A couple of Brute questions..

Clouded

I'm considering finally playing villain side and leveling up a character to 50 (never made it past lvl 12 before) and since I tend to enjoy scrappers and Tankers most Hero side, the Brute or Stalkers seems to be the best fit for me.

Concerning the Brute..

- How much of a buff can Fury add when maxxed out?

- Does Fury require the brute to be hit or just swung at; ie. does a defensive set like Super Reflexes slow down the rate that Fury builds due to the enemies missing more often?

- Any advise on powerset combinations for a brute that will be playing solo 90%+ of the time, and likes to dive into swarms of mobs. I was considering Electric/WP/Mu as a possibility as well as DB/Dark/SM as my first thoughts.

- Any places, arcs or missions a solo Brute should look at avoiding for one reason or another?

+200% (100% Fury)

Just swung at.

Fire/WP or Fire/Inv.

None, brutes have no fear.

If you are new to brutes, elec/ and dual blades may not give the best impression as to how the AT plays. /dark may not be the best choice eighther for a first brute.

First thing you will notice is how much endo you go through, and how it is the deciding factor of how fast you plow through mobs. that is why i would save a /dark brute for a second or third, until you get the hang of fury and how it will affect your slotting choices.

a simple brute to start with would be super strength/willpower. ax/willpower is also not too bad. basically, a primary with some soft mitigation built in like knockdowns/holds/stuns can give you a bigger window for error while you learn the ropes. to that end, willpower is a pretty straight forward secondary for this. i would probably wait on /elec /dark/ and /fire for a first brute.

here is a generalized pattern for how I lvl my brutes.

lvl 1-5: i skip the missions is mercy. it is far faster to just smash everything in sight on the streets and then skip to port oakes. smash a few around the arachnos base till you get lvl 2 and then pick another attack. then, smash absolutly everything you see, grey cons, purples, whatever as you run towards the ferry to port oakes. never stop, never hesitate, use the inspirations that drop as soon as you get them. dont rest(unless your health and endo are both down to nothing, one or the other down- keep smashing!) if you die who cares respawn and start the trip over, lvl up while you are there. once you hit 5, go to port oakes for paper missions. I have lvled brutes to 5 in 10 minutes(less on my stone melle) this way. as for power choices, take attacks. you need attacks for smash.

lvl 5-21: run qwhatever missions you like, explore etc. i havent found an enjoyable "fast" way to run this lvl area. dont mistake that as not enjoyable, just not a fast way that i liked. on my brutes, i moved along pretty quickly, and only ran a toggle power if the situation called for it. fighting a lost boss? might want to turn on your mez toggle. nasty looking spawn ahaed? toggle up, fight a few, drop toggles off in mid fight as the mob thins out. toggles suck endo, you wont have any in this lvl range to spend on them unless they are needed. if you keep a fury bar relatively high, the mobs are defeated before they can take you out anyway. for power choices, its up to you. keep in mind things like dmg auras and other toggles take a lot of endo to run at this point, if you take willpower for example, you can lvl into the mid-high teens on the passives pretty easy, with the mez toggle thrown in here and there.

lvl 22: yay SO's! this plus stamina slotted will totally change your brute. endo problems arent totally gone(unless you took stamina and QR on willpower and slotted both by this point) but it is pretty easy to run toggles full time now. ride this to the 30's.

lvl 30: by now your build has matured, dmg auras are easy to work in and pay for (endo) and you have enough slots to be pretty tough. where you go from here is totally up to you and your build.

hope this helps

It looks like a full Fury bar gives you 200% damage bonus. My SS/Electric Armor Brute hovers in the 150% to 220% range for damage bonus when Rage is up running around solo (it's hard to keep the bar full solo). The Fury damage buff is so large that you should slot your attacks for accuracy and endurance reduction (not damage) early on so that you can keep running from fight to fight and keep Fury up.

Fury builds fastest from being attacked. Diving into a big group is the best way to build Fury in a hurry. Fury builds very slowly from your own attacks. Fury decays pretty quickly out of combat, so quick recovery, regen, and endurance drain/increase or healing power are very nice to have to reduce down time (and Fury loss) between fights.

I've played SS/Electric Armor to 41 (recently) and Energy/Energy to 38 (a couple years ago) with a fair amount of solo time, and I don't think it really makes a lot of difference which power set you choose if you're primarily solo. It really depends on your playstyle. Your experience with Scrappers and Tankers will give you a good feeling for playing the Brute. It's more robust than Scrappers, but less than Tankers. You should be able to take it from there.

SS/Electric Armor is a lot of fun once you have Foot Stomp and Power Sink. You can rock and roll non-stop and are pretty tough because EA is damage resistance, especially when fighting mobs with energy attacks (you can pretty much laugh at Wailers unless there's a ton of them). The Tier 9 Secondary Power Surge has a severe hit point and end loss when it expires.

Energy/Energy was pretty fun after Energy Drain (level 28) because you pretty much don't have to worry about endurance. /Energy is (mostly) defense based, which means you can be debuffed fairly easily and take a lot of damage in a hurry. But if you're solo a lot, that's not as much of consideration. (This character was on a server my friends no longer play on, so it has been languishing.)

I had a level 16 Electric/Electric Brute I deleted. I never could get into it; the attacks seemed off somehow. Jacob's Ladder is annoying to use.

Well, I took a look at Brutes in Mids and decided to see just what I could build.

This looks like an interesting combination.

Massive Recovery, Good Regeneration (67-111 Hp/sec), good single target and AoE damage and nearly capped Defense (taking RttC's debuff into account) against all major damage types.

The only flaws I can see are

- The hole in Psi defense (admittedly the least common damage type in the game)

- Weaker defense against attacks at range (but still more defense than a non-IO'd Super Reflexes character)

- A lack of the T9 power: Strength of Will (which I have yet to even put on an action bar on my WP Scrapper)

- and the loss of the sweep combo through not having Power Strike and 1000 Cuts.

Am I missing something? Because this looks like a fairly unbeatable damage machine.

Every Brute (come to think of it every AT) will have a weakness, it's built into the game and thanks for that, you can roll different flavors of brutes and enjoy them all. Most brutes will perform exceptionally once you get past the level 22 hurdle and start to SO or IO them.

DB/WP is a great combo, keep in mind -recov and drains/slows will kill you, and longbow eagles will be the most annoying enemy you will face, albeit not a challenge.

You really can't go wrong with brutes and playing to their strenghts, all primaries are fun and bring something to the table. DB and ElM have been my two 'least favorite' sets but that does not mean much since they are very popular and perform pretty well anyways.

On secondaries, WP is by far the easiest and cheapest brute you can have. The bang per buck you get out of WP is phenomenal from the get go. If you really, really plan to push your brute to the edges of performance and IO the crap out of him though, WP's pushable limit (consideing everything the market has to offer and going all out expense wise) is considerably behind other pimped out armor powers. You won't notice this at all unless you are comparing ultimate builds. If you like rolling alts and trying new things though looking at ultimate builds is irrelevant, due to the sheer amount of time and dedication it takes to get one toon geared up like that, redside, under current market conditions.

So you are saying that a WP Brute with roughly 40% defense to all damage types (+5% more vs. opponents in melee due to RttC), good S/L Resistance and Regeneration of 65-110 hp/sec is actually the weakest of the IO'd out Defensive sets?

Interesting as I would have pegged Electrical Defense and Super Reflexes as having lower overall survivability than the WP Brute I spec'd out above.

They are just about the same if you look at armors alone, however while WP gives you recovery and regen, SR and ELA will give you +Rech, which considering super builds is basically all that matters. All super builds have 40% or soft capped defense, it is a given now, nothing to be surprised at. All that matters is what you dont have to sacrifice when you get there, what exotics you are immune to, what keeps you alive when the RNG freaks out on you, and basically, most importantly how much +recharge you have so your atack chain goes into the 170+ DPS.

Dont get me wrong, I'm not saying a 40% def WP is going to be weak, far far far from it, great survivability, but it gives up so much in the other categories.

To the OP, just a word of warning. WP may cause dependence, feelings of awsomeness, expressions of "omg i'm still alive" and the urge to create dozens of other brutes. Do not use lightly. Please consult your local Fateweaver if things seem too easy.

There, now my conscience is clear.

Speed_Force, as food for thought here's my current "uber Brute".

The only insanely expensive IO on this build is one of the empty slots in Deflection. It's for the Gladiator's Armor 3% unique. The other slot is a Gladiator's Armor Resistance IO for the 2.5% recovery bonus. The reason I have a generic EndMod in Stamina is that the build is at the limit for 2.5% recovery bonuses. Switching it to a Performance Shifter would not yield any additional bonus.

Mids doesn't show it (because it hasn't been updated to deal with PvP IOs yet), but with the Gladiator's Armor unique, the build is over the Defense soft cap in melee/range/AoE with no teammates in range.

The main weakness this has in survivability compared to SR is less defense debuff resistance (gotta be careful when surrounded with debuffing foes like in the ITF), and it lacks SR's scaling damage resist. On the other hand, AAO buffs damage while debuffing enemy damage and Shield Charge is a massive damage PBAOE.

Well, this is the BD/WP Brute I was looking at in Mids.

Even with the nice defense levels he still manages to have 40% global recharge and I think a fairly good attack chain with:

BF-AS-VS-SS-PS

(Maybe adding in Soul Tentacles on every other cycle)

However, I don't have a spreadsheet or calculator that will tell me exactly what that would add up to in overall DPS.

Since this would be my first serious character Red side, I am trying to avoid pushing the budget too far as the character will have to essentially earn his own keep.

This looks to be a reasonable build for that with the idea that the more expensive IOs will have to be added in slowly as funds permit.
