True, but most of the aoe's are quite short initial range. The psi aoe has a longer base range as do all it's single target attacks (bar the snipe).
So for a pure range point of view psi would be better.

I'm not dissing AR as I now have AR/EN @ lvl 27 and it's quite good fun.

If I'm not all wrong the blaster version of psi has the same base range as all the other blasts, 80 feet. Although I might've missed if you're talking about it compared to fire or ice blast which both have a 40 feet blast.

Not gonna say anything if psychic blast is 80ft or more.
But Ice and Fire are definatly 80ft aside Blaze and Bitter Ice Blast which are half that.

Another reason to go into melee as a Blaster is very powerful PBAoEs. Psychic Shockwave, Fire Sword Circle, Short Circuit, etc. Good and fast melee attacks, too. Energy Punch --> Bone Smasher, for instance, are fast and high-damage so fit into BU+Aim's 10 seconds well.

Having good damage also gives Blasters good survivability, I find. On a Fire/Mental, for instance, you can just hit BU+Aim then jump in with Drain Psyche and find yourself destroying all of your opposition faster than they can do the same to you.

The status of a 'squishy' is very easily avertable for short durations, also. Force of Nature, two tier-2 purples, Drain Psyche etc. And, being a Blaster, a short duration is most likely more time than you need to do your thing.
Edit: And, of course, breakfrees.

But that would be once u reach the final pool at 41. Only with a mez active i go melee, rikti, freak or lost bosses can do devastating melee hits. Melee is a choice, but in the time i can do a TF i can do more damage just trashing out some ranged powers.

And breakfree, tier1/2 nonstop firing often clears the job

(AR actualy wins on range, tier 1 is 90ft, tier 2 is 100ft, while all others are 80ft base).

OT but hey its my thread i'll go off topic if i want

Whats the best situation to use ignite? ATM im using it to stop enemies getting into melee range thanks to the fear component but i want to be able to use the huge damage too. Do i have to wait until the higher levels to get more status effect powers or this the best method of ignite for a ranged style blaster?

Depends on your secondary. If you got a immobilize (fire, elec, ice, dev, psi) you can use it to keep the mob locked. Same for any hold power (AR iceray, secondairy). I got icepatch so its even more fun using ignite.

Added, few mobs are immume to fear, such as drones.

Could be my bad, the defender versions of the psi blast powers are all listed as 100ft base, where as the blaster ones are 80ft.
I'll check tonight what the game says.

Most AV level foes are immune to fear, Ignite is the most damaging power in the set vs them.
