Shield/DM, opinions needed!

DSorrow

So I've got a shield/DM tank at 38 and I'm thinking of starting to get some sets on him. Thing is, I want a "final build" sorted out first so I can concentrate on sets that will be of use for the final build as well.

For this build I mainly went for soft cap along with regen. I'm not sure if getting regen was a good choice (I usually do that with my characters) because I have Siphon Life in my attack chain. It might just be a better idea to go for recharge instead.

Also, should I drop the Miracle: +Recovery from the build? Seeing as it costs quite a bit and I have Dark Consumption. If I went for more global recharge I'd also have it up more often.

About OWTS, I skipped it because I am at the soft cap and have quite nice resists on top of that. I have completed ITF/LGTF with my ice tank who has no resistance but is soft capped. With a self heal in my attack chain I really doubt I'm going to need demi-godmode. With Phalanx Fighting should be somewhere around 48% Defense which will hopefully be enough to cut the effects of first Defense DeBuffs that hit me.

My attack chain on the tank is probably going to be something along the lines of MG > Smite > SL > Smite filled with Shadow Punch where needed. Shadow Maul is there for situations where I want to clear a lot of people at once and it is very easy to get it hit 3-5 people if I herd around a corner or something. Having at least one AoE on a character is a must for me. Shield Charge doesn't quite cut it alone because of its long recharge.

Any general opinions on the build, slotting or set bonus goals are appreciated!

Well, I was expecting a bit more opinions than this...

I don't believe in perfect builds so I'd like at least some opinions on whether I should go for regen or recharge.

It depends what you want DSorrow, if you're in for soloing AVs, of which Shield/DM is possible then recharge is your way to go - and I would probably do that myself.

Regarding regen, I think it would mesh nicely with the fact that you're not getting hit so will notice your high regen rates when you do get hit but I can't say how valid it would be as I've never tried this approach myself.

All in all, I would say go for recharge, plus you'll have Soul Drain and Shield Charge up more often

Hope that helps,

Tux

Usually I'd of been about a bit more. I think you can afford to lower your defenses for other stuff but I guess some -def maybe thought about or something.

What you could do is fit globals in sooner.Throw things about and a slot could end up being free anyway.

I was thinking I might try that at some point. What kind of recharge is needed (per power) to run a MG > Smite > SL > Smite attack chain?

The regen is basically what I do in most builds. This build is just different in the way, that I have a 270hp heal in my attack chain which alone counts for quite a bit of regen. This is the main reason why I did think of swapping some of the regen for recharge.

That's because the build I exported doesn't have phalanx fighting on. The numbers showing up in Mids are 5% lower than they should be. Phalanx fighting with no people near me offers that 5%, but Mids is only able to show the values for 1-3 people in melee instead of 0-3.

Well I'd say you're exactly right there, so building for some recharge is definitely your way to go! However I apologize as I'm not sure on the numbers that are needed for global recharge to get your particular attack chain up and running. Having a look around the Scrapper/Tanker US forums might help there.

True. I'm thinking I might try for about 50-60% global rech and see where it gets me. It's not too difficult to work out the recharge needed on my own, just wasted effort if the information already exists.

requires a truckload of recharge
was going to suggest smite, fireblast,mg,smite, fireblast,sl but mids is lying about the fireblast damage it seems.

How much recharge per attack would that attack chain require?

Right then, here's a slightly reworked build.

The attack chain isn't quite MG > Smite > SL > Smite, but close enough I believe. It will need some filling with Shadow Punch which I might have to slot it in another way to contribute more into damage output.

In general I dropped some of the regen intentionally (Regen Tissue unique) and added to recharge (more LotG).

What do you guys think?

should be about 139% in MG

Posted

139% with Mid's numbers or Arcanatime incorporated?

I was thinking, though, that with the build I posted I could run an attack chain of MG > Smite > SP > SL > Smite or something like that. I have a Resistance IO in True Grit which I could remove and use the slot to get an additional Damage IO in Shadow Punch to make it a more worthwhile attack.

What do you think of that?

I'd love to be able to have Fire Blast and Fireball in the build, but as usual, it is quite a tight build with the primary set being Shield Defense...

Recharge Buff (needed) = (Base Recharge Time - Final Recharge Time) / Final Recharge Time

Posted

But the actual recharge time needed differs a bit if you use the ingame numbers which are wrong because of server ticks. Arcanatime "fixes" this problem and gives the real value of recharge needed.

Looking at your build and from it assuming obvious intentions there isn't much you can change but I would of put the res/def in true grit if possible and personally swapped out leap pool for speed. Haste may crash 15 eps but its worth the combat jump endurance cost over time roughly plus with greater aoe output over time its worth the cost to me anyway.

??? This formula acually works. I´m fully aware of what arcanatime is.

Here's a slightly altered build. Right now I'm left with only one problem: should I drop Taunt in order to get Hasten? I'm a bit worried about how it would work out in teams because Shield is no Ice Armor and I don't have a spammable AoE...

Anyways, here's the build:

Is it for duel pvp or something? Whats with so much leap pool love? I dunno, I don't think you need leap pool to softcap and so can haste ss yaself and keep taunt.

If you remove taunt you will become limited in what you can do for a team that's not one of them specced ones. With taunt you can slot and build to tank anything, for any team, as any type of tank, one way or another. Its a power that all tanks can get and is one that you can balance all types of tanks around using some team dynamic noddle.

Nah. It's no way for PvP, leaping just happens to be my travel pool of choice. I pick it on nearly all of my toons because it's fast and offers great vertical travel. Besides, Hurdle + CJ is awesome for combat maneuvering.

That was what I was thinking of. I even picked Taunt on my Ice/SS who has 2 AoEs and both of the taunt auras. Guess I'll just have to live without hasten and fill in my attack chain with Shadow Punch.

If we only were able to choose between the two first powers of our secondary sets... *sigh*

I think although I would need to work it out proper that, I have increased DPS and compensated in terms of DPE to make up for the lesser DPA between boxing and smite. Proper attack chain analysis would be required to find out if its true or otherwise I destroyed ya build XD.

iirc from werner's threads us side, to run the smite -> SL ->MnG attack chain you need near perma hasten levels of global recharge plus a fair bit in the powers due to the above mentioned arcanetime.

I have perma hasten on my DM/SR scrapper but still can't 100% run smite -> sl -> mng attack chain due to touch of death only giving 50ish recharge in smite.

Going from my suggestion for DSorrows build its doable still soft capping def but I think a power has to be lost somewhere and replaced with smite. That power could be Grant Cover.

I did think of skipping Grant Cover, the thing just is that it gives quite a nice bit of Def Debuff Resistance.
