Porting the game to a new PC - advice, anyone?

My old pooter has finally slammed the door and walked out on me in a huff, and next week I move in the new one. I'm currently arguing with a Radeon X1550 card in a 3ghz machine running XP. It's been fine until recently, when the CoH graphics seemed to get too hot to handle... The new machine is running Vista 64 Home Premium with (and I quote) NVidia 9400GT 1GB PCI Express DDR2 graphics card.

My question is: how would you go about porting your CoH game from one to the other? Is it as simple as dragging and dropping the folder onto a DVD, then dragging and dropping them back into the new directory on the new machine after installing from the ancient old disk?

Please bear in mind that I just search computers in abandoned warehouses whilst looking for Crey secrets... IT Skills were not included in the M.A.G.I. training and acclimatisation courses...

Not entirely certain you even need to reinstall from the original discs. When I did it, if my memory is working right, all I had to do was copy the game folder, plunk it into place on the new hard drive, and run the updater to get it working. Needed to point it to where the copied folder was so it could find the .piggs and whatnot for checking, but it worked.

Nodoubt someone smarter will be along soon to correct me in great detail though.

whenever I've copied over I've only copied the files across. There's no installer per se, so you should be ok. However I've only gone from one version of XP to another, so whether adding Vista into the equation causes probs is anyone's guess.

Good luck

The game runs entirely within it's own folder so no registry editing is required. Copy the files onto a DVD, put them on the new PC in the same place and make a new shortcut to the updater. Run it, it'll check the files then you should be good to go.

Thanks everyone!

I love the way people here are so free with their help! If I had a virtual cake I'd give you all a virtual slice

Well as far as i was aware... when it comes to a Mac the app folder holds everything to do with the program (unless otherwise stated, eg shared info)So it would just be a matter of drag and drop. Pc however tends not to, the good news though is that generally the information thats not been written in will be added when you try to run the game. ...hopefully.

Just remember that when you move the folder and run the updater, it will prompt on where to install.
It will append the "City of Heroes" itself.
so if you placed it in c:\games\City of Heroes
point the updater to c:\games\

^ That

Just moved from XP to Vista 64 Home Premium myself, and no problems at all with the move.

For some reason the updater shortcut did seem to be prone to changing itself to the US version a few times (just keep an eye out and be ready to change it back!), but after the first week it gave up and stuck with the EU link.

How odd. But from what I've heard in the past about possible occasional problems with Vista and NVidia, if that's the worst that happens I'll be happy!

Thanks again, folks! Karma is in the mail

Or not as it never does this for me.
