Did they update Freedom?
Interesting question. Short form, I'm not sure. I haven't heard about any upgrades lately, but if someone has and has a link to share, please do so.
Server performance was very degraded, however, and IMO it was worse than the last 2x XP weekend. Based on my own observations, it felt like they "undid" the soft population cap they levied on Freedom and Virtue. I never saw us go into the red, but the performance sure felt like it was - previous 2x XP weekends, with the pop cap in place, general performance in the game was maintained to be very comfortable. Not nearly as much this time around, which leads me to suspect the soft cap was removed.

Really? The game ran super great for me. I didn't crash once. The last double xp weekend I would crash - go to log back on and it would be red and couldn't get back on...over and over again.

I saw a bunch of application crashes this weekend myself, where the GUI didn't even go to the "COH has experienced a crash, please upload a dump file so we can help", it just outright disappeared. Lag was pretty nasty too; my average Freedom ping (and I can DRIVE to the server, I'm close enough) is around 100ms, and this weekend I was seeing pings of 200 to 400ms.

I was on a bunch over the weekend, saturday afternoon/evening and Sunday specifically. I ran into 1 mapserver error and a little lag in populated areas as per usual, but otherwise everything ran pretty smoothly.
I was shocked.

I can't believe the server wasn't red at all over XP weekend. Did they update the server or is this awesome game losing popularity?

It's just that, with patrol XP, DXPW loses some of it's special "OMG XPXPXP!" factor.
And funnily enough, with all the jokes (joking or otherwise) about how overcrowded and inaccessible Freedom is during these events, it was some of the lower-pop servers that were having access issues this weekend.
When it bit Protector, I couldn't get in, so I opted to alt out on Freedom...
I'm honestly flabbergasted that these serveres have been this bad for so long. I remember in 2004 making my first character and the servers, especially Atlas Park would lag tremendously, I'm talking connection latency.
After five years I honestly cannot believe it hasn't gotten better. If there's a reason people are going to leave the game this is going to be one. I must have disconnected from the map server quite a few times over this weekend and I really think it shouldn't have happened seeing as this is still an MMO where people play.
I think they did update. But mabey it was a secret idk. But last Douple Xp i could never get on

However, I'd like to point out, there are more heroes per map now, than then. Back then, we'd hit about forty and a new instance would spawn (or was I the only schmuck hitting the mask counter mob and keeping score?) whereas now that is common and the connection bar is a stable green with no disconnects.
My old hotlinks don't work, but there was a redname who mentioned that the login servers would get a boost during the doubleXP weekend.
