I've been playing this game for almost 18 months. But have to confess I have no idea what a max min char is or what it means?.

Please keep the answers simple I'm an old man whose brain is going

Basically, it's a character which has been twinked out with the (current) perfect build, all the right sets, all the right enhancements.

The term originally comes from PnP where you have many, many more stats to play with allowing you to do some serious maths to calculate exactly where to spend your time improving your character to the point where it fulfills its role to the best of its mathematically perfect ability.

The phrase is Min/Max
And (if PnP means pen and paper) as Ravenswing said it comes from the days of Table top, dice, Roleplaying games.
What it refers to basically is maximing your charecters potential by assesing the value of each choice available to you.
To Min/Max a charecter
To literaly Minimise it's weakness and Maximise it strengths.

@Alphane: Aye, PnP is Pen and Paper.

@mereman: I actually do use Mid's Planner to check values on enhancement placement before I consider slotting, but I don;t generally worry about it unless I manage to get my hands on a set item which looks interesting and I want to see what I can tweak without upsetting the normal enc bonus levels too much.

I tend to use Mids also, helps as Ravenswing has stated to look at the numbers and best bonuses for your toon, I think it also adds some extra end game content to go out find the sets you want..

I thought Max/Min came from MMOGs or possibly table top games (Warhammer etc.). In PnP in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s we used to call it power gaming (and still do, actually). Maybe it’s an American PnP phrase though as I can’t say any of us (the girls and guys I PnP game with) have really mixed with American PnP people.

This was my belief too.

"Well, they found my diary today.
They were appropriately appalled
at the discovery of the eight victims
They're now putting it all together.
Women wrapped in silk
with one leg missing
Eight legs, one body, silk,
spider, brilliant!"

In second edition D&D, some stats where useless to some classes, so if using a point buy system, you would put the usless stats to a minimum, and maximise the more useful stats. This lead to extremely dumb paladins.

I really should do something about this signature.

Uuuuurrrggghh.... think I'll give that a miss then. I believe I saw the word 'maths' TWICE in that paragraph.
