Def vs. Res

Which is better for pvp? i remember reading that in PvP def was useless due to a player being able to pop a couple of insperations and build up/aim. If you have a choice between def or resistance what would it be?

Defense is in a pretty terrible state right now. It was good when Elusivity meant something between I13 and I14, but resistance is simply the best way to go.

Depends on what I'm fighting. I hate getting my end drained and I wish my Fire/SS Tank was defense based sometimes when fighting elec/therms or wishing the heals missed more against /dark MMs.

Def was good with elusivity, just too good. But instead of balance they nerfed it into the ground.

I think a mix of both is new ware its at. Theres alot of Fire/ss fan boys out there, and with good reason. How ever Inval offers just as much if not more resist and enough def to make a person miss. Its only issue is stamina mitigation

Slot for Defence if its a Defence based toon, otherwise I wouldn't bother getting what you can from sets and that.

I was mostly wondering because Im going to level a character to strictly do pvp and I didnt want to spend so much time on a character who's main for of defence was countered by just popping a yellow or one button, which it was made to sound like a defence based character was. Also if the happy 'medium' is a set based on both def and res why do people say to steer away from /WP? it's both def and res isnt it? again I will be using it to face other players =)

PS: Smeghead love the picture of the Red Dwarf crew there, one of my favorite shows that use to come up on public TV here, never get tired of watching it =)

I told you Inval is the best of both worlds.

But if you want to pvp, and win, don't pick a melee char at all unless its a stalker.

First +HP is the best way to go now, and resists are still reliable, although be aware of DR and all of the related changes( paragon wiki is a decent source here). Defense at the momment is a joke. For PvE is still decent for defense though.
I really wish the elusivity numbers showed( assuming their even still there)

For a while there, defense did outperform for a bit, although not impossible to break through. One of their big problems in balancing defense is not everybody even with DR has equal levels of acc/to-hit available, in fact those with high levels could if on a unreliable basis break through defense when defense worked, it was largely the crowd that w/o that had real issues hitting defense based toons. And defense was balanced against that bunch. Unfortunately, all of your serious PvPer's do tend to have high levels of to-hit/ acc.

To be fair, Defense isn't entirely worthless. Just not worth building a character over.

I have 47% global acc from sets and 17% perma +ToHit from tactics on my blaster and I do miss some clutch moves sometimes (finishing TFs/snipes and the such). Its when BU/Aim are factored in that everything goes south.

Its somewhat impossible for them to keep defense from being either horrible or completely overpowered because the entire idea of it lends to the "dodge it all or take it all:live or die" idea. Even the route of moderation would inevitably lead to extremes in one direction or the other.

When it comes down to it, the "dodge" mechanic in MMOs (in this case, defense) has historically needed a bit of a backup plan (think vanish, cloak of shadows, and even iceblock in WoW). Ice armor is about as close as you'll come to this but the animation time can kill the fun somewhat.

But I digress. To keep on topic I would suggest, as others have, to go for +HP above all. Fire armor and Invuln are generally your two best bets. Maybe (big maybe) elec armor come i16.

@TheBro

solo pvp?

Cooler than every single owl EVER.

I don't think that it's "entirely" impossible. I do think that it is quite hard to accomplish though, but that it can be accomplished to at least an "extent."

One thing the dev's could have done, instead of nerfing Elusivity into oblivion from 30 pts to a mere...10 pts...is they could have simply cut that number in half. Elusivity at 15 to at most 20 pts would have been a MUCH better figure for them to nerf to, as those values would have at least had "some" impact in pvp still. At 10 pts...it's garbage and I hardly even know if it's really even there half the time.

But we all know the dev's....nerf hard or go home...
