Laptops...

Recently I inherited a small amount of cash from from Grandfather, there are several things I plan on buying with the money one of which is a laptop.

Is it likely that I will be able to find a laptop for under £500 that will play CoH/EVE/GW/WoW etc? Not especially interested in looks (graphics) merely to be able to get in game for idle half hours in my local connected cafe. So having minimum graphics isn't an issue.

If it is a possibility what sort of graphics chip set should I be looking at?

Any suggestions would also be handy.

Most definitely NOT an integrated solution with Intel anything. You'll want a pure standalong graphics chipset but if you can avoid the 8600m chipsets, they're ALL faulty but Nvidia is trying to cover it up. Something with a Dual Core T series intel CPU, 2Gb Ram and a stand alone gfx card would be ideal.

Something like This would be more than sufficient. If you could push your budget a little then This has a 17" Screen, better for playing games on but I can't see what graphics chip it has.

Looks like it has Nvidia GeForce 8400M on board

I've been on the look out for a laptop myself, and recalled seeing that machine on the PcPro site. I'd recommend the site if you're looking for reviews - I've found it quite a usefull resource. They're not a gaming specific magazine, but they do carry out 3D benchmarks on most reviews.

to be honest if you buy a 'gaming' laptop for playing games, spec it with a 8600m and it falls over and dies after 3years due to the chipset melting then i seriously doubt you're 'gaming' on it at all as 3 years down they line it wont beable to play modern games anyway.

i'd not recommend ati either, the graphical quality is different, and unfortunately games do not take advantage or even use ati graphics settings as well as their previous generation nvidia comparitive model.

this we saw very evidently when we moved our desktops to ati, and the fps improved but introduced many querks and made several games ugly with there failure to do certain features which we took for granted on the nvidia.

basically i'd buy an nvidia and live with the heat problems, its for gaming so it'll be getting replaced anyway, probably before a 3 year warrenty expires.
