Deaths Row ((Open RP))

(( Wow, quite suprised at the popularity of this thread now. The story is meant to be a recap of an event which happened on the EU server Union when Kings Row was chemically attacked, this is the first in a series (check Steal Canyon for the second) and was made back in June. You're all free to carry on with it, of course

Rebel:
A majority of the zone is covered, mostly around the residentual areas and the exits are all open. The gas is corrosive to plastics and common/softer metals so some makes of gas masks would only last a short about of time. The gas itself is meant to cause respiratry and heart spasms and failure, regenerators would be able to resist it but due to the origin of the poison it could eventually overpower the regeneration, depending on how powerful the healing factor is. ))

(( Well, that's what you get for having a thread on the first page marked as an Open RP. People join in. Anyway, if this is meant to be based on ingame events, that gives rise to another question - do you mind if we take it and run with it? Will likely not end up anywhere like where it did ingame. Also I take it no one's really running it as such, then?

IC post to come later tonight. ))

(( Yeah Us US server Rpers see Open Rp and think that there no set limits on the RP. Besides the keeping it to the aproved PG13 ratings.))

John moved to the body of a dead woman and closed her eyes. "You might not believe it lady but trust someone that been through something like this before. Your one of the lucky ones."

He looked at the TV as the reporter was stating Kings row was under lock down and considered a Hazard Zone. He needed to get out one way or another.

Glancing at his reflection once again. "John is dead, The Lost member I was is dead. All that is left is Dreg." Choosing his new name he left the apartment and headed into the madness that was now Kings Row.

There was only one place he felt safe after the destruction that made his home town into Boomtown. He headed for the sewer network entrance.

It didn't take long before he heard the sounds of the riots. The screams filled his ears the sounds of gun fire. He kept to the alleys trying to remain hidden when he spotted a group of three Skulls dragging a blond girl into the alley.

"Just give in we make you feel real good." One of the thugs said as his partners laughed at there captive.

Turning to go another way a memory flashed in his mind of another blond haired girl. His girlfriend from high school laughing in joy. Then a second memory her burnt and broken body her face slack in death killed in the Rikti attack.

Quickly he spun and trusted out his hands as he screamed both in his mind and with his voice. The resulting Telekinetic Thrust sent the three Skulls flying tossing them away from the girl. "It's a cape!" "No it's not look at him Some punk super moving in on our terf!" "I don't care if it's a hero or not get him!"

The three drew there weapons and charged. The fight was not long the Skulls had no defenses against the mental assault Dreg was sending them. The gun fire that hit his shoulder could be heard but chances was it was lost among the rest of the sounds of the Riots.

"Thank you" the blond girl said as she looked fearfully around. Dreg looked at her "Head to the hospital or that Longbow building where blue shield stationed. They be treating survivors there as well as protect you more."

She nodded and then looked at him "Why are you all bandaged up?" He blinked and thought about an excuse "The gas I'm hopping this will protect me and shield my skin from exposure. But the way I came seems clear now."

Eying the way she sighed and started running making her way for the hospital. He turned and continued to make his way for the sewer network.

(( That and we tend to keep forum RP and ingame RP more or less as seperate events in the history of the various characters. The whole concept of an RP thread for ingame events is a new one, at least for me. ))

He missed the escaping female mastermind as a result while he rummaged through a tactical pack strapped onto his arm.
Though he missed her actual exit, once he looked up he might still notice the exhaust trail she'd left behind as she rocketed away. Not that that mattered to her. He didn't appear to be following so she stopped and landed on a nearby rooftop to think. The chopper was parked halfway across the zone, cloaked on another rooftop. She'd thought it safer to come in on foot, another decision she now regretted. With this gas everywhere, the place would be swarming with heroes arriving to clean it up and keep looting at bay... was it still safe to make for her transport or would it be a better idea to head for the nearby sewer entrance?

She briefly considered the idea of going out through the tunnel to Galaxy City, but discarded that idea almost immediately. Even if it wasn't closed off in response to the emergency, she'd still get nailed by the police drones that patrolled near said tunnel. And getting out only to be thrown in the Zig didn't really appeal to her. Which left her helicopter, or the sewers. After some internal debating, she decided the chopper would be better. She didn't really want to leave it here, and the sewers was a more likely target for heroes and thugs alike trying to leave the area than some unimportant rooftop would be.

But it could wait, she decided. She wanted to get a sample of whatever this stuff was before she left, maybe she could use it for something. She wasn't in the business of using or trafficing in biological weapons (Even villains have standards) but who knows, with a little modification here and there it might turn out to be the next super fuel or some such. Unlikely, but enough to make her want to get some of it to study just in case.

Her deliberations were however interrupted by that same crisp monotone over her comm system. "Reporting. Uncontaminated atmosphere present, altitude...", Mac gave a series of altitudes, measured from ground, from sea level, even from the center of the Earth. Why it always added that last one she didn't know, but it wasn't a serious enough bug for her to go through its programming looking for it.

"Good to hear", she answered, relieved to know she could go up above the gas to refill her air if needed. "Now get back down here, I want to know everything you can tell me about this gas", she ordered.

"New orders: Return, Analyse unknown contaminant. Confirmed." High above, the flying assault bot abruptly cut its boosters and went into a complete freefall, reactivating them again only some few metres from the ground. It then simply stood there, until something happened to interrupt it or he finished finding out everything it could about the gas.

(( So, what's he find out? ))

This won't get rid of the stuff entirely, but you won't be keeling over unless you take a heavily concentrated whiff of that stuff." He tossed the syringe to Blake, and drew a silk cloth from a pocket, which he used to wipe the blood off his blade.
Blake caught it as his hands went back to normal, the small amount of light they were giving off into the green smoke cut off. He rolled up the sleeve on his left arm and stuck the syringe in the softer tissue on the underside of his arm. Tossing the needle on the ground, he re-rolled his sleeve, his breathing returning more to normal from the drug, but he still did not remove his make-shift mask.

"I'm Blake. Thanks for the hit," he said, gesturing with his head towards the syringe lying on the ground. "And what's your," the teen started before noticing something behind the man though the green mist. As a small breeze wafted by, the smoke cleared for an instant, and he saw the body of a middle-aged man, dead from intake of the gas.

Blake was frozen for a moment, then turned to the sword-wielder urgently. "Look, I'm sorry man, but I really have to go." Blake took a step towards running past him when he stopped, then looked at the other fearfully.

"I'm sorry, but do you have another one of those?" He said quickly, his eyes pleading "It's not for me, it's for my little sister."

"Oh. Sure." The man said, reaching back to his tactical pack and taking another syringe out. "Err. Word of warning here. In about three hours you're going to feel like you're being eaten alive. That'll be the liquid scouring your veigns. It'll hurt like a *****, but I think you can take it.

"But can your sister?" He finished softly, offering the syringe with a proferred hand.

Perez Park, Bettis Hills

In the deepest part of Perez Park, in the depths of the twisting forest, there was a place that sunlight never reached. A perpetually nightfall within the forest due to the thick layer of foilage above. Most of the plants and trees here were dead and rotton, but something about the place kept them strong and growing. The entire area smelled like a chemical lab, and one that ignored most industrial regulations for that matter. Strange oily black sacks of what vaguely resembled skin hung off of the labyrinth of trees that enclosed the area.

And in the center, there was a pool of utter darkness within a stone basin, and within that lurked Terrible Happenings.

The darkness rose. An oily torrent of vicious slime and goo spluttered upward like an oil geyser, being flung in every direction to splatter onto the ground, which steamed and hiss upon contact with the stuff. The pool of darkness slowly drained, and the muck oozed back together to take up a bestial form.

"REJOICE! For terrible things are about to happen! Hyssssahahahahahahaha..."

Yes, rejoice for terrible things will indeed happen.

The voice did not speak but rather reflected it's tone, emotion, pitch, and meaning into pure feeling and unfordable malice, pity, sorrow, happiness, love, hate, fear, pride, life, and death.

((Rotten, you literally gave intro my character for me. I was going to post almost that exact thing to the first person who responded. I hope you don't mind that I run with it. Plus... it sort of goes with her character more this way.))

The bandaged girl turned around and smiled at him. She had the utmost gratitude and respect for this man who saved her. She felt like she was protected by him, perhaps even loved. She felt like for the first time in her life that she was someone worth being.

She quickly discarded her blonde wig to reveal a scalp covered in beautiful grey-brown hair. She shook her head wildly and reached for a Skull's skully to cover her mouth and nose. She couldn't risk something possibly getting through to her. The skully gave her more of an appearance of a rebel rather than a damsel in distress.

"Um..." she coughed and nearly vomited from the poisonous gas. "Can you protect me? I don't feel safe anymore..."

Without pausing for an answer, the girl advanced and gently tugged on the man's sweatshirt. "Please, mister hero, please." Tears were beginning to form in her eyes -- perhaps from the gas, perhaps from being genuinely touched. "I know you told me that I should go to the hospital but I know they wont protect me! You're the only one that can protect me... please."

( I don't mind at all that you used my post. if you like I can edit my first post to change the hair color.)

Dreg turned feeling the touch eyes a bit wide. "hero? Me?" seeing the tears in her eyes he blinked his clear. "Um alright let me think... The gas seems to be hanging in low areas that means it's a heavy gas just barely light enough to be air born. Must be why whoever did this used explosives to spread it."

Looking around he spotted a fire escape. "So the safest place to be right now is up high. There up that fire escape to the roof." He started up himself he wasn't no gentleman just a survivor.

He did wonder why she wouldn't head to the Hospital but this was just a passing thought after all he was trying to avoid such places himself.

"What am I supposed to do?" he asked helplessly, his hands falling to his sides. "I don't know if she could take that. I mean probably, well maybe, I mean-" his voice rose until he stopped speaking and yelled in frustration, a wave of heat radiating off him.

"Subject has collapsed. Expected to regain consciousness in ten to fifteen minutes, Doctor."

"Basis of this theory?"

"Have faith. He's never succumbed to poison before. What makes you think he will this time?"

"Have you looked at the toxicology reports from his body?" Skjbene threw a jump drive at his assistant. "All the data is on there."

"Those have been delayed -- they might even be left over from previous immunities."

"No. This is something we haven't seen before... or for a long time."

By this time, Blake had attracted the attention of a voice of his very own. This one was very masculine, strong, skillful, powerful, almost lustful. He liked to be called Ri.

'Do not trust that man. By injecting yourself you might have already doomed yourself. I have reason to be suspicious of this man you stand before. I urge you to be suspicious, too. Do not mention me to him -- take the syringe, go rescue your sister, and seek me out. If you value your sister's life: do not let her know of the syringe or the man.'

Ri projected a flurry of emotions on to Blake. The strongest and most re-occurring would be those of brotherly love, distrust, respect, betrayal, hope, love, survival, life, death, and suspicion.

'If you wish to meet up with me before you find your sister, escape this man at once and I will appear. Remember: trust no one. Even yourself. I've seen people lose control of their own bodies. Do not allow this to happen to you. I'm counting on you.'

"Project Maddox is showing vital signs again."

"That's good. To be expected of my work. Administrate adrenaline next time he takes a rest. We don't want his heart to slow the beat until this toxin is clear."

"Understood. Is there any real scientific value to that?"

Skjbene began to laugh. "No. I just wanted to see what would happen if we threw him into over-drive. Maybe he would gain much more muscle mass or maybe he would gain speed. He works rather strangely... right now he's a small child. Who knows what he'll be in an hour."

"Very well." The subordinate left Skjbene alone and left him be.

"Look, I'm trained in a few mystic arts. If you let me come with you, I can probably help your sister without the syringe. All I ask in return is that we clean up scum between here and there as we go." He withdrew his hand with the syringe, but didn't put it away, in case Blake refused. "And for convenience's sake, I am 'He Who Lies.' Please don't judge me." He didn't seem to be aware of Blake's newfound bile-spewing "friendly" voice.

King's Row, Sewer System

Unseen by the various gangs that infested the sewers, something dark raced through the green filth that flowed through the tunnels. The much and slime darkened from green to utter black momentarily as it swam through in its primordial form, which honestly wasn't too different from the surrounding...stuff. At some point, it diverted itself and went up a pipeway that transfered it to a storm drain pipeway, and from there it worked its way upwards until it was spat onto the streets of Kings Row.

A storm drain spluttered as it seemed to overflow, and black gunk oozed from the gap and into the street, where it almost seemed to flow of its own accord off the street and into a side alley. The gas didn't seem to perturb it in the least, and this was odd, considering it was in the alley where one of the poison bombs had exploded, making it one of the highest concentrations of the poison in the zone. The slime pressed itself against the dumpster there, the metal suddenly corroding and breaking apart to allow the muck through. And it beheld the fallen Wolf within.

"So some little Pebble lost in a sea decided to make a ripple too large for its size. Hysssahahaha...I'm going to find you, little lost Pebble...And you will pay for this loss. Oh yes. Pay. Pay with more than you ever thought you had. The vicious black slime seemed to mumble to itself as it flowed over the wolf, almost like a dark blanket, and consumed it. It then oozed its way out of the dumpster and pressed deeper into the alleyway, eventually seeming to just seep into the ground, vanishing.

When the voice first spoke up, Blake was completely unphased, but when he actually listened to the voice, then it was an entirely different story. He listened to it in shock and feelings started to overwhelm him. This man in front of him was trying to kill him! Not to mention his little sister, and probably countless more people. His name was 'He who Lies', how helpful could he be? He probably just wanted to rob his apartment and laugh while his little sister and him died, watching with a smile on his face as they writhed in agony.

Blake's hands sent off a small heat wave in preparation for them to be lit on fire, and then, more than likely, for a fireball to be sent 'He Who Lies' way. As this was about to happen, another voice sounded in his head, one much more familiar, although equally unwelcome.

"Who was that, child? A friend?"

"I was about to ask you the same thing," Blake answered mentally.

"I don't like it. No more unknown voices in our he-"

"MY head."

"Fine. YOUR head. No more of it."

"Who are you, my dad?"

"Well, we're both technically dead..."

"Shut up, now. I will fricking-"

"What? Kill me? Hah! You suicidal mania-"

At that the voice was flown from Blake's head. The teen physically closed his eyes to get rid of any stray thoughts before turning to He Who Lies. "Thank you," Blake said, waving the syringe away. Starting to walk past He Who Lies towards his apartment, he continued "As long as we don't take too long. Which means we take care of them and move on." At that he gestured at the man's cloth that he had use to wipe his blade clean before starting a slow jog.

"What the Hell...?"

What appeared to be a tar-like, primordial muck rose from the grate of a nearby gutter, sliding along the ground before turning into a random alleyway. The thickness of the gas almost obscured his vision, but Revelin was certain that he'd observed at least that much.

"Hey, Doc, what's that thing?" His childish, inquisitive voice queried, walking nonchalantly toward the ooze with hands now buried in pockets. "Some byproduct of the gas?"

He was certain that it wasn't at least one thing: Safe. Especially now that he was observing it devour the corpse of some kind of wolf... thing... A War Wolf, most likely.

"... Odd..." But if nothing else, it convinced him to remain a good distance from this thing, tentatively following behind it until it disappated into the ground.

"What...?" Jogging up, he stood in the location where it had disappeared, crouching down and searching for any sign of it. "What is this thing...? This is solid concrete..."

Soon after this statement, Skjbene witnessed the ooze devour the War Wolf looking creature. "On second thought... just trail it. Do not be found."

The dead Hellion remained stoic.

"Oh, how droll. You fragile things just go to pieces these days if so much as a stiff breeze blows by." The roiling and seething mass of slime and muck oozed away from the mostly intact Hellion corpse and proceeded down the twisting tunnels, looking for more prey, and possibly even answers if at least one of them lived.

"That's one thing going for me," Blake said as he jogged along, keeping a wary eye out for any villains. Through the smoke he saw the pole of a street sign, and glancing up as he passed, recognized the street. "There should be an alley up on the right. We have to go through it and hop a fence. Cuts down on the big U-turn that we'd have to do," he said, glancing along the sides of buildings until he saw it. "Here it is. Come on," he said, every step he took reminding him he was getting closer to home.

Unfortunately for him, those steps would have to wait, for trying to pick a lock into the store's door that helped shape the alley was a group of six Skulls, obviously intent on filling their pockets with loot. If they survived the gas, that was. But right now, they had bigger problems than gas.

Blake stopped short in the alley-way. The Skulls noticed the two and stopped what they were doing. As much as he would rather fly over them, he had made a promise. You never knew how much a broken word would come back to haunt you.

"Let's hurry it up then," Blake said quickly, his hands already ignited with the orange glow of fire. A big ball of the flame soared towards the Skull that was picking the lock. It exploded on impact, sending deadly flames in every direction. The lock-pick in question got sent flying back farther than the rest, slamming into the tall wooden fence that Blake had mentioned. "Get the capes!" shouted one of them that was getting up off the ground.

"Analysis complete", the assault bot stated after some time, it its usual monotone. "Gas contains living DNA, rapidly mutating. Base compound displays similarities to arsenic, but is heavily enhanced by aforementioned DNA. Structure of DNA suggests possible source, mutant powers. Or science duplicating such." Its task complete, it returned to its default operating mode and took up a position just behind and slightly to the left of its mistress.

Said mistress took some time to think over the bot's results, then decided. "Hey Mac, we still have any of those magnetic storage containers? Think we might want to play it safe with this stuff, it's not as pervasive as those green crystal things we picked up a while back but probably just as deadly."

Mac ran a quick check of its inventory before replying, "Current inventory contains two containers matching stated specifications. However, one is occupied. Suggest using unoccupied container to acquire gas sample, confirm?", it requested, the AI easily determining what her likely next request would be.

"Go ahead", she replied, leaving him to do it and moving over to the edge of the rooftop. Laying on the edge, she activated the zoom and IR filter functions of her HUD to scan the nearby area for anything alive or moving. Mac hadn't stated what this gas was supposed to do beyond that it was dangerous, so she wanted to find someone not protected from it as she was to find out. And possibly to offer assistance, to find out if it was resistant to any cure if not simply to save lives.

"You're asking me to go into the sewers...?"

The boy glared at nothing in particular, replacing a random trash can with the mocking visage of Doctor Skjbene and scornfully viewing it accordingly.

"You're a real jerk, y'know? You know I can't refuse..."

A sigh, a broken storm drain, and a ghastly scent later, Revelin descended into the seedy underworld known as Paragon's sewers, giving pursuit to a Venom-esque black mass that threatened to devour random corpses, his entrance being rewarded by the sight of a black tail whipping around a corner, a rather... grisly Hellion leaving his remains along the sidewalk of the stream of sewage.

Dammit, my timing is perfect... That sucks!

Still, though, orders were orders. Dashing silently after the ooze, he could only hope the creature had disappeared again as he rounded the corner.

He Who Lies sprang into action, smoothly overshadowing the Skull who had just shouted and spearing him through the gut while he was still getting up.

And then one of his pals shot He Who Lies in the face. The porcelain that covered the lower-right section of his jaw shattered as the bullet impacted, but thankfully deflected. Beneath was a twisted and contorted mess of dark-red skin that seemed to be secreting something green, with folds and furrows that made it clear they were there to stay. Emblazoned and glowing a harsh purple was an arcane sigil.

But the offending skull did not get a chance to observe this. His head hit the pavement with a knife sticking out of it. The white-robed man freed his rapier and engaged two more of the group who were advancing with firemen's axes, while the remaining two advanced on Blake.

The boy rounded the corner to see the sludge barely a dozen feet away. Only now, instead of being nearly flat and slug-like, it was now a looming figure that seemed to fill the tunnel. Visible was a single Mortificator of the Vahzilok, who was staying stock-still on account of the tar-like being holding something red and glowing beneath his chin.

"Little little Mote, lost in the..." The words spoken were odd. They seemed old, primordial. But they stopped. The tall, looming figure of tar turned around, still holding the glowing claw under the Mortificator's chin. Four fiery eyes burned as they surveyed the youth. A very large grin split across the creature's face, releasing a pool of red and glowing "drool" that pooled across the ground, only to be mopped up by the thing's tail as it started to sweep the ground excitedly.

"Little lost Mote stays lost forever." The giant wolf declared. It raised its claw and decapitated the Mortificator, his head begining to melt and rot away as it came into contact with it, the corpse crashing into the sewage. "I think you can help me, Pebble of the Pond. Hysssahahahaha...How would I address a Pebble with such large ripples...?"
