my experiance so far (need help)
i fixed the problem by reinstalling the game and going through the 4hour patches again... however when i tried to change resalution again and restarted the game it stopped working again..
im on my last legs here...
anyone help ??
if not then i'll go without city of heros quiet happily after the trouble its caused me today.
Create on your desktop a shortcut to the game, it should look something like this:
D:\MMOs\CoH\CohUpdater.EU.exe
But replace the:
D:\MMOs\CoH\
With the directory that you have installed the game into. eg:
c:\Program Files\City of Heroes
That should get past the wrong username password thing, which is due to the installer creating a link on the desktop to reinstall the US client (which hasn't been fixed since the EU client launched to my best knowledge.
Not an expert on the graphics front as that card is a)ATI which I never use and b)So far above mine in terms of power I know nothing about it. However if you google a program called TweakCoH and get that you can adjust the graphics settings without having to log out from the game etc to apply the changes.
The long downloads shouldn't happen when you change graphics settings. I suspect the US and EU were on different versions which can happen as the updates are applied during normal maintenance periods which are different for EU and US.

Depending on whether you have it, disable any management apps like Castalyst Control Center before booting the game as its settings could be conflicting and overriding the client if you've edited them. Literally kill the process in the systray.
I've also been told many have issues with Vista64 and the game too - I believe theres some form of hotfix on the technical threads from a while back that someone posted. At work atm so can't dredge it up.
I would also gradiently disable ANY other apps running on vista while playing. If you have it enabled - also disable AERO within vista as this causes numerous issues with games, CoX in particular.
Also ensure you do the EU client fix as mentioned above to ensure you can login properly too. I would also try booting the client in Safe Mode (when launching theres a tickbox) to see if that allows it.
Also disable Water FX and Depth of Field FX too under the options as these are known to annoy the hell out of ATi cards.

ok well im uninstalling and reinstalling at the moment and retrying the game with all apps disabled + tweakcoh ..
what confuses me is the fact .. its only the CoH (EU) client which blackscreens the other one works fine but dosent allow login ..
i tried the shortcut thing as mentioned above but still wouldent allow me to login.
would exiting the game b4 waiting for the time to rundown effect login ?.
thats all i think thats causing it . im running this game on my 40in lcd television so 800x600 resolution looks pretty bad lol and i dont think the game supports the resolutions i normally use .
anyway i'll try again with tweakcoh and let ya know what happens.

The only reason for "long downloads" between boots of the game are shortcut issues - if the shortcut points to the wrong place, or is trying to find a version of the game that's not installed (US launcher when you have the EU game installed, as mentioned above).
Boot CoH (and double, triple and quadruple check that it's pointing a .EU.exe launcher at the game) in safe mode. That will make it look awful, but it should allow login.
And no, logging out of the game before the countdown timer expires will NOT cause any problems. The "Quit Now" button is there for a reason.

You will not be able to log into the US servers if you have a EU account - you need to use the EU.exe launcher shortcut as others have suggested. This is in your CoH directory - usually "C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.EU.exe"
Run the client in Windowed mode if you're having graphics resolution trouble. It's one of the options under the advanced Graphics settings, or you can change it manually via the registry at HKCU\Software\Cryptic\EUCoh (change fullScreen to 0). The game sometimes doesn't like very wide resolutions but seems to run on most standard 4:3 and 16:9 ratio resolutions without any problems providing your video drivers are robust.
Dont kick me in the nuts, but the NClauncher doesnt need shortcuts anymore, thats the new download link if anyone recently redownloaded it

i reinstalled the game and logged in fine ... played all day without loggin out lol ... however as soon as i log out i cannot log back in.
i dont understand this shortcut thing everyone is telling me to do.. as there is no cohupdater.eu.exe in the coh folder only a cohupdater.exe.
and even if i change the shortcut proporties to point to the none exsisting cohupdater.eu.exe the game will load up but still not let me log in.
can anyone clearify if there should be 2 different updaters in the coh directory?
oh forgot to add ..
i've tried the Nclauncher both clients on both north american and europian setting problem happens on each attempt .
i tried desktop shortcuts and running the update straight from the directory itself still no luck.
i really dont want to have to uninstall and reinstall everytime i want to play with 1 - 3hours worth of updating everytime.
there must be a solution .. as seems a bit silly for a pay to play game not allowing players to log into thier paid for accounts :P..
keep the ideas coming tho and i'll try em .. thanks for all the help so far too and thanks for the welcome golden_girl.

but i have fixed it!!
the cohupdater.eu.exe was for sumreason in my downloads folder ... and i tried shortcutting from there and it worked fine ...
windows vista is a pain sometimes .. ty to all i can play happy now =]

ok so im not really having a great start in this game and need some people to help me solve a few account issues im having. (i'll type them in a step by step of what happened since installing the game).
1.installed the city of heros 14 day free trial
2. loggin in fine made a character and realised resolution was set to 800x600 by default for some reason.
3.changed resolution to prefered number and was notified to "relog and exit the game for changes to take place"
4.exited the game and reloaded the launcher.
5.launcher started repairing files (taking 3-4hours).
6.after repair i loaded up the game and got into the loggin screen. tho this time when i typed in my account details he said "username or password is incorrect".
7. loggin into my master account on the ncsoft website and double checked my login details again and again and again login failed a total of 10 attempts.#
8. browsed the forums where people where saying maybe try the other client.
9. installed the other client and went through the fixes/downloading process over again (anoyed by now).
10. after install loaded up the new client only for it to black screen and not even reach the login screen.
so im stuck i have a full game account and neither client allows me to log in... any help would be great.
Windows Version: windows vista 64bit
graphics card: ati radeon 8750 hd 756mb
if i need to back date drivers could someone tell me which drivers? .... the only solution i found on the forums where for nvidea cards.
