Time to clean up this city

The topic for today’s post is: level 50 content and street crime.

I believe there have been comments made in the past that there is (or was prior to recent issues) too little level 50 content, so borrowing on what an NPC said in passing what do people think about introducing an honour system. Allow me to explain further.

I believe there are two possible ways for this to work.

1 – My preferred method

Once a toon hits the big 50, the XP bars are removed, and replaced with an honour ranking (similar to the system used for arena / pvp).

For each street crime the hero stops (i.e. mugging, or vandalism) the hero is awarded honour points. To prevent mass farming of this new feature the honour points should work along the same lines as XP, i.e. defeating a -5 villain won’t give you anything.

As a hero’s honour ranking increases they are awarded titles, badges, costume parts, or even new powers (I’m thinking of giving access to the lvl 1 AT power e.g. throwing knives). For the badges they could be linked to both the honour ranking and the types of crime prevented, so there could be a set of badges for stopping muggings, and a set of badges for preventing vandalisms.

If this idea was taken forward, I’d also like to see new street crime introduced to expand on the idea above allowing more badges, such as graffiti, smash and grabs, and riots.

Just side stepping for a moment – riots – with the introduction of code for Riki Invasions and coming soon Zombie hordes, what do people think about random riots across the city? Not as a special event, just an addition to regular game play just as GM spawns already are?

2 – the other way

While talking over this idea with a friend – they suggested it might be possible to implement some of the above ideas into “day jobs”, which while it is an idea, it’s not one I prefer.

I haven’t made my mind up yet on if “day jobs” are a good idea or not – so I’m not going to go into detail here.

Now I know that this idea will not appeal to everyone, just as PvP doesn’t appeal to everyone. But that’s one thing I think is good about this suggestion, like the introduction of PvP, no-one is forced to work through this content if they don’t want to.

Finally – apologies to the CoV’ers out there – I’m not sure if this is a feature that could be adapted for CoV. If anyone has some thoughts on this please post them.

About the first suggestion.

I doubt that this will work well for an end game thing. Level 50 heroes should be used for better things then stoping street muggings. However I think the idea has merrit for heroes of every level. We should be out of the missions and into crimefighting on the streets more often. So I like the idea(s) implemented to encourage us to stop the random muggings out there.

What GrinningSpade said TBH, I do like the idea but it certainly shouldn't be limited to 50s. However it also shouldn't be like rep is now and easier for non-fifties to earn, that is just back to front IMO.

Hmmm...

Well, I don't agree with putting in endgame grind for the sake of something to do. That isn't really adding level 50 content, it's just introducing a greater level of grind. It probably would be cheap and easy to implement, which is its only advantage.

As for adding it for lower level PCs: well, you get XP and Inf for stopping muggings and the like, so why add even more reward for it? That's just pushing the risk/reward factor further and further toward the reward side for no real reason.

Disclaimer: The above may be humerous, or at least may be an attempt at humour. Try reading it that way.

Because someone has to protect the innocents from the predators and that is the hero base.

I think that reputation is something you can earn but also lose. Save people and you will get reputation, but leave them for their fate and your reputation will dwindle. This could be represented with for example the colouring of somebodies name. With the nice benefit that as soon as said person reaches 100% rep the baddies in town just know that he is on patrol in their neighbourhood and try acting innocently (ie not bothering people agout their belongings all the while whispering to watch out for you know who) while he is close by. I think that would be fun.

That would mean that Atlas will be a safe place when all those heroes gather for a cossie contest

Not sure I like this for the extra grind. I mean that's great for folks that like unadulterated grind, but... when my heroes hit 50 there's a few reasons to bring them out:

1. Task forces - fits the comic book genre nicely. "There's a big threat, and only Alpha Boy, the Human Fish, Copyright Violation and Banging Donk can stop it."

2. Laughs - stopping a lvl 1 mugging with lvl 50 characters can be funny. "Help help I'm being mugged OH MY GOD YOU FRIED HIM WITH HEX VISION AIIIIIEEE!" Gets old after a few mins, depending on how drunk you are.

3. Ding Assist - helping someone else get a toon to 50 that's nearly there. It's quite refreshing to be on a team of 50 or nearly-50s, though making a movie of it would burn ILM's budget for the next decade.

Nice idea - The only street hunting I've ever realy done is between Atlas plaza and the sewer entrance,(oh and when I need to for an arc) It would be nice if there was more encouragment to do so.
Perhaps using the system (I think they use) to have all street mobs Con even to your level and perhaps as an adaptation of something someone suggested perhaps a minor amount of debt for every 'incident' you ignore nothing major just enough to encourage people to turn off the Super travel and street hunt between missions.
It's an enviroment for adventure that is defenitly underused.

Off to Tank 'King of Beers' AV for a couple of hours single handed.

Its a nice idea, actually. But as others have said, if its thought about it needs to be something thats worth it, and isnt a hassle. Limiting it to 50s is an uncertainty, especially if people dont see it as worth it.
But worth thinking about. The only thing I dont see is the riots, not in CoH. Thats smacks a bit too much of various bits in comics, and anti-supers. In CoV, however? -peers outside Fort Darwin in Mercy, and at the mob- Sergeant, pass me the pleb rifle!

I think this should be limited to 50's as this will add enjoyment (not saying there is none just saying it will add to it) I guess I should say it would add incentive, I mean at the moment I’m trying my hardest to get my first 50 and I would probably enjoy it more if there was the incentive to unlock new items of clothing, secondary power pools or an extra power pool. Definitely the basis of a great idea (as usual).

True there should be incentive for lvl 50s to continue playing, but saying that lower lvls cannot 'take the fight to the streets' just feels....wrong. Definately something to work on, but it would need some thought, as always.

In my opinion the game is too grindy as is... no need to add any more levels of grindness to it. Especially with the day job, mission creator and assorted badge worthy stuff coming on. Also, day jobs have a "on patrol/committing crimes" setting already. For which I'm guessing badges will be awarded.

Funny but true. I do feel that the endgame content would be more appealing, if it was missions and TF's instead of farming in the streets. However, as suggested, if this would be to all levels, it could be a nice addition.
