Hi, im new to the game, and decided to choose dominator to start with.

The thing is im not sure what the differences are with all the power sets. I keep hearing peoples saying one powerset is better for some things than others. I also dont know how one affects the other in terms of the control and assault sets. Maybe give me some ideas of good mixes?

So far ive chosen gravity with fire assault, is that any good? I chose it for asthetics only, so i dont know if its a useful spec.
I have been wondering to try fire with fire, but is it better to mix them?

Any help or advice would be great, but please could you not use CoX abbreviations, I am new and havnt learnt the lingo yet :P.

Thanks

I wouldn't recommend Gravity for a first timer, it is not the easiest set to play.

Plant and Earth make much easier sets to start with. Plant gets Seeds of Confusion, and Earth gets a bucket load of control options. (Although, avoid the area immobilizes, they will just get you in trouble until you know what you're doing)

Firey Assault is ok, it offers alot of damage, but is ranged focused. Electical Assault offers a more single target/melee focused roll (Dominators tend do more damage in melee). Icy Assault offers a balance between the two, but tends to cost more endurance.

For a MUCH more detailed overview of all the powers check out this guide.

After recent convos ingame and my assorted mad rantings about the joyous power of gravity, I came up with this spec. This is a comparitively cheap spec and is not a permadom spec. Instead this is a spec that is optimised numerically instead, grabbing handy buffs as and where.

Also you'll note the kismet on Scorpion Shield as I went mace mastery based upon what we chatted about. This means your shield isnt amazing, so it has been used to gain that +tohit buff giving almost the equivalent roughly of a micro-tactics meaning no need for leaderships like mine has. Also 17% more global dmg means no need for something like assault. With fiery embrace ontop you attacks will do superb dmg.

Given fire's only got 1 real melee, and you will prob play like me and spend most of the time in the air lording over sky-based combat. So the spec is tailored to remain at range but be able to mez a room. Ontop of this, you gain the extra pet from mace, as well as the ranged debuff attack. This means ya char does smash, fire, energy, toxic and lethal dmg overall. Good mix, coupled with some debuffing ability, strong shielding with PFF as ya panic button, very high dmg and increibly strong mez mean this char overall will be tremendously balanced.

Given that this spec very much does not run along regular IO designs, many would prob claim this to be not very strong. This spec was made using my own benchmark dominator as the template so once learnt you will debateably be even stronger and be more than capable of perma-holding an AV on your own. With skill and practice you can even solo hold Monsters and GMs, but thats way down the line.

Oh and of course, theres a few special shiny things to make it extra nice and a pair of purple very rare pet IOs on singy - trust me its worth it

Enjoy and I hope you get the joyous experience I had leveling my very first char, The Starscreamer himself, my gravity/thorns/soul dom

I wouldn't agree 100% with that but i guess it does depend on what sets your playing.
I do have stone cages on both my dom and controller as stallagmites and stone cages is a great opener also its -KB so if you have KB powers its good for stopping you from knocking mobs out of your AOE holds etc.
Also on my controller its a good source of damage if its loaded with procs and you can spam it quite abit.

Grav Crush loaded with damage and damage procs is just a joy to spam

I'd agree with Paj in saying Gravity for a Dom mightn't be the best first-time choice.

I had an Earth/Fire Dom US side for a while and it was fun. Lots of AOE Control, good damage.

Plant is very good on a Domi though, Seeds is a godly power.

AOE Immobs can be very useful (and Plants does twice the damage of the others, for some reason), Fire, Gravity & Earth can combine them with their AOE Stuns for a ghetto hold (stunned, wandering enemies can be slightly annoying). Obviously with Ice or Earth hold off on the AOE immob if you're Ice Patching / Earthquaking.

Overzealous use of AOE Immobs at the low levels (either side) will get you killed through aggro though.

Crushing Field? Yes, it's great once you've a few PROCs in there, I think I'm up to 3 or 4 in it at the mo (I'd slot for Acc & End over more damage though as AOE Immobs can burn through the blue if you're spamming)
