1st: You can keep Shield Charge and still solo AVs and Pylons.
2nd: Shadow Maul is more of a set mule than an attack. It may seem kinda odd putting the purple set in it, but you only need 5 slots out of that set and Oblit needs all six for the melee defense bonus, crucial for reaching the softcap.
3rd: That much. I don't know the exact recharge numbers needed for each attack off the top of my head, but I do know that the above build, with Hasten running will be able to run the Smite->Siphon Life->Smite->Midnight Grasp chain seamlessly.
4th: I went with all three. It works wonderfully.
5th: You could, but with their end requirements I would recommend it. The attack chain I mentioned, with 33% end reduction in each attack, would use 4 endurance per second. Of course, an IO'd build would be more efficient, but if you're AV soloing you need all the endurance you can get, especially if you're not using inspirations. Conserve Power from the Body Mastery APP would be worth looking into if you go that route.
6th: The melee and PBAoE sets may be all you'll be able to find room for. Unless you're willing to shell out the big bucks for the Gladiator +3% defense (which stacks with its Steadfast Protection counterpart) you may end up sacrificing softcapping for the purples, which I don't consider an equal trade. If you're IOing, I would consider reaching the softcap the utmost goal of the build. Everything else is secondary.

1st question: Can I keep Shield Charge and still be capable of putting out enough single-target DPS to take down hard targets like pylons and AVs? Please? Can I? I would like the character to maintain some general utility, since I don't feel like spending billions of inf twice. Yet. 2nd question: Shadow Maul: Right out? I'm thinking Midnight Grasp, Smite, and Siphon Life would be my big attacks, with Shadow Punch loaded with procs as filler? 3rd question: Just how much global recharge will I need? 4th question: Siphon Life: Slot for damage, slot for heal, or try to frankenslot for both and get my set bonuses elsewhere? 5th question: Can I softcap with Maneuvers and Tactics, or do I have to get the fighting pool and *shudder* Focused Accuracy? 6th question: Where do I find room to slot purples? I'm having trouble finding room to slot all the sets I need for softcapping.... |
2. Shadow Maul is actually rather decent, my current build is Siphon Life - SM - Siphon Life - SM. Works well for solo, less well in teams where mobs scatter a bit and get in the way when trying to position ourselves.
3. Hrrmm... Lots <_< ? No idea about numbers though Demobot's your man... Er... bot.
4. Frankenslot without a doubt. It's a good attack *and* a good heal, so no reason to not have the best of both worlds. Without Soul Drain SP is healing for 254 HP and doing around 290 damage if I remember correctly.
5. There are as many builds as there are stars under the sky. Both are doable, just a matter of choice. I went for the Body epic because I like FA (pesky romans, pesky acc debuffers people like to put in MA) and because Conserve Power is always nice (even if dusty since Dark Consumption works like a charm).
6. If you can fork a billion or so for a PvP 3% def IO you'll have some wiggle room, if not.. not much. I'm pondering whether to buy some purples or to buy a PvP IO (not that there is even one for sale, less alone me making a billion to buy it). As it is I can buy the melee purple and the targeted AoE purple which is all the build takes anyway. As soon as the test room for the EU is up I intend to test Energy Torrent instead of SM so this is the build I have just for ideas.

2nd question: Shadow Maul: Right out? I'm thinking Midnight Grasp, Smite, and Siphon Life would be my big attacks, with Shadow Punch loaded with procs as filler?
|
3rd question: Just how much global recharge will I need? |
MG>Smite>Siphon>Smite will require 184% +rech in Smite, 235% +rech in MG, and 116% +rech in Siphon. You're probably going to want to get at least 140% +rech at least simply because MG is demanding.
4th question: Siphon Life: Slot for damage, slot for heal, or try to frankenslot for both and get my set bonuses elsewhere? |
One last comment. Demobot, I'm the only Umbral. The original. Anyone else that steals my name is but a pale imitation that shall die in a shower of blood, intestines, and darkness. You've been warned.
This is the build I'd be using if I ever get around to getting my own DM/SD to 50. Has solid resistances for a SD, good regeneration and recovery, softcapped defense, enough recharge to run MG -> Smite -> SL -> Smite. Attack chain burns 3.57 EPS with 2.44 EPS recovery. Full blue bar from DC (with 5 mobs in range) every 54 seconds with CP on standby. Empty slot in True Grit is for the Gladiator's Armor 3% defense IO.

Here is my build in True Grit there will be a full set of Panacea and in Tough there will be a Gladiator's Armor +Defense. I'll be 1% away from the soft cap to AoE but I'll have 90% recharge bonuses and close to 300% regeneration.

Dark/Shield Build Thread
Sweet. You guys are awesome. Looks like I wasn't too far off...
Here's what I came up with last night, softcapped to everything and with 72.5% global recharge. I'm going to pretend the Gladiator's Armor unique doesn't exist, since it's in game just to tease me....and I managed to NOT take Body Mastery, which I just don't like. Crossing my fingers that I'll have enough recovery to manage the end costs.
Thoughts? Comments? Flying monkeys?

Just looking really quick at your build, I would switch Dark Consumption and Grant Cover, and try to get some more recharge in DC. Also, replacing the end mod IO in Stamina with Performance Shifter: End Mod/Acc would get you a set bonus of +rec and make the +rec from Stamina only slightly lower. Edit: For more end help, try to get Portal Jockey and Atlas Medallion ASAP.
I would also recommend trying to fit Shadow Punch in there to help fill your attack chain (although Dark Blast will do that occasionally, it just has a much longer recharge). Also, replace the Apocalypse: Damage and Hetacomb: Damage with Damage/End, it will help you use a lot less end and do only slightly less damage.
It would be helpful if you put either a data chunk or a link to your build in there. It is easier for people to look at it in Mid's.
I might be a little late to the party, and I haven't looked at the build, but I might as well post what I wrote.
Yes, you can keep Shield Charge.
You can probably keep Sadow Maul. You're right about your main attacks. If you can pull off the recharge, you want Smite -> Midnight Grasp -> Smite -> Siphon Life as your chain. If not, one or two Shadow Punches as filler won't hurt you TOO bad, but does require an extra power pick, making it harder to fit in the other attacks you wanted instead.
For the best chain, you'd need +235% recharge in Smite. Figure 90% from slotting, 70% from Hasten, and you're looking at 75% global recharge from sets. If you throw in a couple Shadow Punches, your recharge requirement drops to +128%, allowing you to skip Hasten if you want.
Frankenslot for everything. Siphon Life is so critical that it's one of the very few powers I recommend frankenslotting rather than picking up set bonuses, though I still got some set bonuses out of mine with three Numinas. Here is kind of the definitive thread on Siphon Life slotting options.
Yes, you can softcap with Maneuvers and Tactics, but you'll get more survivability out of Tough and Weave.
Hmmm. Haven't tried to build a DM/SD myself, so I'll leave where to slot purples to others. Looking at other replies, I agree that just putting them in the attacks may be enough. You shouldn't need five sets of purples. You're getting a lot from recharge, but not so much as to be worth sacrificing defense.

Videos of Other Stupid Scrapper Tricks
Ok, Mids build, take two. Swapped out Maneuvers and Tactics for Tough and Weave...I have to ditch Dark Consumption again but meh. Using Kick as a set mule lets me frankenslot Siphon Life better, I'll probably be switching it up a bit once I've had time to actually read through the Siphon Life thread...still sitting at 72.5% global recharge. Midnight Grasp is currently at 89.92% rech, Smite is at 43.43% but I don't think I can find anywhere else to stick the ToD....maybe if I pull the Def/End out of CJ (although that'll mean losing another +HP bonus and take me down to 44.9% AoE def...not sure how much difference that .1% is going to make) and pull a slot out of Tough, stick the ToD in Kick and put the Kinetic Combat in Smite, then use the last two slots to Frankenslot in some Dam, Acc and Rech?
Also, what code type should I be using on these forums? I want my post to look purty.

I have a softcapped dm/shield scrapper on whom I kept shadow maul, and use it all the time. It's crummy single target dps, especially vs AV's, but used right, it's an excellent AoE. I 6-slotted it with eradication. You loose a little damage, but the set bonuses are awesome. I have no purples in my build - they're just too expensive, and therefore I only have 35% global recharge and then hasten as well, but I have little difficulty soloing most AVs (curse you, Malaise!!), especially if I drag a bunch of minions to the fight to help fuel AAO. I cycle smite, MG, shadow punch, and SL and it gets the job done. Maybe not as fast as an optimized chain might, but I don't really care.
I went tough/weave and I run tough all the time. Even soft-capped, you get hit quite a bit, and it's nice when that one hit doesn't suddenly put you in the red.
I frankenslotted siphon life with 3 parts Touch of the Nictus, 3 parts Pounding Slugfest. That gives me 90% heal, about 60% damage, some ranged def IO bonus, and 9% accuracy bonus. Again, the damage on the attack is a bit lacking, but it doesn't seem to matter.
For a primary with a lot of AoE, you could skip shield charge, I suppose, though it's freakin' cool, but on dm, you'll have next to no AoE if you skip it, and that makes you junk on teams.
I just ran a LGTF and, well.. I'm really just waiting on the EU copy tool to be up (finnaly) and test switching SM for Energy Torrent.
SM's power is unquestioned, hitting for 500-600 damage when well saturated *and* with a scrapper's critical chance makes it really really nice for soloing. A simple chain of SL - SM lays the smack and keeps health up.
But on the whole, outside of soloing, I find that I seldom use SM at all because of the lengthy animation and the high chance I miscalculated/got pushed/someone got in my way (the usual teaming chaos) and only hit one mob.
That is annoying since it means no AoE outside my 38 secondSoul Drain + Shield Change combo, which *does* put the hurt on a whole spawn, but yeah, 38 seconds in-between.
All the downsides of ET (about half damage of SM, double the recharge, no criticals) end up balanced simply because we *do* end up spamming it and know we'll hit a fair number of mobs with its measly one second activation (plus KD mitigation).
I just don't want to burn a darn respec on live without testing first. Mids points at ET doing about 350 damage when well saturated which is not shabby at all for soloing either.
Yes but that means you're going to have to take either conserve power or focused accuracy and lazer beam eyes

Dark/Shield Build Thread
What I like to do for AoE is get all the mobs around me, target a mob in the middle that will survive Shield Charge, then Soul Drain and Shield Charge toward the edge of the group. Then you can immediately hit SM and if enough mobs are still alive it should easily hit 4 or 5 of them.
So, loads of builds and stuff between here and the top, but, as egotistical as I am (:P) I'll just drop to the bottom and say this:
Eva, it'll be okay, I've a present for you:

I'm also one of the few who take a less than franken-notable route on Siphon Life to push its recharge down even further while maintaining everything else except the Heal%. With 317% Regen through 149% Max HP, 13% each cycle on Siphon Life becomes more than sufficient ontop of everything else going on (but as they say "YMMV"). EPS is also sufficient to maintain your attack chain (I think it came out for a considerable length, been a while since I checked, but Dark Consumption readily fixes any concern anyway).
Now...if I were to throw a Glad 3% IO in there...heh, that would be another story and a Mid's Update and turmoil and time and...I just wont go there

Hmmm, took a look at that build John, the downside is that it has less recharge than my current working build, and I am not a fan of Tier 9s in general (my first melee toon was a /regen, i5 era). The upside: Dark Consumption. Currently I'm running without it, but I don't have Grant Cover yet and I don't run Tough....once I get some of the level 50 sets that should mitigate some of my end costs (I'm 43 and still have quite a few SOs), most of my recovery boosts are already in place though, so I'll have to see...might have to go back to the drawing board.
Some interesting stuff people come up with, mainly slotting choices my literal mind just wouldn't think of.

I keep seeing people working the Panacea and the Gladiatior +3% in their builds. Is it really wise?
It's not even a question of having a billion to burn for it as simply there being any for sale!
>_<
I keep looking, but I think I was lucky to see a Gladiator just once, from far away, ever since it's been a fat zero.

If you're really hard up looking for one, just go PvP. It's not like they're impossible to get a hold of.

Anyway....more tweaking, now I'm thinking about getting Focused Acc, (mostly as a Gaussian's mule, not something I'd actually be running most of the time, although it could be useful against Arachnos) so I can squeeze in Dark Consumption, stick some Eradication in there to keep everything softcapped, then remove the Kinetic Combat from Kick and redistribute the extra slots to Health and True Grit, for more +HP, regen, and some set bonuses from Numina's and Miracle. I like having the ranged attack, but I guess the Nemesis Staff will have to do.
Do the +heal bonuses from heal sets affect Siphon Life? Mids seems to indicate that they do.

Well, after a week waiting for the EU Copy Tool to be up I got tired and respecced on live to test Energy Torrent.
250 mill later I'm not that impressed. It crits, I'm not familiar with epic pools for scrappers so that was a pleasant surprise as I thought only scrapper primaries did that. But it's much heavier than SM so it kills my endurance to the point FA can't be run and CP comes out to play instead of gathering dust.
Damage is overall the same-ish. I used to need two Shield Charge and a bit more to finish two spawns of bosses, it's about the same with ET. I suppose there is some mitigation involved in ET what with the constant KD, but as it's one sturdy scrapper I don't really notice it much.
It's more satisfying to hit a whole spawn for around 200 damage but I'm missing SM already. I suppose I could test Exploding Shuriken next since it won't involve spending cash again, but Mids makes me shudder at 19 (!!) endurance per cast. And it ET was slow at around 8 seconds then ES with 10 seconds is even more sleep inducing.
At least ET does see a use when I also team, different from SM.
I made a DM/SD Scrapper before I knew it was awesome, but now that I do know, I wanna be awesome too. I have 3 level 50 Scrappers and have never soloed an AV...none of them can even take on a pylon *hangs head in shame* This could be the one though...
I know there are guides out there, but I'd rather try my hand at doing my own build rather than copying other people's. I need some help though.
