New computer problems

I just finished downloading the windows updates on my new computer and wanted to run City Of Heroes. I had copied the game files off of my old computer, but starting it up resulted in an hour and a half download/fix. Now when a start it up, I get the backgournd music (complete with the bleeps when I push buttons), but the screen is black. I've upgraded from XP on a 1.6 GHz to Vista on an i7 core CPU with a GTX GeForce 285 graphics card. Currently I have my same old CRT monitor. Any thoughts on what the problem might be and how to fix it?

Try using the graphics driver 185.85. I've had the same thing happen and this driver, for whatever reason, seems to work with COx the best.

Here's the link for the 64 bit WHQL (release version)

So this worked for your 285 card? I only ask because my drivers are version 8.15.11.8635, which seems like quite a different number than version 185.85. I'm honestly nervous about changing drivers to something with such a different number because I worry about the screen going black if I screw something up.

he is saying you need to roll back your driver to an earlier version. the 186 drivers have had issues with CoH and most people have had success with the 185.85 nvidia drivers.

also most of the newer cards all use the same drivers, so a 285, 260 and 295 will all use the same driver.

Yes, this is what I'm using on my gtx 280 (more or less, the same thing as a 285) as I type this. I'm not sure what number you're looking at, however. Go to your Nvidia control panel and click the "system information" in the bottom left. You should see this number after "driver version."

The driver version is actually the last 5 numbers of the long string of numbers you see. So, your drivers are version 186.35 which is a driver that had known issues.

Uninstall the video drivers, boot into safe mode, run Driver Sweeper to remove ALL video drivers, boot into normal windows and install the 185.85 drivers. Just make sure that you get the correct ones for your OS. Since I didn't see it listed as to whether you have the 32-bit version of Vista or the 64-bit version, you'll have to look for the right version of drivers for your version of the OS.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Thanks for all of the advice, folks. Knowing the issue with the driver numbers and having a quick explanation of how to unstall the old drivers while making sure that my screen still works takes a lot of anxiety out of doing this. The last thing I wanted to do was screw up a 2-day-old computer.

That's why you get a Restore DVD or a Restore partition on your new computer. If the manufacturer is too lazy or cheap to provide one or the other, if not both, it's time to look for a different manufacturer.
