Computer problem question(NOT CoH related)

OK, this is my problem:

My computer only works in spurts. What I mean is, every minute or two my computer will lock up for thirty seconds or so. It doesn't matter what I'm doing. I can be surfing the web, playing CoH, or looking through random folders. It will just lock up. Sometimes completely, other times I can move my mouse pointer. By lock up, I mean freeze.

I always have processexplorer running. It will tell such things as everything running on my comp, CPU usage, and RAM usage. When my system locks up my CPU usage will drop to 0-5%.

I tried cleaning out all the dust from my tower(it was kinda dusty), I tried reinstalling Windows Vista(hoping it was a bad virus), and I'm positive it is not a heating issue(I have good fan and it is working).

Today when I tried to start my comp it stayed at the Vista loading screen for three minutes before I shut it off. It is usually at that screen for a very small amount of time.

So any general thoughts on what the problem might be? My roommate(who knows his stuff very well) thinks it is probably a hard drive problem.

Any thoughts or extra questions are appreciated.

Well, first off, what are your computer specs? CPU, RAM amount and speed, PSU, GPU. Also, what temps are you getting on your CPU and GPU? Is your PC overclocked at all? What type of case do you have, and is there adequate airflow? Without that info, I'll make a guess and say it might be related to your power supply. Usually when a system locks up, or shuts down, it's a power supply issue, because the system is not getting a steady supply of power. If it's not the PSU, it could perhaps be the motherboard.

IF you give us some more info on your system, we might be able to help better.

Give us a CoHHelper report and a HijackThis log.

DO you get a busy hour glass when this happens looking for folders or what not??

I would diable the CDROM just in case that is going out. Just remove the power from it.

also to make sure ad/spy ware is not a issue run Hijackthis (link in post above).

Good one!

Had the same happen to me a few years back with a half dead cd-rom causing issues.

With not much to go by this is a very good suggestion.
