Patrons

Hi everyone just returned to the game after a few months and I decided to continue my SS/WP Brute, currently lvl 40.

Thing is, I'm not too sure about which patron I should choose (if I should choose one at all) so I'd just like to hear your thoughts and ideas

Considering the SoA get the brute pool, i'm going to offer my opinion based on what works well on my fortunata.

Before I do, I'd just like to say that the brute patron powers, simply aren't all that...unlike the Corruptor/Dominator powers, they simply don't offer much besides a looong cooldown pet (which you need to take 2 powers to unlock), or a bit of ranged damage.

Hence, unless you're picking one for concept, i'd recommend the Mu Mastery pool (Scirocco), for the [Electrifying Cages] power. Fast animation time, excellent radius, and a decent duration immobilise. Plus it's pretty quick to recharge)

Plus, if you can spare the cash/have the luck to come across the immobilise purple proc (chance to hold), firing off 33% of the time, it becomes an *excellent* attack chain opener.

Just my 2 inf, irrespective of all that, don't worry about it too much, as most people would skip the powers altogether, and just go for the patron whose arc they've yet to experience/like the most.

Hope this is somewhat helpful

Edit: Also, welcome back!

Whatever you do, don't pick [Electrifying Cages] from Mu Mastery. It'll prevent your Foot Stomp from knocking stuff down, which would be terrible.

Overlooked that entirely!

All right. I looked on it and decided to follow my concept. I went for the mace mastery (hope that wasn't a bad decision ). thanks everyone for taking your time and enlighten me with your inputs

Both of my brutes have gone Mu mastery. For both of them this was partly due to concept, but I still think it is the best of the (rather boring) brute pools. This is because both the single target blast and the aoe blast are very quick animating, and so are great for slotting into attack chains to help quickly build fury.

In more detail:

Looking at the single target blasts, animation time wise Gloom and Mu Lightning have the edge over Mace Blast and Spirit shark as the first two animate in around 1sec whereas the latter take over 2 and 3(!) seconds respectively. Mace blast has the added detriment of causing redraw. So from the purely dps and fury building point of, Gloom and Mu Lightning have the edge. I prefer the Mu ST as the damage is front loaded (gloom is dot but more powerful).

Looking then at the AOEs. Here the mace and leviathan aoes are the two most powerful, but again they are slower to activate than the Mu and Soul mastery aoes. The way i play brutes is to use quick attacks to build fury so that my big hitters hit harder! The leviathan aoe has the added disadvantage of being a cone, which is less handy than the sphere effects of the other 3 when you are right in the middle of the fight (which is obviously where u want to be bruting!). So again, Soul Mastery and Mu Mastery have the edge over the other two. This time i prefer the soul mastery aoe (dark obliteration) as it kicks out less damage, the damage is (iirc) not DOT unlike ball lightning. Both are a good quick follow up to foot stomp.

On to the immobilises. Again, the MU mastery immobilise is the quickest to fire. It also has the advantage of being a sphere (whereas the soul mastery and mako immobilises are cone, which as indicated above is less handy when you're in the thick of things.) However the web envelope has an additional features compared electrifying fences. As stated above, electrifying fences does -knockdown/knockback, not good for brutes who use this as dmg mitigation (like one of mine does). Web envelope however does not stop knockdown/knockback so your footstomp will still mitigate damage in that way. But the immobilise does have -fly (handy for longbow eagles etc), -run speed (handy for bosses who like to run, I'm lookin at you agent crimson) and -recharge (handy against...everything!) Because of this, alot of ppl pick the Mace set for the decent immobilise.

Pets I won't talk about as I have no experience of them and honest I can't imagine I would ever take them.

So there you go. In summary, I wouldn't go Leviathan Mastery, Mu mastery is the best at building fury (imo) with soul mastery a close second and Mace mastery has the most useful immobilise. Don't worry if you think you've picked the wrong patron, Positron has hinted that we may be able to respec patrons at i13 (although that is a while away!) I know my Leviathan Dominator will be glad to respec out!

Or Lightning Clap. Sadly both of these melee sets use Knockdown as a primary form of mitigation.
