I want a solo char

Ok, I traditionally stick to defenders, controllers, and tankers. But I want a character that I can pick up and solo any time, without being like, dependant on people. So I think I want a scrapper for that role.

So, what works the best? MA? BS? DM?

My only scrapper ever has been Spines/SR, which, though it can solo at level 35, its mostly AoE focused, aaaaand not really great for soloing with any great speed.

Thanks!

Pretty much anything will solo with decent speed. If you're running Spines and not soloing fast enough, it's probably because you're not playing to Spines' AoE strength and grouping up large clusters of enemies to burn down quickly.

If you're looking to build from scratch, kat/*, bs/*, */wp, and */regen are all known for their consistent performance. Mostly it's just identifying the pre-existing synergies (like claws/* or DM/* and any high end drain set because claws/* has much lower DPE than normal and DM/* has Dark Consumption) and then taking advantage of them.

They're all good for different reasons. Do you want to wield a sword? You want to be a martial artist? It should start with what you find appealing.

I have 3 pimped out scrappers and at any point in time I find them enjoyable solo or on a team:

spines/fire - he's great for tearing things up
ma/inv - very solid and tough as nails. Better than most tanks
dm/sd - lots of fun with end recovery and heal built in. Extremely survivable

I do have the following brutes that are lots of fun soloing too and now with the latest powerset proliferation up and coming as well as the possible /ela changes you may want to consider the following scrappers in i16:

dm/ela
elec/sd

Good luck, my feeling is you're going to get a lot of different responses here.

EDIT: And while I'm not personally a fan of broadsword's slow look and feel it does have a nice crunch to it. Try one of each to lvl 10 or so and if one of them makes you giggle like an idiot, stick with it.

Hmm, I may have to see if they have me giggling like an idiot..I like this plan.

In general DM, MA, BS or Katana are all going to give you good single-target damage. I'm more partial to Broadsword or Katana myself, you can have a couple of AoE attacks and still get excellent single-target damage. MA is fun too. The experts can tell you which of them has slightly better dps, but really it's a matter of which one you like best, they're all quite good.

A lot of ATs *can* solo, but across the board and straight out of the box it's hard to beat a scrapper for soloing, so I do think that's the right choice. ^_^

Beware my son. Once Scrapperlock takes hold, she doesn't let go.

The City of Heroes Community is a special one and I will always look fondly on my times arguing, discussing and playing with you all. Thanks and thanks to the developers for a special experience.

My vote would be for Dark Melee/Regen.

Quick Recovery at level 6 means that you'll never have Endurance issues--which is a huge plus in my book.

DM gives you a good attack chain early on, especially if you add in Air Superiority (no need to worry about redraw).

DM also gives you another heal in Siphon Life. This makes an already tough Regen Scrapper even harder to kill except by massive burst damage.

Finally, DM also gets you Touch of Fear. Oh, Touch of Fear, how I love thee! With it's long duration and nasty To Hit debuff, taking on multiple purple bosses is fairly easy, even with just SOs.

So, yeah, DM/Regen for the win (as the kiddies say).

Really, for scrappers, it's any/any. Spines/SR can solo surprisingly well if you build is well. It's a *little* slower against bosses, but minions and Lts go down really fast...fast enough that it's arguable that you'll clear missions faster than a single target oriented scrapper.

Spines scrappers don't solo. They street sweep. :P

lol...Man, I'm pretty biased. With thousands of hours logged for two I ran to 50. I gotta say spines has only done me wrong, when I played them carelessly. absolutely tear through things..I like to call it the more "Multipurpose AT". Groups? Elite Bosses? Not a problem. Even though I could not kill Jack or Eochai, I have sat there for a good 10 minutes just beating on them, very capable of holding its own. Regen is first, WP second, even though It will trump the regen in overall performance. My Regen was the first in depth thought about putting a toon together and making it great.

Oh and by the way, if you are mowing through full spawned 52's and 53's, you absolutely know playing invinc on solo is no problem whatsoever.

@Possible

A couple of this, a couple of that.

Scrappers in general are probably the best AT to pick up and solo. With knockback and mez protection in the early levels in every powerset, it means you'll spend a lot more time mowing things down rather than watching them beat on you while you are sleeping.

My first love when it comes to scrappers was my DB/Regen. Fast Healing and Quick Recovery are absolutely divine in the early levels and helps avoid the pre-stamina down times. Also I can't think of a better flowing powerset than DB with its animations and combos. Regen does require you to pay attention to your health more than some other secondaries, but with careful monitoring, you should be able to run quite consistently without a lot of down time.

My main toon now is a Kat/WP. WP takes a little bit of everything and makes one sweet secondary. Coupled with Divine Avalanche in Katana, you'll find yourself getting hit very little when facing melee combatants and makes for a smooth ride through the levels (although with AE, you can scream through the leveling process and then get a feel for the toon once it's around level 20).

Scrappers are addicting to play and are awesome for solo play. Just pick something run it through a few maps of the AE and you'll have all the powers you need to see how you like the toon.

Have fun!

Anything Scrapper will solo at a much greater speed then most anything else (in general, of course).

In particular, Broad Sword, Katana, Martial Arts and Dark Melee are all single target beasts. That's excellent for soloing since you won't be fighting a ton of enemies at once (usually). I personally like Broad Sword, it's got great weapon options compared to Katana (though Katana gets prettier animations).

As for a secondary, anything is great as well. However, since you're new to Scrappers you should probably shy away from "squishy" sets like Fiery Aura, Regeneration and Dark Armor. Those sets can be excellent, but require a bit more investment of skill and influence. Willpower is great early on, and becomes awesome with Quick Recovery at level 20. Invulnerability is good too, but you'll need to watch your endurance and you'll have to avoid Psi enemies like the plague. Super Reflexes gets godly, but is pretty suckish pre-SOs. Then it gets so-so, and once you get your AoE defense it gets good.

All of that aside, you're pretty good with any/any. Go on concept, and you'll have more fun.

Katana/Willpower is ridiculous straight out of the box and only becomes zanier with IOs. Unarguably the character I have the most fun with when I'm in a mood to not use complex tactics or battle plans and just rush in and mash every button I have.
