Kheld Videos

Hey, since I plan on making more Kheld-related and general videos later on down the line in addition to the two videos that I'm already working on, I figured I should go ahead and start an "update" thread for it...

Here's the latest info on the 2 I'm working on right now:

I recorded the /demorecord files (without the UI) to video format via Fraps today... These videos are the most likely to be used for the Test Server Promo video, as I have more control over the video--meaning, I can resize, zoom in, letterbox it for a more cinematic feel, etc... On the UI version of the video, I don't have that luxury, because resizing it or letterboxing it would cut off much of the UI, making it look a bit weird... The UI video will most likely be used for the "All Kheld iTF Highlight Reel" music video, as most people watching it on YouTube will want to see stuff like that.

Anyway, I figured I'd leave you with a screenshot showing "Stage 1" of the editing process... At the time I captured this, it was conforming the .AVI files from the non-UI video I had just imported...

Yes, I have a triple-screen monitor setup. :P

Ciao!

That looks quite a complicated program.

But I am so jealous of the 3 screens

Using Adobe Premiere, I gather? Good program. (I'll be picking up a copy of that myself sometime over the next month - that way I'll have that AND Sony Vegas Movie Studio.)

Advice? No, people on YouTube do NOT want to see the UI. Even on a high-quality video, the UI clutters things up, unless you are deliberately trying to show names or numbers or chat. Otherwise, leave it off.

Good luck with the vid!

Well, the problem with /demorecord is that it's bugged. For some reason, it doesn't like to show Kheldian shape-shifting back to human form from one of the other forms... That's my only problem with my non-UI footage... I have footage where I'm running around in dwarf form with super speed on, because the demorecord playback won't switch the dwarf form back to human...

Didn't do a whole lot with it today... I downloaded high-rez images for NCSoft, Cryptic, City of Heroes/Villains, and Paragon Studios today, and worked with them a bit in Photoshop... I also imported my own "WatsonFilms" logo intro animation as well, and listened to the music a few times through to determine what I'm cutting and where...

More to come tomorrow!

When I can muster the energy to use more than two brain cells at a time, I might have you send me your demo footage. Might be some way I can fix that.

That should be pretty easy to fix, actually. If you open up the demo in a text editor and search for your character name. It would look something like this:

That is the costume definition of your character. Make a note of the second number, in this case 1, that is the entity number of your character. Now, when you shapeshift, the demo will have a line like this:

Code:
0 1 NPC Kheldian_Nova_Peacebringer
That is replacing entity 1 (you) with a Nova model. Now, to see what happens when you switch back to human form, search for "EntityId COSTUME" (in this case, "1 COSTUME", I just copy it from the above) and you'll find this:

Code:
0 1 COSTUME 1 aad2f6 -12.955290 -0.742962 0.000000 -0.291235 -0.802721 -0.253417 -0.568551 -0.040377 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000
0 1 PARTSNAME shorts skin_tights bikini_3 ababab 003d3d
0 1 PARTSNAME Tight !Chest_V_Fem_Skin_TankTop_01 !Chest_V_Fem_Skin_TankTop_01_Mask ababab 003d3d
...(The rest here, truncated for readability)...
Do you see what's missing? Yep, the first line from above. So if you paste that (in this case, "0 1 NEW Polymorphism") in a new line before the rest of the costume definitions, you should be set.

Just in case, here is a zip with two examples. It contains four files:

(My first Frost Fire attempt. I didn't have breakfrees. Fail!)
poly_ff01.cohdemo
poly_ff01_modified.cohdemo

(The Hopkins "fight" and some trash. Unslotted Dwarf attacks, fail!)
poly_Hopkins.cohdemo
poly_Hopkins_modified.cohdemo

The first is an easier example (just search for 'costume'). The second has more crap in it, but includes the Dwarf form and a couple more non form moves (instead of just being held :P). The demos themselves are fail, but I never claimed to be an awesome Kheld player.

I think it depends on what the video is supposed to be.

If it's supposed to be just gameplay, or showing off impressive stunts, not having the UI is a major detraction, for me. Being able to see health bars, for example, makes things exciting when you're cruising the bottom 25% of your health bar and still pull off a win - for example.

If you're trying to make a cinematic piece though (story, quick clips timed to music / beats, etc), then I'd agree that it's better without the UI.

In the case of the all Kheld highlight reel? I think I'd want to see the UI.

Awesome, thanks!!! I'm not sure if it'd be entirely worth it to go through the entire file and do that, since I have a set of 5 files that are around 25MB each in size (HUGE for a text file), but that's extremely helpful information to have, especially since I've been thinking about starting a video series on some of my toons, and that would help with stuff like that. Again, thanks!

And, yeah, that's the way I was planning the videos.... The promo video advertising the event I was going to use no UI and make it "cinematic", and the all-Kheld iTF highlight reel/music video I was going to use the UI for "This really happened" purposes

Today I edited down the music from about 4 and a half min to 2 and a half min for the promo video, laid it down, and laid down all the "intro" logos, as well as a couple of shots... Decided that the titles will look better done animated in After Effects than doing generic ones in Premiere Pro... Still working on the "timing" feel of it, when and when not to use slow and fast motion, and where to place the titling for it...

Overall, I think it will turn out to be exciting and "epic" feeling, and hopefully will interest the CoX community enough to see the event for themselves...

I'm actually sitting here working on the promo video right now... I'm naming all the subclips and determining which clips go in and which don't... I'm also trying to time a lot of it to the music, and add some fast-to-slow and slow-to-fast motion effects for an even higher "cool" factor...

From what it looks like (I take breaks to do TFs and team up with my coalition mates), I should be done with the promo video by Sunday evening, and I hope to post a link to it by Monday morning/afternoon, barring any "technical difficulties"...

Hope everyone likes it! Ok, back to editing....

I've started working on animated titling for it now in After Effects... Gonna pull an all-nighter to see if I can get it done by this evening, so I can post a link by Mon. morning... Also still re-arranging shots, and rendering slo/fast motion shots, and tweaking it further to time with the music...

Ok, back to work....

Titles are finished and rendered, as well as inserted into the timeline.... Still doing shot selection and timing... Trying to get it to where the shots continually build with the music (VERY tedious work)... Also inserted a funny still from the 2nd all Kheld iTF I held in order to capture this footage... Made the decision to change the title animation from what I had it on that last pic I posted here to something that matched more the mood of the "trailer"... Yes, title animations have "moods" too... :P

All in all, it's coming along nicely, and so far I'm right on schedule... Stand by!

I'm at 95% and counting.... Still haven't been to bed yet, but I got a good supply of Mt. Dew to keep me on schedule... I showed what I have done so far to a couple of my CoH r/l friends, and their reaction was "hehe....YES!"

So... I think they'll be at the event too...

If this video doesn't excite 'ya about an all Kheld iTF, I don't know what will...

Well, in this particular case, I only used After Effects for the titling, which I kept pretty simple... So, I hope the video's not a disappointment... There won't be any "special effects" in it (other than fast or slow motion), but there was quite a bit of editing and shots put into it to "build climax" along with the music...

Well, you can judge for yourself... I'm done with it! The video's exporting now... Will post a link as soon as I get it online.

Very nice job! I can't see any reason why an all Kheldian TF shouldn't be trivial, let alone possible. A whole team's worth of players capable of tanking, blasting, buffing, debuffing and controlling to taste? Heh. Looks like it was a blast!

In Canada for years you could buy Mountain Dew but it had no caffeine in it. Which was worse really - the tease and all. It's better now.

Just watched it w/o sound (at work), I'll watch again at home. It looks good, although I'd personally shorten the text-bits in the beginning and settle for "ALL KHELDIAN ITF", instead of the bit about "Imperious Task Force".

All in all, excellent work and gratz on the completion of yet another AKITF!

Clearly, AKITF's aren't really that difficult to pull off, but they're certainly fun! We should, after having the event itself, move on to AKSTF's... har har har!

I believe that a Kheldian Gold Standard should be based on SO's, and for anything above that... there's Platinum!

ahhh, but you watched it without sound... :P When you hear the music, you'll understand why I wanted to start the video when I did... I thought about including a quick flash of video in between the titles to hold people's attention better, but I decided against it last second... I could probably add that back, but I've already begun work on 2 seperate videos...

You did a nice job on that, Alien. I did notice and appreciate how you timed things. Many people don't bother (or don't have the tools) to do that. Kudos!

A couple critiques:

  • Always, always list the music used in the credits. It not only gives the artist credit, but allows people who like the music found in the movie to find / buy it if they like it. (This is even more important for tracks without lyrics, since you can't just google a few sentences.)
  • Next time you do a cinematic video like that, I'd suggest turning off the overhead numbers / names, they were distracting to the quality of the rest of the video. Just in case you don't know how, hit tilde while playing back a demo and type disable2d 1 and you'll be good to go. (Keep in mind the console will be hidden too, even though it's still open.) If you want to show the numbers/names again, use disable2d 0 instead.

Thanks for the critiques! Yeah, I didn't put the music in the credits, but the music is credited in the YouTube video description area--I put "music is 'Necris Attacks' by Jesper Kyd." However, yeah, I can see if the video is being distributed in any other way other than streaming form with the credits in the description (i.e. allowing people to download the HQ version like I was), then it needs to be in the credits. Oversight on my part. :/

Also, thanks for the command advice! If I would have known how to do that when I was putting the video together, I would have definitely done it... Do you have a list of commands that are available for what I can do in a command console during a demo playback? For example, is there a way to enable the UI in a demo playback? When I recorded that TF, I was using /demorecord AND recording in Fraps (for the UI) simultaneously... If there were a way I could turn the UI on and off in a demo playback, I wouldn't have to do that, and it would take fewer resources up on my computer next time...

...Any help is greatly appreciated!

Great work The one, looks very nice.
