1) return receipts are turned on.
2) it's saving a copy.(unlikely as there is usually a folder for this)
beyond those, no idea.
I think this is an unfortunate side effect of the forum migration.
I got the same thing Bill. It's like there was some sort of backdating used that grabbed a lot of deleted messages.
Same happened to me. I may be imagining this, but I could swear when I switched from Hero skin to Villain skin is when my inbox filled up. Did you just switch skins?

ALL of your PMs made the switch. Even ones you deleted. I know, because before the switch, I only had about 10 in my inbox, and after, I had over 100. I looked, and saw they went alllll the way back to my very first PM, in March of 2008.
Just check the box on the far right of the Private Messages In Folder: Inbox header, and it will select all the PMs on that page. Scroll down, and choose Mark As Read from the drop down menu. Repeat for each page of PMs you have.

[edit] I did try it, closed the browser session, then opened a new browser session, navigated back to the forums, logged back in and ... same 3 I had when I left. Maybe it depends on when it was you deleted the messages - I copied out and deleted the vast majority of mine the day the announcement was made that they wouldn't be making the trip over to the new forums. <shrug> [/edit]
