Meaning of "Walks the Earth" badge title?

There are several meanings attributable to the phrase "Walks the Earth".

The most likely, from my perspective, of the meaning of that badge title is "One who travels throughout the world".

An alternative meaning is "Exists, in a tangible manner", though that is highly unlikely (that's the meaning about "When Gods walked the Earth", meaning that it was possible to actually meet said Gods/divinities).

A literal translation is going to fail. It is an ancient phrase more commonly used in reference to a time when walking was the only mode of transportation across land (I am classifying riding a horse, or in a carriage under this classification, because something is walking, even if it's a horse), but in a modern context the meaning has morphed (quite reasonably) to describe the ability to travel from one place to another, regardless of the mode of transport.

Interestingly, one would never say "I have walked the Earth" unless one had literally done so, on foot. However, when speaking in the past tense (or at least one of them - I can never get them all straight), an outside observer might say "He/She has walked the Earth" when describing someone who is widely travelled.

Yet another meaning is as a means of refering to the age of an individual - "He has walked the Earth for a thousand years" could be used to describe someone who is a thousand years old. It is an archaic formulation, but means exactly the same thing, and ties into the "Exists, in a tangible manner" meaning of the phrase.

Imagine a future in the CoH universe where there are no superheroes and people look back on these days and call them the times when "Gods walked the Earth".

And goddesses

The word "gods" can refer to all deities collectively, not just male ones.

[/ QUOTE ]

Which is about as acceptable as "guys" meaning everyone

[/ QUOTE ]

I believe the word your after is "Man" which works a bit like "God(s)" in that it can be in connection with either a female or a male entity.

No, she meant guys. In modern usage 'guys' can refer to a group of people, male or female (I worked in a place where my female team leader referred to the team which consisted of 6 girls and me as 'guys'), but you generally don't refer to a single woman as a 'guy'.

GG disapproves of calling a group of men and women guys, which she is entitled to do, I just disagree.

Ok Arctic Man got closest to this IMO.

To me this badge has always expemplified "Caine" - David Carradine's character in the TV series Kung Fu - a Chinese student of the martial art who set out on a journey to discover the world and himself at the same time. He lived a simple and noble existance (by 1970s TV standards anyhow) but the phrase was commonly used then I believe - it wasn't simply about travelling but also about the philosophy of the journey of life

Quite esoteric, distilled into a memento on an MMO

Because of people like you that see gender discrimination or inequality where there isn't any, like in this case.

Although Alanis singing someone out of existence was a pretty accurate representation of what happens at her gigs.

I'm with the Kung Fu theory on this one (clicky)...

...although it has nothing on the infinitely more subtle and ancient Lancastrian martial art of Akai-Thump...

Or maybe it exists to distinguish different functions in pan-theistic mythoi

After all, Gods and Goddesses are human constructs reflecting the societies they represent
