CoX drawings by Darth Delicious
Looking good DD.
I do have some con/crit for you though. |
The two little pink triangles in the inner corner of the eye (called the Plica semilunaris and the Lacrimal caruncle... yes they are really called that and no obviously I was not consulted ) are there for the camera left eye but are missing from the right eye (in both of your images).
|
The interior detailing on the iris looks real nice but it should extend almost to the outer edge... i.e. you shouldn't have such a thick green border around it.
|
The white circular highlight you have is too dim if the sunglasses are missing (since the eye is always wet this should be a bright white on the naked eye) and if you are going to keep the sunglasses on and the dim highlight is a result of the light passing through the glasses then you need two white lens flares on the sunglasses to show this as well.
|
The eyelashes are too uniformly spaced. Left as is it's a visual cue that tells the viewer he should be looking straight on at the face while the rest of the visual cues say the face is turned thus creating conflict and an image that doesn't "read" right.
The lashes above need to be thicker at the base (shouldn't see skin) and thinner towards the tips. The lashes under the eye need to be shorter thinner and much further apart and there should be a lot less of them (clear gaps separating the individual lashes going toward the inner eye). |
Thanks CR!

In the mean time, FArt is continuing (don't forget to vote!) I suddenly felt inspired to start working on the next month theme "anonymous".
Like wished by many.... Mynx will be in it!

Hey DD, I really like how you approached your fanart entry for this month. Using hard edges to define form is actually a very good exercise, and much harder than roughly suggesting it with a soft airbrush. I struggle with it enough in just black and white, but you pulled it off very nicely in color! I think some of the patterns on the rocks could be consolidated into bigger shapes to be less distracting (my drawing teacher used to say "don't make little islands!" when doing this type of value exercises) but I think the figure looks great.
I should be more clear, as I don't want to give the wrong idea... it's fine to be able to see skin (or the sky in the
background for that matter) in between the individual strands but it shouldn't be for the whole length of the strand. Even hair with a ton of flyaways can work (especially if it's windy) but where the hair comes from the head should still have clumps and look like a solid mass and as it gets out towards the tips it can be more scattered and windblown. Think more like this... |

I've known her from CGtalk since when I got into digital painting, and she was actually one of my classmates in Robert Chang's workshop I took last year. Apparently that workshop has been very popular and Robert has already run it 4 or 5 times, and there's a new class starting in a few days. Anyways, I love Del's style, and have always been amazed by the richness of skintones in her paintings.

Hi LD! Thanks! It's not my usual style..but I just wanted to do something different.
Oddly I can't seem to do it again *giggles*. I try, but keep ending up in my own style.
I'll just keep trying .
Bigger shapes to attrack less attention... *makes note* Good one!
Ooh yes.. I've been wondering who was behind that gorgeous hair! Thanks for pointing that out!
That truly is gorgeous! I have no other word for it! *goes to put ceruleanvii to her watchlist*

......When I saw that img I imediately thought it could be something Del did, and I was right!

I've been a fan of Del's for a long time now, love the way she uses color and light especially as they interact with skin.

Dang LD!!! I wish I had the cheddar to take his class! Would you say it was an invaluable investment? I've always loved that D'artiste cover of his...
LJ, my short answer is a resounding yes. For long answer, simply take a look under "what you'll learn" on the course page and read the testimonials. Robert may not be the most technically talented digital painter out there, but he sure does have a wealth of knowledge to pass on in every aspect of creating an image, a lot of which many students never even thought of, including myself.
What I was equally impressed with was his dedication to the students and his passion to make us get the most out of the class. He put so much into going over the assignments of each student that we learned a lot just by reading his comments on other students homework. And he'd answer every question asked so thoroughly sometimes we felt bad we were taking so much of his time, but he was totally cool with it.
When I was applying to a 3d animation school months after the workshop was over, I emailed him to ask if he could write a recommendation letter for me. He didn't simply say yes, but for the next couple of nights we exchanged emails discussing if that's really what I want to do. He had a couple of concerns and it was only after I was aware of and understood them before he wrote the letter for me.
If you could afford it and had the time to the assignments and participate I'd say definitely go for it. He said after the new class it might be a few months to a year before it is offered again, since he repeated it like nonstop after the first one and almost everyone who was going to take the class has done it by now.
Sorry DD, didn't mean to threadjack. If you want to push further with that style, there is an easy way to prepare any image to study, but it doesn't seem to work well with color. In Photoshop, first go to Image -> Mode -> Grayscale. Discard color information then Image -> Adjustments -> Posterize. For the purpose of doing exercises, set the number of levels between 2-5. The real challenge comes in not copying what photoshop does exactly, but making changes as you see fit to make the shapes look aesthetically pleasing. Hmm, I remembered that you use Paint Shop Pro...hopefully it has a filter that does the same thing too...

No worries LD!
But I won't be using that style again for F-Art again...as it apears not to be in the liking much. Or it's just the voters who can't handle a bare-chested Statesman *giggles* (I really thought I'd do alright this month... ).
Though I'll just use it for me, because it's fun .
*now goes off to a zoo with a friend and will continue her entrance for F-Art May after that, because she can really use the early bird points!*

I don't think there was anything wrong with your choice of style DD,
just some really stiff competition this time from Lousy (and now Liz too).
Also the last two months I haven't updated the notice threads (I think someone not participating in the
contest should be doing this) reminding people from other parts of the forums to come
and vote so we've had a lower turnout and less votes to go around.
Agreed, nothing wrong with style at all and some very tough competition...
If there was any "issue" at all with the piece for me personally it was that it didn't scream CoH... At first look I missed it was a CoH piece altogether, then when I saw it was Statesman I gave a secong look and the design on bag and such became apparent. It's tough, what with the theme being Off Duty, but I personally still want to see an immediate and obvious CoH hook... Be it costume pieces, backgrounds, whatever...

Think about it this way... if that bag were missing and it wasn't a piece you painted but rather something you were seeing now for the first time, would you know that it was Statesman on vacation?
Some things that might've helped... on that rock just to the right of Statesman could have been resting his red cape, his boots could've been leaning against the rocks, in his hand, as he's looking down at it, could've been his iconic metal half helm/faceplate facing back up at him (suggesting that even though he is on vacation his "job" is never far from his mind). Spilling out of the bag could've been a beach towel with the Freedom Phalanx logo on it, on his shorts could've been a single large white star etc. etc.
Your chosen concept, how you portray that month's theme, what style you choose, the way you tie it in to Coh... these can all be factors in addition to the quality of the work.
Spend some time thinking about them and I think you may do better going forward.
Cheers.
Points taken. Thanks for the feedback guys!

*looks at her folder of drawings she started and looks worried*
I really have to start forcing myself to finish a drawing before starting a new one...
Now I have several pieces with deadlines and even more without!
I still have Johnny Depp unfinished...struggling with his clothing tbh.
And Mike's portrait I started a loooong time ago.... and I've started working on a Sister Psyche piece and yesterday to a piece about my own char Darth Delicious, then I have another random portrait unfinished and another doodle....not to mention F-Art, Shikome's request and a project I promised my sister to do!
But luckily I did finish my first (though non-CoH related) commission!

Boy do I know that feeling. Anything you need help with?
I'm in the same boat, I've got like ten things I want to be drawing and at least six designs in various stages of completion
but lately it seems I've barely the time to work on one on any given day. Just need to prioritize I guess
and take lots of little breaks so you don't get burnt out on any one project.
Speaking of gaming breaks you should have 11 new servers in your list now.
This appears to be a new manifestation of altitis. Dear me someone should call the CDC.
Roxy On DA...Finally!

@CR: I know!!! How awesome is that!!!... well... not counting the fact that my trial account is blocking me for using my own name on some servers *pouts*.
And I sent you a PM about it a few days back too . Mostly about where to go now *giggles*. So many choices!!
Still some lag going on here and there, but I'm sure that will be fixed in no-time.

DD, if it's your own trial account, with the same user info on each, you might try calling/messaging Customer Service about it. Not sure they'll do anything, but it's worth a try.
Be Well!
Fireheart
Why didn't I think of that! *grins* I'll go do that, thanks Fireheart!

Perhaps when I get back tonight from the concert (Cake is in town ) I'll catch up
on some of the correspondence of the last day or two.
I get a lot of PM's sometimes... (yes that's nineteen hundred and eighty PM's and 9 new ones in the last 2 days...
and I just deleted a few hundred or so back around Christmas to make room)
Not to mention DA notes, emails, Skypes, etc etc.
However I was thinking ahead a bit and already answered your central question here a few weeks before you sent that PM.
All my main heroes are on Liberty (Chloe, Brahn, Xllusya, Vladric, Aruanna Twilight Moon, Simon, Shieldara etc)
but I also have some heroes on Virtue now and that seems to be where many of the 606 forumites play.
Oh my!
Hah, well you know what they say... With great art, comes loads of fanmail.... wait... .
I received a reply from the customer service and hopefully Darth Delicious as well as Mike Johnson will walk the Liberty server too soon!
They are already walking around on Virtue though .
But...I only have one char at lvl 50 ... and that is Mike.. on the Union server.
That's what you get with drawing more than you play! *giggles*

My new avatar is the other one I made.
I actually like how my photomanipulations turned out *giggles*.
Not bad for a first run, I suppose!

That's pretty cool DD.
I like the expression on the one of you with your hair down best and the hand position in the hair up shot.
They reminds me a little bit of One Starless Night (the idea more than the layout).
Thanks!
And indeed! I see what you mean!
But it was more that I had a picture of a little coloured light we have in the garden and I thought... what if... I would make that into a little magical light, floating above someone's hand.
But I didn't have any models to pose for me.. so I had to do it myself!
Then I put a few piccies together with these as result!
Though, I'd rather have a model for the piccies... as...well.. I don't like to wear make-up (so I didn't ) and taking off my glasses makes my slightly cross-eyed *giggles*
