I16, Renaming Sidekicking
(inhaler puff)
Look, the Sidekick System has an ostensible position in the game as a way to allow you very literally, a (narrative) sidekick. We know this. It's something that has come to fall out of meaning as it forces a kind of narrative on the players, and let's face it, nobody says 'Okay, you make Captain America, and I'll make Bucky and I'll somehow deliberately stay far enough behind you that you can sidekick me all the time.' By 'nobody' I mean 'a vanishingly small percentage of players,' of course. NOW, that said, the new system doesn't 'sidekick' anyone. It doesn't require proximity, it doesn't have that persistant thematic. Rather than behaving as a mentor and a sidekick, though, it's bringing disparate heroes (and villains) of different straits, and different capacities, together. Those who are far beyond the level of the threat are brought down a bit and are holding back, those who are far below the level of the threat are going to still struggle somewhat to represent the difference in what they're handling. In essence, this is no longer Sidekicking. I therefore propose this system to be named as per what it evokes to me: Crossovering. (inhaler puff) |
As for "Crossovering" as a name, I am not sure. That sounds more like a cross-server or cross-side feature IMHO. Perhaps, "Universal Teaming".

I never really looked at sidekicking as a permanent set up unless you are role playing a Capt. America/Bucky. But more like Batman and Robin, who later grows into his own as Nightwing. Here the sidekick does progress. As far as the new super sidekicking I'm viewing it more like I do with say the Avengers. You have the big guns Thor/Ironman but you also have the Wasp. When the Wasp is out on her own its laughable, but when she shows up with Thor/Ironman then its the AVENGERS!
But renaming sk/lk doesn't really need to be done. Its going to be your solo or your a team(-up). Since everyone will be the same or -1 level as the leader.
Personally I see little pairs or small groups all the time running around. Don't really know if they are mentor/pupil or an equal pairing but they are out there.
Got to agree that "Crossover" would be more like if the Champions Online Heroes popped up over here for an event. Just as DC/Marvel/Image have done crossovers in thier books.
I'm not sure the new system is going to officially be called anything. It's just going to happen. I got the impression that "Super Sidekicking" was sort of a nick name they were just using to put a label on it at the moment. Not sure on that though, of course.

I'm pretty sure s/he meant "crossover" as in when in comic books the heroes/villains of different comics who may or may not have vastly different common foes and power levels have a standard crossover run of one or more issues and for that duration their powers are seemingly on par with each other. For instance, when superman and batman team up, batman can still be of use even though their power levels are vastly different the rest of the time.

Crossovering is a bit of a mouthful. I like Garielle's Universal Teaming better.
