Damage resistance caps
1)Cap is 90% for Dam Res on a tank
2)Total for the build
3) Click on the combat attributes tab in game. As an inv only S&L will get to the cap (it is possible to cap it with tough as well) Invincible gives defence not resistance which is whether or not the cap hits you. The soft cap is 45% and I think the hard cap is 200% (not 100% sure on that). It is possible to get to 45% on invul with 1 in melee I think but it takes a lot of set work. 200% you wont get without serious outside help

I know (think I know) that Hard Caps are "the game/devs wont let you take this any higher" and Soft Caps are "the available bufferage wont go any higher but in theory you could".

No, soft caps are "you can make this as high as you like, but it won't make any difference really." Best example is Defense. You can have as much defense as you like (I think there may be a real upper limit, but it's not really viable to hit it), but once you've taken someone's chance of hitting you down to 5%, more Defense won't help. They always have that 1-in-20 chance of getting a hit.

1) What are the hards and soft caps for damage resistance?
[/ QUOTE ]
Resistance is hard capped at 90% for Tanks (Source). I believe going a bit higher means if you get debuffed, you may still make the cap, but having more than 90% won't make a difference to the damage taken.

2) Is that "per power" or total on your toon?
[/ QUOTE ]
It's per damage type. I.e. You can have 90% resistance to slashing damage, 90% resistance to fire damage, etc.

3) How can I see what my combined dam res total is (i.e. all my powers + say 4 mobs around me and I have Invincible running = What?)
[/ QUOTE ]
Your current resistances at any given time can be seen on the Power Attributes window, under Resistances. You get to it via the Powers window.
If you want to know what you'll get for a given number of enemies, without finding that many and checking the window, you'll need to do the maths, or get something like Mid's Character Planner, see here.

1) Hard cap for tankers is 90%. There is no resistance soft cap due to the way resistance works. Although you could debate whether it is actually worthwhile to go from 85% res to 90% for instance, but that's another story...
2) Combined on your toon. You can have one power giving you 90% resistance or 9 powers giving you 10% resistance each.
3) Combat attributes. Open your Powers tab, then in the upper left corner of the popup window you should see Combat Attributes. Click it and open the resistance tab.
Also as a nitpick add, Invincibility adds to your defense, not resistance.

To clarify: that is per damage type.
Using a couple of powers and an insp, my main can cap out lethal/smashing/psionics resistance (at 75%, she's a scrapper).

[/ QUOTE ]You'd reduce incoming damage by one third. Very worth it.
Generally, the more you have of an attribute, the better returns you get from gaining an even further bonus to it, until hitting the cap. Going from 40% defense to 45% defense cuts hits taken in half compared to the 40%, for example.
Thank you very much for all your help guys.
The Inv blunder was a "Doh!" moment.
One last question: Am I right in thinking that Dam Res resists all incoming damage (of the relevant type i.e. smathing/lethal or Neg Eng say) after debuffs or are there powers that ignore Dam Res?
There are a few powers in the game that do Untyped damage. All self-damage abilities such as Oppressive gloom and Energy Transfer do this, I think - not sure if any actual enemies do. Falling does, too.
There's also Electrolytic damage, which is only done by the Hamidon, and which can only be resisted by consuming an Essence of the Earth inspiration, which can only be acquired by defeating Devouring Earth Monsters.
The crystal titan does a type of damage only resisted by ambrosia too

Ok...
I admit it.....
I haven't a scoobie how this works.
I know (think I know) that Hard Caps are "the game/devs wont let you take this any higher" and Soft Caps are "the available bufferage wont go any higher but in theory you could".
Basically while I want to max my Inv tank's Dam res I'd a) like to know what I am achieving and b) don't want to waste slots/expensive IO sets if it's already capped out.
So I have some questions.
1) What are the hards and soft caps for damage resistance?
2) Is that "per power" or total on your toon?
3) How can I see what my combined dam res total is (i.e. all my powers + say 4 mobs around me and I have Invincible running = What?)
Yours cluelessly.
