Anyone got any suggestions for a build for an Ice/Ice tanker.. Been trying to work on one for a while off and on, but not got hugely far..

Looking for team oriented...

It'll help if you actually showed an attempt for people to know you really want one. Builds can take upto an hour from scratch. Some people may have Ice/Ice but it could be personal. Given the lack of them about it could be a long wait unless you do something that may take 15 mins to work on or reply to.

Well, seeing how my next project tanker is gonna be ice/ice since I don't know what to pair with my next WP, I am gonna take a stab at it. Back in a bit.

Dark Armor is like that kid you knew in school that didn't know when to shut up, and no matter how bad he got beaten down, he got right back up again and kept on talking.

mkay, got an Ice/Ice/Arctic build, concept toon, so all Ice. This thing should be just plain silly as far as survivability.

S/L defense softcapped, plenty of slows, lots of extra damage, 41.2hp/sec regen, just over 19 second recharge on EA so the defense buffs can be doubled permanently, Hoarfrost can be run permanently if you want the hp or just nice for a hefty heal every 2 mins. Hasten only has a 17 second downtime, so attack chain should be quick.

well, here it is, and as always YMMV

I do Ice/Ice/Ice, if I take Deths build (rather than use my own, mine is hawt, you can't touch hawt ) and adapt it for an alternative look (a look on "flexibility" rather than damage). But really players make a build work. I hope ya don't mind Deth.

Holy crap, my eyeballs!

Not one to complain, but I have a hard time reading these things on the forums, and usually just use a link to plug into mids, or import the datachunk.

I will try to read through it, all the code gives me a bloody headache.

if you reformat the export to phpBB/Zetaboards, it will work right.

I had to post this again because when importing it back into mine to check on it the base figures for frozen armour looked like something scrappers would have should they get it. I don't know why but what I had exported and what could be imported changed so I am trying again to see if it exports right.

I like Shannon's version of the build a bit more. Especially the N/E Defense department. For some reason you (Deth) have left Glacial Armour barely slotted, and picked much later than I'd recommend, like in your other Ice Armour builds.

Glacial Armor covers half of Ice Armour's Defense, so, IMO, it isn't a very good idea not to slot it well.

Deth done a good job for the speed he done it in and I picked up a couple of good things from it as most of the build was what he had already done, I just changed some of it for what would be additional flexibility that I like at the cost of some damage.

Edit: And I spent ages.

I like the changes shannon made, with the exception of taunt, but that is a personal thing. I hate taunt, I barely use it unless I am in a really crappy team. Frost on the other hand, well, yeah, I like damage to do my taunting for me, and kill at the same time :P.

As for Glacial Armour, well, yeah, I work under the "cap S/L def, screw the rest" mode of thought. Very rarely do you come across damage that doesn't have an s/l component to it. To be honest, it's never really been an issue for me. I actually skipped it in my SO build on my Ice/WM tanker, hasn't bit me in the *** yet. Is it better to have that defense, probably. I am not an in-game number cruncher, I leave that to others. I do look over their data, and I do make decisions based on what they post. I also make decisions based on what has worked for me infallibly in-game. I ran a 52 boss farm with my old fire/ice tank on test recently, just to see what happened. This was a pre-ED build, he was retired to test before all the ugly ED business came about and never had to witness it. He actually did rather well with that build. I adjusted his build to an IO build, but slotted with SOs. I do this on all my toons when I figure out how I want to build em initially. This build should have been more solid than the old build. It was not. Now, if I were to ever actually slot him with IOs, he would be a monster again, but I am not gonna waste that kinda effort for a toon only on test server. Anyway, my point it, if it aint broke, don't fix it. I only took glacial to hold the IO.

As for the build as a whole, it is my take on it, not a recommendation. I regularly recommend slotting for specific powers, but never for full builds. If anyone can't see my reasoning for what I do, I don't mind explaining it. I have and will never say that my way is the best possible way to go about it, there is always more than one way to skin a cat.

Here's my version, it has 45%+ defenses to smashing/lethal/energy/neg without EA, but it also has perma EA just in case. it also has 2 powers open(3 if you don't take taunt since taunt is not used for set enhancements), and doesn't use any epic powers so that is also open to personal preference. it also has 5 slots open, so you can add slots to random things, or six slot a completely new power. I haven't tested this yet, it's just what I plan to do, and criticism is welcome.

edit: actually you don't have to take ice patch or perma frost either if you don't want to.

Criticism is open, AND CRITICISM YOU SHALL RECIEVE!

Just yankin yer chain.

I like the foundation of this, but is gonna be silly expensive with all the kinetic combats. I like those too, so no worries.

What does worry me, no tough. Weave you can obviously do without, but that S/L resist is a must.

Permafrost is a garbage power. By not picking tough, however, it would have better served you to slot it with Steadfast Protection +3% def, and would have made perfect sense. This would have opened up your slotting for other than def in a couple other powers. The LAST thing you need on an ice tank is more cold resist, seeing how you are capped already without it.

Which leads me to another problem, no hibernate. Hibernate is a wonderful power. For 20 seconds nothing can touch you. Nothing. To make it even better, your health and end will fill up completely during that 20 seconds. You will have more than enough aggro to keep their attention while in Hibernate. This alone makes Ice/* a solid contender in modern tanking.

Numinas Convalescence in Hoarfrost is sexy, 6 slotting it in there is not. That +regen/+recovery unique is wasted in there.

Health needs more slots. Your regen is weak.

Leaving the epic open is not a bad idea, however, arctic mastery meshes so bloody well with ice/ice. When choosing an epic, I prefer to choose one that meshes with the set, or fills a gap. Stacking more slows on top of the slows you already get with ice/ice just makes sense.

I am gonna tinker with this, I like the base of the build, and will see what I can come up with. May or may not stick with the no fighting pool theme. Screw it, I will go without, change of pace.

Dark Armor is like that kid you knew in school that didn't know when to shut up, and no matter how bad he got beaten down, he got right back up again and kept on talking.

That all sounds like pretty good advice, this build is based purely on theory since i'm only 22(and I AE power leveled 14-22, mainly so I could catch up and do TF's with a friend though). I mainly picked permafrost up because I'm slightly worried about fire damage, seeing as how we don't get any defense to it, and a crappy resist to it(especially without permafrost).

I had no idea hibernate was that good, I figured taking me out of the fight for that long would end up hurting more than helping, sounds like it's truly useful though.

adding the steadfast into permafrost allowed me to take the numina's recov/regen out of hoar frost(andanother slot bringing it down to 4) and put it into health, it also allowed me to replace one of the kinetic combats with makos bite for more global damage(and some hp). I also threw a 3rd slot into heal and put a numina's heal in there for another 12% set regen bonus and some extra from health itself.

Part of the reason I really like this build is because it's really flexible, there's several open power choices (especially if you drop taunt and permafrost), and a 5 slots. changing it to a toughness/weave build is really easy, you just swap out taunt and throw those in, and change the kinetic combats to makos and drop the eradications from icicles and open up 3 extra slots.

thanks for the advice so far, i'll make some changes and post it back later tonight, as well as looking out for your version.

Alrighty, here is my adjustment to the build you posted.

I go up to level 41, so you have 3 power choices left, and can access the meat AND the potatoes of any of the epic pools. I go up to 43 for slots, leaving 12 to muck about with between the power choices you have left.

Now, I am not defense capped to S/L/E/N without EA, however, with the application to 1 target that mids uses, I am.

I still skipped fighting. I dropped Ice sword cus I hate it. Waste of slots, and crappy damage. I dropped frozen aura, well, just because I don't like it. PbAoE sleeps suck when you are aoeing everything all the time via your damage aura, and the damage isnt that great. Yes, I could turn off icicles, but then I have more crap to kill. Whereas, frozen touch will stack with the single target hold from any of the epic pools, except power mastery, and really, the one reason for that one, other than concept, is CP, which you don't need by any stretch of the imagination with this build. FA is nice, but not really all that necessary when there are more set bonuses for accuracy available.

Now, as for totals, 20% more regen, 2% more health. Same amount of +haste. 9% less bonus accuracy, 6% more bonus to-hit, and 6% less bonus damage.

Fair tradeoffs, but nothing hugely better as far as bonuses go.

The big difference in the builds is that you get one more power and more slots to play with.

read your follow-up, all valid choices. Most of my builds are based on theory, with a bit of experience, and a bit of research thrown in.

I like your take on it, and while I normally wouldnt pass on fighting, I like this build enough I just might. Now, without tough, when you git hit, it is going to be even more painful, but should still be livable.

As for the little bit of resist to fire in permafrost, yeah, fire is a big gaping hole. But, there isn't much pure fire damage in the game. Your defense will cover most of it, as most of it has a lethal component to it, and defense rolls take into consideration the component you have the highest resist to. Basically, when you do get hit with fire it's not going to be any worse than getting hit with S/L without tough. Anywho, time to get back to game, will check back on this later.

Hmm, I'm not a fan of Red Fortune for Ice Armor, (or Invul, for that matter) and there's certainly no reason to spend 5 slots on it. I think 4 slots of GotA or LotG gives better bonuses, and you can find a much better use for that 5th slot.

By themselves, Obliteration and Eradication are not good choices for Icicles since there is so little end reduction in the sets. I recommend 3-slotting Erad for the E/NE defense then adding, say, a Dam/End and Acc/End from another set. Four Kinetic Combat or Smashing Haymaker don't provide enough accuracy and damage for a heavily-used attack, so I always add a slot from another set unless they're slotted in a throwaway attack like Boxing.

_Deth_, if you're going to 5-slot BU with Gaussian's, why not add another slot and get the defense bonus?

And for both of you, slotting a full set of Mako's doesn't make any sense to me, either, since the defense bonus is pretty small considering it requires 6 slots to get it. Smashing Haymaker is MUCH cheaper and only takes 4 slots to get the same bonus!

In general, slotting CJ for defense is of minimal benefit since its base def value is so low. You're better off using those slots for something else.

I like the + damage and + recharge of red fortune, I personally don't think GotA is woth it at all. I could see more LotG in there, regen, hp, and acc are all nice, but I still prefer the damage na recharge to all those(although the other trade off is a few extra slots). 5 slots for 12.5% recharge and 2% global damage and fully enhancing a useful power sounds like a pretty decent deal to me.

for icicles, I think your going to have a hard time finding as good a value as 3 slots that are somewhat helpful(mainly the proc in icicles) and gives a global +3% damage. With all the toggles on the set only uses 1.09 end per second with this build, it recovers 2.85, and that's without EA(and only having one endurance mod in stamina) so not having much in the way of endurance saving isn't too big of a deal. none of the other AOE sets benefits come even close to the benefits of the proc + damage buff.

I personally think slotting 4 makos in an attack is a pretty worthwhile endeavor, it's a high level enhancement set, and it gives hp and global attack which are both nice. Adding 2 more slots on top of that to also get defense is a worthwhile endeavor IMO. This is especially true, since like you said, putting in smashing haymaker is usually not enough of a boost to a strong attack, so you'll probably end up 6 slotting anyways.

As for combat jumping, I'd have no problem ripping out the single LotG defense, but 10% regen is pretty decent and at the moment I don't really see a spot where I really want another slot. Although looking at it I can take the blessing of zephyrs out and still be 45%+ on energy/neg.

As far as attacks with kinetic combat/smashing haymaker, accuracy isn't a huge deal, even with kinetic combat in there it's over 105% accuracy.

ok, Fin, this time, you are way off base. All the major defenses are softcapped. with more than one mob in EA they are way past that. The end use in the build is minimal. and accuracy is no issue. You are on one hand saying to slot up with cheaper sets than obliterate, and at the same time saying to slot LotG, which last time i checked, were far from cheap.

If I hadn't spent some time monkeying with this build, I would normally have agreed with most of what you said. For once, someone has come up with a better than decent alternative.

Chalk it up to personal preference, then. IO builds are usually so slot-tight that I am very reluctant to use more than 4 slots on a res/def power unless there's a very desirable bonus.

The proc in Icicles is actually a very good idea, (and one I might steal) but IME, high-end toggles like Icicles can be a drag even on builds with an end recovery power if not slotted for end reduction. Admittedly though, that is less of a concern with Ice Melee than it would be for a more endurance heavy secondary.

Six-slotting, you mean? Normally I'd add another slot to SH or KC, so it would save one slot anyway. The other issue to consider is that this build has a lot of ways to get E/NE defense more easily than using Mako's, but it does NOT have an abundance of ST attacks for Melee defense.

I guess it comes down to a difference in philosophy; if possible, I like my attacks to be fully slotted without relying on set bonuses. That way, any set bonuses I get are just gravy.

Where did I say to slot cheaper sets than Obliteration? My objection to Oblit (though I like the proc idea) is that its set bonuses aren't as good for an Ice tank as Eradication, and that it has almost no endurance reduction, which I think is a bad idea for a high-end toggle like Icicles.

I recommended LotG and GotA because I like the bonuses more than RFs, but my main objection to the RF slotting is that I feel the 5th RF slot is a waste.

If I hadn't spent some time monkeying with this build, I would normally have agreed with most of what you said. For once, someone has come up with a better than decent alternative.
Sorry if I seemed overly critical, I didn't mean to suggest that they were bad builds. FWIW, I thought of my suggestions as tweaks rather than wholesale changes to weak builds.

Sorry, misquoted on the cost of oblit, meant Mako's.

Like I said, normally I would agree with you on just about all of those points, but like I said, in this build everything seems to work.

Chalk it up to personal preference, then. IO builds are usually so slot-tight that I am very reluctant to use more than 4 slots on a res/def power unless there's a very desirable bonus.
I generally look at it like this A. what would I slot anyways, and B. what would I have to slot elsewhere to get this particular bonus. For defense powers the answer to A, is about 4 slots, even if they were non set IO, i'd want some defense and MAYBE some end, depending on the build. The answer to B is a LOT, in the case of defense powers the reward is 12.5% global recharge(a pretty hefty number), in this case for the mere price of 2 slots more than I would normally go. Plus the small added bonus of 2% global damage increase.

The proc in Icicles is actually a very good idea, (and one I might steal) but IME, high-end toggles like Icicles can be a drag even on builds with an end recovery power if not slotted for end reduction. Admittedly though, that is less of a concern with Ice Melee than it would be for a more endurance heavy secondary.
unfortunately I'm still working my way up, so I wont know for quite a while how this build actually functions, but I don't foresee this being a problem. Even ignoring the endurance light secondary, with all the toggles on I gain significantly more endurance than I lose(more than 2 endurance per second gained after toggles, and that's with only one endurance mod in stamina), plus ice armor has EA going off every 25ish seconds.

Six-slotting, you mean? Normally I'd add another slot to SH or KC, so it would save one slot anyway. The other issue to consider is that this build has a lot of ways to get E/NE defense more easily than using Mako's, but it does NOT have an abundance of ST attacks for Melee defense.
I could agree with this if I was scrimping and scrounging for smashing/lethal defense, but it is in a pretty good abundance through my other powers. If I switched to 4 kinetic combat and 1 random dam/acc, I save one slot from that power, and I can take out 1 slot from EA or frozen aura. so I gain two slots, lose 3% global damage(almost guaranteed 3 slots or more to get back), and get a weaker non procing greater ice sword. The value of that trade is pretty questionable to me. I could use that to make the build more flexible though, say drop ice sword and add the kinetic combat into greater ice sword, save one slot and open up a power slot.

I guess it comes down to a difference in philosophy; if possible, I like my attacks to be fully slotted without relying on set bonuses. That way, any set bonuses I get are just gravy.
I agree for every stat except accuracy, you can always use more damage, you can usually use more recharge and endurance discount, but there's a certain point where accuracy doesn't really matter anymore. I never attempted to get global accuracy anywhere in this build, but its got 18% global accuracy buff, and if that makes a power accurate enough to hit most of the time it's good enough for me. With just the kinetic combats in there it is as accurate as if you put one level 50 accuracy IO(and had no other bonuses). That's as much as some people recommend in powers anyways. I personally prefer 2 accuracies, but the build has 5 slots open, so if I really wanted more accuracy/damage there's room for it.

Out of curiosity which GotA bonuses do you like more, run speed is only useful for situational builds(i'd say useless for this one), fire resists isn't really enough to help, 1.8% max end?, mes resist?, psy resist? None of those seem particularly helpful. On the othe rhand fortune has damage buff and 5% recharge(boht useful), and give better bonuses since it's a highe rlevel set. Luck of the gambler I can see, but it's very expensive, and the bonuses IMO are different not better. I'd much rather spend 5 slots and get the 5% recharge than spend 4 slots and get the worthless bonus's of GotA, or spend 4 slots(and a billion infamy) and get the regen/health/acc of LOTG. That one really does come down to personal preference(although I still don't understand GotA)

Anyway, no hard feelings, discussion breeds better builds!

I like any team make up for any of the game content as concept wins.

Icetank, stormie for a defender, 6 blappers, tower buffed LR, only the bugged repairmen are the problem.

Everyone having their own builds is commendable.

There are no musts deth . You said it yourself that there is more than one way to skin a cat and that was true, that's why I respect peoples power choices (try to as much as possible) and aim to suggest some slotting that might be, yet needn't be, of value. Like ya self, liking to do a take on it is all build suggesting is for me. I imagine your a guy like that really. I love these icons, I look like this in RL..honest.

yeah, is the reason I left tough and weave out of that alternative build. I am seriously thinking of going with it on my Ice/Ice, will be nice to not have fighting pool for once.
