... Doc... I hate you.

"You would address him as a man." He stated, the boldness of the statement likely having been hindered due to his form. Nonetheless, he was no actor, and thinly veiled fear leaked into his eyes. Nonetheless, Revelin stood his ground, boldly stepping fully around the corner so as to face the creatuer. A foolish maneuver, perhaps, but the Doc had something up his sleeve, right? He had to...

... Right?

The being is self-aware, at least. The mutilated corpses almost certainly appeared to have been interrogated, if not outright tortured, so, sadistic or not, it's intelligent. Does that mean I could talk to it? It did say I could help, though I'm not certain I like its tone.

... Dammit, I never should've written that editorial...

As Dreg sat down on the roof’s ledge she became uneasy. She had a fear of ledges after her attempted suicide – after all, what sane person doesn’t have a fear of ledges? She winced and timidly sat next to him but a little distance back.

Quote:
"Just what it means that I'm no longer human. Sometime after the Rikti destroyed my home I was exposed to mutagen compounds."
“Oh that’s terrible! Why did they destroy your home? Did you get them back? Did It hurt?” Xi seemed to be completely interested in the man, genuinely. Perhaps she was mentally ill somewhere along the line, perhaps she was just your typical cliché damsel in distress, perhaps she was simply insane, or even more so, perhaps she was a little bit of all of the above.

Quote:
He unwraps his hand reveling the twisted scarred flesh that was now his skin. "The real reason I'm dressed like this is this." He shows her his hand. "my entire body is like this, twisted and deformed."
Xi reached out towards the twisted and scarred flesh that belonged to John. She smiled at him, reached her hand out, and gently grabbed it. “John, you’re just unfortunate. You still want to live on, right?” She didn’t seem to be bothered at all by the fact that he wasn’t entirely human anymore.

"So what do we do now?"

----

Quote:
"It will start to work the very instant its injected." He Who Lies answered swiftly. "It is very efficient. The problem is that it's very abrasive to your veigns, so...after three hours...Just lie down somewhere comfy. You may want something to bite on." He finished, keeping pace with Blake.
’Run. Run. Start running NOW.

Ri’s voice seemed to scream in Blake’s mind.

Ri sensed that they were getting close to Blake’s home.

’Mislead him. Do not give him power to hurt you by getting to your sister. Find a home, bust the door down, look around, announce that your sister must have went to Longbow… take it from there. I’m telling you: it will be a mistake bringing him to your sister.

Ri sent a furry of unearthly emotions consisting purely of variations of betrayal, darkness, emptiness, closure, and his personal favorite, hope.

Quote:
And then one of his pals shot He Who Lies in the face. The porcelain that covered the lower-right section of his jaw shattered as the bullet impacted, but thankfully deflected. Beneath was a twisted and contorted mess of dark-red skin that seemed to be secreting something green, with folds and furrows that made it clear they were there to stay. Emblazoned and glowing a harsh purple was an arcane sigil.
Xi didn’t notice that He Who Lies looked anything like this, but he did notice that there was something off in the air.

Blake. I’m telling you. Run. I don’t like the feeling I get from him.

Xi realized that Blake probably trusted him as much as He Who Lies, but it couldn’t stop his heroic heart from trying. Xi looked out and down from a window and smiled crookedly at the large fence. Soon they would be here and he could see for himself just what this man was.

Doctor Skjbene lost track of time and resorted to simply measuring time in the amount of pen flips he did. He began twirling his pen in a very elaborate way only a bored executive could come up with. Then something caught his eye.

Revelin was rapidly approaching the ooze. What form would it take now, he wondered. All in due time.

“Oh? A shadow wolf?” Skjbene chuckled, “interesting. If I saw that thing in person I would think I was on acid.”

Skjbene began to bark orders, “I don’t care how you do it, but get that Vahzilok. Alive or dead. I want to run tests on him to see what it is that we’re going against. After you’re out of this situation, please radio in to transport, give them your position and they’ll take over with the extraction. Oh and, try not to die.”

He spoke those words so much like a machine he began to question his own flesh. Have I abandoned myself for science?

Fifty-five pen flips have gone by.

Still no word on that vaccine yet. If it works… then we’ve hit the jackpot, I should contact my superiors and begin preparations for a quarantine.

Blake. I’m telling you. Run. I don’t like the feeling I get from him.
It hit Blake like a sledgehammer. All the emotions going into his mind at once. It angered him, but made him feel strangely sad at the same time, almost like he was just a piece of paper that would soon be swept away. That was cancelled out, however, by the strong sense of hope he felt that he would find his sister and save her.

The words, however, never made it that far. The man who was projecting words into Blake's head would soon find words being projected into his.

"Do you think this is funny? Do you think this boy is a puppet and you are the master? I hate to inform you, sir, that you are very, very wrong.

"I am this boy's master. I tell him what to do. I say how much power he can use at any given moment. I say what power is best for the moment at hand. I mess with his head. I dictate what goes in and what goes out. I make him angry. I make him sad. I make him my puppet.

"And none of these plans include you. If you do not leave the boy alone, I will find you. And you will feel pain you have NEVER felt before."

And while Blake was oblivious to the war that was waging inside his head, he was not oblivious to the two Skulls charging him with baseball bats. One never made it near him as a blast from fire struck his face, burning it beyond recognition. The other took a swing at his head. Blake did the human thing and raised his arm in defense. The bat smashed against it with a large crack, sending waves of pain up and down his arm.

With his other arm, something appeared in his hand out of thin air. It was a sword made of pure fire that was soon sent slashing towards the Skull. Blake managed to catch his opponent's shoulder, burning it badly while having the double effect of a nice, deep cut.

He Who Lies expertly twisted out of every attack his opponents assaulted him with with ninja-like reflexes, jabbing each of them in their arms and legs with precise stabs of his rapier to disarm and incapacitate them. With both Skulls unable to get back up, he turned to Blake, the contents of the now broken porcelain plate revealed.

"If your arm is alright, we should get moving." He said, although not unkindly.

***

"Man." The large wolf repeated. "And so it was Man. And Man has always known me as Tienxia." The wolf trotted over on all fours, locking onto Revelin's eyes with his four fiery orbs. "Tell me, Man. The Plague is fouling the little Motes, wandering lost as they are. What Pebble caused that ripple...?" It stopped barely a foot short. It smelled like a chemical lab.

Interesting words, but Ri hadn't felt the entirety of the words. Truthfully, he never felt fully in this world since he could remember. He felt as if he were a phantasm, dust in the wind, a hallucination, a product of dreams, a knight in shining armor.

'Very well, your decision is simple. I respect your decision but I must tell you this: that man is bad. He is evil. He isn't of this world.

Werther or not these words were true, Ri didn't know. It was the feeling he received. He longed to help Blake, but in reality, he wasn't sure what this voice talking to him was.

The voice could be Blake's or it could be his own mind... or it cold be Ti. No. It couldn't be Ti. Ti didn't give warnings. Or did he in an attempt to throw him off? Ri leaned more towards the voice being Blake's will fighting back, resisting subconsciously, wanting to desperately break free of some form of contract unspoken.

'What if I could help you with your goals? Would you allow me to help you?

Emotions once more were the primary method of contact, as Ri determined that he could influence Blake's emotions directly but not inflict words into him. The mere thought of this provoked endless discussions internally.

Ri kept repeating his previous messages of hope, betrayal, darkness, emptiness, closure, and all the variations thereof in an effort to break through to this man.

"John!" Xi cried out in pain. "Someone's threatening me..." She clutched her head with one hand, the other, still holding on to Dreg's hand.

Unknown to her at the time, or possibly known but not acknowledged, Xi had attracted the attention of something unwanted, something her medication sought to get rid of, something powerful, wonderful, lustful, something other worldly.

"Neither am I" the voice laughed back.

"You want to help me? Very well. All you need to do is release me from this boy's soul. How to do that? I've no idea. Go to the Underworld and ask around. After I am free, I will re-pay you with whatever you desire. After I extract revenge on the boy, of course."

Blake nodded, swinging his arm in a couple of circles before walking towards the fence. "I hope you can jump," the teen said before he caught fire again, except this time it was his feet that were engulfed in flames. He rose up wards and over the fence, landing gently on the other side. As he waited for He Who Lies another wave of emotions struck him.

There were so many to choose from his subconcious was confused. First he felt a little depressed and gloomy, then he felt betrayed at the same time. By who, it was anyone's guess. He Who Lies jumped into his head first, and Blake had a good thought of just flying off while he could, until hope slithered into his mind again.

Blake remembered that he probably couldn't save Candice if he ditched He Who Lies. The teen didn't have any medical experience, and he would be lucky if he found his way next door through all this green fog. Nevertheless, he hoped he could make it in time. If he couldn't save his little sister, he may as well just sit out in the street and wait for the drug to wear off and hope the end is quick.

The Plague. The gas. Obvious.

The Motes? Slightly less so. The Plague is affecting the Motes, so the people?

And the Pebbles. Pebbles create ripples in water, which is what a mote is, so those with the power to change society? Meta-humans?

So he wants to know who released the gas.

"Unfortunately," Revelin continued, backing away slightly but feeling marginally better now that he had translated the Wolf's vocabulary, "I don't know. That's partially the reason that I'm here, so that I can find out myself."

Hopefully that would be satisfactory. If not, well, he'd yet to reveal his other ability...

Fear still sounded in his eyes, however, and Tienxia would no doubt see this. How he would react, though, was a different story.

He Who Lies popped over the fence and landed on his feet softly, his landing not evoking even the lightest of sounds. Come to think of it, he made zero noise while moving around. The man was very light-footed. He looked at Blake and frowned slightly.

"Are you ok?" He asked, gently implying that there was a variety of conflicting emotions storming across the youth's face.

"Oh?" Tienxia uttered. "Well then, 'Man,' it appears that we share a common goal. How much Carmot would you desire if I were to accompany you on your travels? Don't be meek. Greed is natural, and I have plenty to spare. Hysssahahahaha..." The wolf's eyes narrowed as it unleashed its harrowing, dry and rasping laughter. Its grin always seemed to be perpetually growing wider and wider, though that was probably just a trick of the creature's shifting, tar-like skin.

Blake shook his head around a little bit before answering. "Yeah, just feel really, weird all of a sudden." He shrugged and began walking down the alley again, turning right once they were free of the tight walls. "I don't know, a combination of all the **** going on, I guess."

He walked down the street in silence until he came to a four-way intersection. "This is my street," he said, pointing to the street that was directly to their left. "I live a bit down but we're almost there." With this he again broke into a slow jog, his legs pumping evenly, his mind set on the only thing that mattered right now: Candice, his little sister.

He looked at her hand holding his then at her. "How there's no one up here but us. I don't understand how I can aid you." The thought that this was a result of the gas.

Taking his hand from hers he re wrapped it and stood up. "Alright there is more to you then some girl in danger. Tell me everything or go from here alone."

Carmot? Money? But it seems so strange that a creature such as this should offer such a thing. It has to be something else. He seems like a product of magic, perhaps it's some kind of ritual?

"I'm unaware of the meaning of Carmot. However," He straigtened his back, facing the creature. "I'm certain we can work something out. If you would be so kind as to explain?"

I just need to be certain not to piss it off...

He Who Lies nodded absently and followed Blake, keeping a keen eye out for trouble. He occasionally reached up to his face, as if to touch the revulting sight there, but always refrained at the last moment.

***

Tienxia reared back his head, his eyes flaring again. The smile slackened somewhat.

"You don't know what Carmot is...? Hecate would laugh if she was still around. Hysssahahaha..." He shook his head, which may have either been out of sadness or amusement. "And to think your kind fussed over it so much as little as three hundred years ago...So much has changed. How to put this...What would the terminology be...?" The wolf raised a paw to its jaw, seeming to mockingly ponder his response. "...Hmm. The Stuff of Divinity? Star Matter? The Fifth Element? The Hidden Element? The Final Trigger? Alchemist Treasure? Inovation Manifest? The Golden Sun? It had a lot of names, really...But Carmot was always Carmot. Everyone knew what it was. And all of them, Motes, Pebbles, Secrets and Graces...They all wanted, NEEDED it. Hysssahahahahahahahaha..." The laugh seemed a bit more like an insane giggle this time around, but was no less dark.

The Stuff of Divinity? Star Matter? The Fifth Element? The Hidden Element? The Final Trigger? Alchemist Treasure? Inovation Manifest? The Golden Sun?

"The Philosopher's Stone? The famed material rumored to be able to transmute lead to gold? That?"

Staring up at this creature, wide-eyed, Revelin pondered.

Evidently, this thing is ancient. But why reveal itself now? Did the gas stir it? It's clearly interested, but why the gas, what with everything else that happens in King's Row?

"And you say you have plenty of this? Very well, I'll take you up on your offer. We'll discuss payment before we part ways."

Regardless of the creature's answer, this would be how Revelin replied. Truly, he was more interested in exiting the sewer system, as the heavy gas appeared to already be draining through the grates.

Blake continued walking, looking over to He Who Lies every now and then. The object of his interest seemed to be the thing on his face, the dark-red against the rest of his face. Finally, Blake decided to ask "Hey, are you okay? Shouldn't that be bleeding or something?"

Ri could now see them and he knew that if he could see them, they could see him. He only lay in waiting now -- but that’s all he really did, so there wasn’t much of a difference.

Skjbene didn’t quite know what to think but he knew that this creature was other worldly and possible more valuable to his research alive than dead. He observed the wolf’s mouth widening, a seeming optical illusion. He took notes upon this mentally, occasionally letting a mental sigh of interest.

“Revelin, work with this wolf but keep your distance. I want to observe it. Try to buy time, as well. I’m going to order a quarantine of the sewers and most of the residential area of King’s Row.”

Taking his hand from hers he re wrapped it and stood up. "Alright there is more to you then some girl in danger. Tell me everything or go from here alone."
“I just heard something in my head… it threatened me.” She muttered, clearly thinking everyone thought she was completely insane. “I hear voices. I always have...”

“I don’t even know why…” she began to trail off into space and started to cry. "Please don't leave me..."

----

Flash back to twenty minutes ago…

Skjbene was quickly escorted into the toxicology department where a small mountain of documents were laid out on an equally mountainous pile of tables. It would have been a humorous sight if the times weren’t so life-or-death.

“The antidote?” Skjbene questioned simply, coolly, and rather unconcerned as if he knew the answer already.

“Project Maddox.”

Cacophonous laughter erupted, Skjbene smiled, sighed, and announced, “who leaked information?”

The room and entire lab was silent at the first mention of the word “leaked.” In their world, leak either meant two things: “run, gas is leaking,” or “someone and their entire family is going to be disposed of very quickly.” This case was both, ironically.

Someone had to have leaked it from our lab. No one has even made advances this far into the world of genetic chemistry and engineering. If the gas evolves then it’s the perfect counter for Maddox, but it also means it was derived from Maddox most likely. Someone had to have leaked. So who?

Finally, someone offered an explanation, “perhaps it was the work of a rogue hacker?”

This only drove the entire crowd to laughter, after all, the man had been known as a joker.

Skjbene smiled and simply went on his way out of the toxicology lab, back into his private quarters and picked up the red phone that sat idly on the floor for so long.

He spoke three words, “quarantine King’s Row.” On that cue, thousands upon thousands of men were mobilized. Where from? Who knows.

“We’ve been dispatched.”

“Oh? Another call to exterminate a planet?”

“No, not this time. A little bit of quarantine work. Simple, really.”

“Sounds interesting. Is it urgent?”

“To the client, yes. To us? Hardly. What do we care if they live or die?”

“There’s much you don’t understand…”

“I understand. They’re just mere people, they can’t fathom the insignificant meaning they hold.”

“You don’t understand your insignificant meaning either.”

“Very well.”

"It's fine." He Who Lies said, smiling lightly. "Just a little accident I had. The porcelain kept enough pressure on it to keep it from bleeding, and it should be fine for a day or two." He looked around and frowned. "Do you get the feeling we're being watched...?"

Quote:
"The Philosopher's Stone? The famed material rumored to be able to transmute lead to gold? That?"
"Carmot can do quite. A bit. More. Than that. Hysssahahaha..." Tienxia said, parsing his words oddly. "But yes, in a manner of speaking. Now then, shall we...?" It extended its right paw, the glowing red claws retracting into the black tar. Almost as if it wanted to shake hands. "Pact. Acylote and Guardian. Man and Tienxia."

Well, if I don't, it'll seem rude. Again, I don't wanna piss this thing off...

Revelin's own hand extended, grasping the wolf's paw as best he could.

"Alright then. I am Revelin Maddox, for the record. Firstly, what have you discovered from interrogating these men?"

He gestured around to the slain Vahzilok, feeling it superfluous to note the Hellion in the hall behind him.

Despite his better judgement, Revelin was becoming quite accustomed to this creature. At the very least, it hadn't killed him, and at the most had even made a pact to protect him. While he wasn't certain if he could trust the beast, popular fiction stated that millenia year old, darkness covered pseudo-demons weren't exactly the most honorable bunch. Nonetheless, he would follow along with this pact. After all, it was the best option, at the time.

"I'm not so sure now. I've already made the boy mad enough with my chatter, if I say anything else, he'll probably torture me again. The pain feels good every once in a while after feeling a lot of nothing, but a couple bits of it here and there are good enough for me."

Blake looked around the street, seeing nothing but green haze. And when he tried to look at the rooftops, he couldn't tell much of anything, really. He shrugged and said "I don't know. I was never really good at that stuff. My sixth-sense isn't very good."

The teen kept walking along, looking at all the buildings he passed until he stopped suddenly. "Here!" he shouted, his voice loud from the excitement of finally reaching his sister. He walked up the stone steps and opened the front door, which lead to a long hallway inside. "Come on," Blake motioned to He Who Lies, leaving it up to the man whether or not to shut the door.

Blake walked down the long hallway until he reached the door on the opposite end which lead to a flight of stairs. Instead of opening that door, he banged on the one to it's right. "Candice!" he shouted, knocking a few times. "Candice, it's Blake. Open up!" There was no answer, so Blake patted his jean pockets, then reached into his left and pulled out a key.

Opening the door after fiddling with it for a few tense moments, he looked around and saw no one at first after a quick glance before seeing the lump on the couch covered by a blanket. Blake rushed in and threw the blanket onto the floor, revealing Candice, unconcious.

She, like Blake, had dark black hair, except her' was much more neat than his. She had a long-sleeved green shirt on and a pair of jeans. The TV was blaring some comedy show filmed somewhere in California. In case He Who Lies wanted to look around (he probably shouldn't, but supers these days), the small kitchen was to the left with no door, like it was attatched to the living room. A door straight ahead lead to the bathroom, and the two doors on the right were bedrooms, Blake's and Candice's respectively.

"Help her," Blake said, his eyes pleading more than his words "Please."

((Bah, some of the coloring got messed up at the top. Sorry.))

'great I saved a woman with a Lois lane syndrome' he thought as he looked at her just imagining ways she could get in trouble so she could be rescued by her chosen hero. Somehow it turned out to be him.

"Alright tell me about this voices do they talk to you? Are they always the same or are the different voices each time?" This is Paragon after all there are telepaths and such. Hopefully she's a new telepath and not someone being manipulated or worst possessed by a demon.

He blinked and thought he saw a robot on another roof in the distance but was to far away to be sure. "This is a bit more then just some thugs on the street lets get inside. Some mind manipulation powers need line of sight." Yeah cover the bases he went to the fire escape and went down one level and looked at the window.

Using his own mental powers he tried to unlock the window. The result however was the shattering explosion of the window. "Damn to much power... No help for it be careful of the glass as you get inside Xi"

He Who Lies acted quickly, tearing off Candice's right sleeve to expose her arm. He rummaged around in his robes and pulled out a sealed ink-pot and a very finely-tipped brush. With smooth and controlled strokes, he started to draw a small sigil on her shoulder. An image began to appear. It was an hourglass, and the top bulb had fragmented, letting the contents spill out of it entirely rather than drop into the bottom bulb. A coiled snake's tail led away to link and turn into the head of a woman with no face. A series of small illegible scribbles. Once He Who Lies was finished, the entire ink-pot had been drained, and the man suddenly looked fatigued.

"That...Should do it..." He said, breathing heavily. "That should make her resistant to most poisons. With the amount she's already inhaled, her body should start synthesizing an antibody with the help of that. I predict she will awaken in less than five hours."

They told me of their arrogance, they told me of their fear, they told me of their cowardice, and then they told me of The End. None knew about the crumbled leaves of plague upon the wind."

"Thank you," Blake said without looking away from his sister. "Really, thank you." Blake stood up and exhaled deeply, the sound could be heard even from behind his hood. His eyes lingered on his sister for a moment longer before he turned to He Who Lies and noticed how tired and worn he looked. "Are you okay?" he asked, noticing the heavy breaths the man took. "If you want, I can get you something to drink. If it would still be safe."

"Water, soda, I think I still have some beer. Do you want something?" Blake paused, then asked "Or are we supposed to leave the Row?"

((I apologize for not posting sooner / for the ****** post quality yesterday - I was studying for the A+ Cert Exam.))

'I understand. There's little we can do to prevent what already happened. Could you please elaborate more upon the torturing you bit? I'm intrigued.'

Ri sat idly in an office chair overlooking the scene below. He wasn't aware if he should advance now, or simply wait and observe. Slowly he stroked the cherry wood that made up the arm rests, occasionally stopping only to trace back over the elegant designs that were stained into the wood. He wondered who might have sat in this chair before this gas. Perhaps he would never know.

Ri was a man without a childhood, without parents, without memories, he simply existed and always did to his knowledge. All his existence, he paced back and forth inside a mental prison of sorts, each day smiling outward to the world in a welcoming manner only to be shut in longer, only to be accused of some heinous crime. Perhaps he really was guilty deep down? Perhaps he was a monster who blocked out his traumatic childhood, abusive parents, and lack of memories and replaced them with the innocence of youth. The world would never know.

----

"Honestly, and I hate to admit this, two tanks and a barrel full of hell-monkeys aren't going to stop him from finding his sister." The words echoed in her mind endlessly as if searching for some lost memory. Her eyes rolled back into her head as if she were becoming epileptic. However, all signs of life stopped for a few agonizing seconds after this strange event.

"I'm not so sure now. I've already made the boy mad enough with my chatter, if I say anything else, he'll probably torture me again. The pain feels good every once in a while after feeling a lot of nothing, but a couple bits of it here and there are good enough for me." Xi was slowly becoming something not herself, not the young adult Dreg has rescued and rather something that spoke only to speak and nothing more.

She suddenly snapped out of it and simply stared at Dreg. "Something wrong?" Not getting a response she answered the questions Dreg has poised moments before.

"They kind of hit me in waves. I'll be sitting here... and I want to stop but I can't. It's like I forgot how to stop. They're always different... there are two that I have always had. They're named Richard and Tilford."

She seemed to jump at the mention of mind manipulators. "Tilford and Richard always warned me about mind manipulators and how dangerous they were. Do you think that there really is one that's using me? Do you think Richard and Tilford are really mind manipulators?"

All the while, she obediently followed, hanging on to his each and every word no matter how small.

"Sure..." the voice answered, sounding slightly cautious and confused. "He says my real name with a certain intent in mind and I get something that feels like a fire is burning inside and throughout my body. It isn't really my body, mind you, but the feeling is the same. How the boy found out what my real name is, by Judge I have no idea. But, whenever I tick him off enough, he says it, and slam, there it is.

"The worst part is the fire. Me, fire doesn't usually hurt me. Or effect me, really. It's as much as a part of my body as my tail is. But yet, when that stupid boy says it, it runs through me like holy water, burning my insides. Quite annoying, really."

He looked around the appartment making sure it was empty as he thought to himself. 'What the heck did I get myself into?' but at the same time he didn't want to just abandoned Ki.

After his search he came to the living room. "Alright I got an idea but it's risky. Seems my mental powers are a bit strong so we have to do this the old way." He moved two seats so they face each other and sat down in one of them. "Alright sit down, take my hands, and close your eyes. Then I want you to relax listening to the sounds around you the rhythm of your heart beat."

"I don't think your sister is in any condition to be moved right now, even with my help." He Who Lies said. "That, and if we got in a fight...She'd just be a dead weight, unconcious as she is. Plus, I'm pretty drained right now. Maybe we should just stay put until she wakes up."
