Melee defense

How does it work?

Is it attacks made by melee attacks (which I kind of assume) like swords slashes and punches.
Or are it attacks made at close range (even those point blank sniper shots).

If you have nothing useful to say, you have two choices: Say something useless or stay quiet.

It's against attacks that have the "melee attack" flag set.

Most attacks are classed as either Melee, Range or AoE.

I really should do something about this signature.

The only type of attack that needs a seperate set of defense is Psi, all other attacks are considered to have a component of one of the above (Ranged-Lethal, Melee-Energy etc.) whereas Psi is often just listed as Psi...no melee, ranged or AoE component.

The system will use whatever your highest defense is against an attack so if you had higher Energy defense (40% lets say) than Ranged Defense (25% for examples sake) but were attacked by a Ranged Energy attack, the system would apply your 40% Energy defense to it and not the 25% Ranged defense. If the attack was of a damage type which you didn't have any specialised defense then only the 25% Ranged defense would be applied to it.

Not true for all psi tho. So far only arachnos seem to have "untyped" psi attacks. I have/had no problems with Rikti, Carnival of shadows or lost.

[/ QUOTE ]Some players, too. It depends on the specific power in question. Dominate, for example, is typed, but not positional.

Another thing to keep in mind that there is no Typed defense for Toxic attacks, only Positional works.

Not acording to the mids'. Psi attacks from mind and psychic sets all have positions.

Combat stats give no positional for Psi Assault - at least for Doms - the power description says ranged but the detailed stats don't.
Mind Control however all have positional tags.

[/ QUOTE ]Dominate doesn't. At least the Fortunata version, can't remember others.

Thorn Assualt has Thorn Barage which is positional type Close and as its toxic that combination makes it particularly effective.

Don't forget also Mids isn't official although bugs in it are fixed quickly when they are reported.
