Proof Reading & Optional Testing

Greetings Maddicts (Geddit? :P)

I've been having a series of long chats with some ingame friends of mine, whose native language is not English. They are neither French or German. They are members of a long standing group of CoX players whose mother tongue may be Spanish, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish, and so on...they don't have a server to call their own

What has occurred to them, is that, regardless of their creativity, their arcs appear to be seriously hampered, due to the 'authenticity' or their English. In addition, they feel they need to publish it in English, for fear of it never being played. This I feel, is a tragic shame.

I offered to proof read a friend's arc, and since, he has been receiving *much* better votes (solid 4s and 5s), without changing any of the content itself.

This has led me to the following:

I would be willing to proof read any arcs sent to me in the following format.

-A PM on these boards
-A PM on these boards asking for an e-mail to send the file, or a copy paste of the file to
-A Global tell ingame, with the ARC ID (this would, however, be the most tedious and inefficient)

In addition to this, if people so desired, I would also like to offer Solo testing (on my Ice/cold corr), for general feel, story, fun, and most importantly, balance.

If I feel it deserves a 5 or 4 star, I shall rate it so. If I feel it does not, I shall not rate it down, but instead suggest how I feel it could be improved, in a lengthy tell or PM on these boards.

I hope some people in the non-English communities can find some use in this, and I relish the opportunity to help (I have been really having fun playing arcs given to me on the Mission Architect channel).

(NB: I am a 2nd year German Student at University, and this sort of thing is both part of my degree (how the "English' of translation sounds to a certain register), and good practice)

Regards,
Xem

This is great, but I also think that we shouldn't be afraid to publish arcs in our native languages. I would definitely play arcs in Swedish. Not to mention, it would be a really awesome way to practice a language you're learning.

If it weren't for that unfortunate 3 mission limit, I would have done all my arcs in both Swedish and English.

I would be concerned that since the GM's are unlikely to be able to read such arcs that the work may get canned as they can't guarantee it isn't offensive or breaching copyright.

Just a thought.

Oh really? That's too bad.

Can't they rely on the non-English players to report inappropriate content?

Xemulas, thats a great offer. I know how much my arcs has been improved by several someone patiently telling me what was wrong with it language wise. I will gladly take you up on that offer when I got a new arc idea. In fact I am thinking about improving my current arcs a bit but I am afraid to end up with all sorts of English errors. So yes I would appreciate help there.

Of course, don't hesitate to warn me if errors still exist in my current arcs. Because no matter how much mistakes I removed, new ones seem to pop up every time someone plays it. Must be a Nemesis plot i tell you

Thanks Avatea and Xemulas. Even my arc is far from complete, still trying to arrange custom group for it, i think i will require your assistance in future, Xemulas.

Also if anyone need a tester for their arcs, even non-published ones or a filler to test their custom mobs give me a shout from my global; @Knightly. Currently available on Defiant Heroes/Villians and Union Heroes.

Awesome offer! Then again, you are always ready to help, which is awesomer!

On a sidenote: Could you proofread mine when you're playing it? You have the ID on a little paper next to your keyboard

Xem, you're a star - I doubt I've said that enough, recently. Not that I'll need to take you up on this awesome offer, being a native English speaker, but that's a phenomenal offer.

Proof once again that CoH's community is full of awesome.

The wisdom of Shadowe: Ghostraptor: The Shadowe is wise ...; FFM: Shadowe is no longer wise. ; Techbot_Alpha: Also, what Shadowe said. It seems he is still somewhat wise ; Bull Throttle: Shadowe was unwise in this instance...; Rock_Powerfist: in this instance Shadowe is wise.; Techbot_Alpha: Shadowe is very wise *nods*; Zortel: *Quotable line about Shadowe being wise goes here.*

Thanks for the support everyone, I'm glad this has been well received

I've already had one e-mail, and completed 2 of the 3 arcs submitted in both proof-reading and testing. Things seem to be working pretty well.

@DrGonzo, sure, i'll get to it when I can

@GrinningSpade, don't hesitate to send me a message, i'd be happy to help!

@Knightly, I look forward to it!

I'm happy to take on as many as i'm sent, so long as i'm not expected to do them all the day they're submitted

Once again, thanks for the support

Update:

I'm currently suspending this service, as of Monday the 28th September.

I will be out of the country and without the internet for up to 9 months. Once I return, I'll hopefully be in a position to offer this again.

Regards and Apologies,
Sam

I created an arc I wish to be tested and read, it is called "Down with the Sickness", and I don't know if this matters, but I posted it on Freedom server. I like to think it was well written, if not, please tell me. Thanks!
