmentarianism!" it reminds me of the superheroes game from Whose Line Is It Anyway?
Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.
Here's an idea: You assign your character a nickname which the NPCs will occasionally call you from time to time.
Batman is The Dark Knight, Spider-Man gets called Spidey, why not have the same thing? It could be randomly used, depending on each NPC, of course.
Basically, this idea came to me when I was playing one of my characters called Captain Champion. All the NPCs using the full name every time got old fast and I thought "Why can't they just call him Captain? Or Cap? Or Champ?"
Not a major issue, but I wondered what you all thought.
