Wait, what?

[/ QUOTE ]Horde versus Alliance. It's the core of the entire game, like it or lump it. Sure there's non-PvP servers, but population wise they really suffer.

Characters:
The Heroic Mary Grace (50)
The Mystical Thunderspark (50)
The Candy-loving Little Jenny (50)

Ahahaha, no.

Most PVP takes place in cross-realm instances. World PVP is basically dead, and PvE servers are thriving. As for "core of the game"...where the heck did you get that nugget from? It's as core to WoW as animated hair is for CoX. People whine without it, but the game doesn't hinge on it.

The other key factor and what makes up a very very very large chunk of their subscribers is the Koren market.

The Korens love grindtastic MMOs (which WoW has a lot of elements of, grind for repuation with factions, the grind for gear etc), they love everyone looking roughly the same with no individuality in sight (something which CoH has the opposite philosphy of while WoW has the tier armour sets which encourage people to all look alike in the end). They love everything loot based as well (which WoW hinges on).

The reason CoH failed over there was because it was neither grindtastic nor had loot at the time and everyone was encouraged to look as individualistic as they could.

Take away the Koren market and you've lost 60%+ of WoW's subscribers and brings it down to a still gigantic 3.6 million subcribers but then that would be primarily thanks to it being the most heavily marketed and hyped MMO in history.

A real showstopper!

[/ QUOTE ]The core of WoW is PvE, mainly raiding. PvP-focused players are a minority. WoW is only a PvP-heavy MMO if you compare it to something like CoH which is very light on PvP.

The core of WoW is either grinding, or walking, I cant work out which you do more of so it has to be one of those. PvP in WoW is as much of a joke as it is in CoH/V

"Well, they found my diary today.
They were appropriately appalled
at the discovery of the eight victims
They're now putting it all together.
Women wrapped in silk
with one leg missing
Eight legs, one body, silk,
spider, brilliant!"

I'm just a bit lost as to why people keep comparing CoH to WoW. Different player base:

Sci Fi vs. Fantasy
New Game vs. Game based on established universe
New Publisher vs. Established Publisher

Different graphics
Different gameplay

So - how can you compare them fairly?

Going back to the OP - no, I can't see it being free. I don't see why it needs to be, either. It's not breaking the bank. It's updated at a steady(ish) pace. There are extras to buy. Money being paid in pays for these developments.
