If it's hanging in the same place, right after you click AGREE to the EULA, I still disagree it's a hardware problem. A poorly configured router, or blocked firewall, would make the game appear to lock up too.

Agreed with FFM. If it is able to connect to the *patcher*, which it does before you click 'Next' to get to the EULA screen, then you have a good internet connection, and the game is installed, and as we said, nothing in your spec seems to imply it would fail to play the game, especially in safe-mode.

My money's on the hotel's firewall/port blocking.

ok i dont agree but i have no way of testing it till i change hotel, i have no problem running net based testing software or youtube etc, i still think its hardware gased ty for your help will just have to go cold chicken

Those programs won't be using the same ports as the game does though, so those tests aren't really valid. There are thousands of ports through which you can send data, you know (in fact, 65535 IIRC); and each one is separate to the others.

Here's a suggestion for you (I'll need someone else's Search-fu to help with where you need to go, though) - download and install Pingplotter, select the CoH server IP and THEN start the game, in safe mode.

And watch Ping-plotter's track. I do not know what the outcome will be, but if you're being port-blocked by the hotel, I expect it should become pretty darn obvious.

ok i have downloaded all new drivers and its getting one stage futher, i think it may be a GFX problem as i have just got a message that COH was unable tyo run in native resolustion and now in task manager its just showing as not responding, also one of the CPUs is running at max while the other is idle??

when i forcefully stop COH through task manager the screen returns to normal resolution??
its now going to the US updater aswell for some reason, how can i change this back to EU?

(going from memory, here, so bear with me)

965 may supposedly run CoX - but very, very badly, with a low frame rate.

Processor in those laptops are either a 1.6ghz dual core Intel or a 1.7ghz dual core intel..

Chances are, because the D range of Dell's are primarily for Business use, it won't have a decent sized amount of Graphics memory (im thinking 64mb, or possibly 128mb) on that 965 graphics chip.

We have about 1000-2000 users at work with that exact PC. They don't play games on them, because they aren't really built for gaming. I'm honestly not surprised CoX isn't running on it. Our staff use it mainly for presentations and Word documents, etc. y'know.. business use

Dipstar, If you are able to, make sure to go to Dell's website - support.euro.dell.com and download the latest graphics driver, sound driver, chipset driver and if necessary, upgrade the bios to make sure you're running on all the very latest.

On Dell's website you can choose which machine you have and it will display ll the relevant drivers for you.

edit: after typing this i saw the post above, about drivers already downloaded.

This may help - 'borrowed' from a recent thread

Change 'CoH Shortcut' -> 'Properties' -> 'Target'
from:
"C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe"
to:
"C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.EU.exe"
and check 'Start In' reads:
"C:\Program Files\City of Heroes"
and then change:
C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe
to:
C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.EU.exe
finally check that:
C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CityOfHeroes.exe
is set to .exe not .eu.exe

The locations above are for the default CoH/CoH Heroes and villains editions.

thats it then, im going to have to buy me a laptop if the work one cant cut it anymore...[censored] dell [censored], i thought CoH would run on anything more powerfull than a calulator, i suppose its impossible to change from the on board GFX card with it being a DELL PC, cant really complain to much it jkust means i will have to actually do some work now when on site instead of playing games.

edit and to think the PC came with Vista installed until it was changed that would have been fun to use, i cant get over thats its slower than my celeron based 3 yr old laptop

Incidentally, I've just installed CoH on my new laptop, which has a T2330 1.6 gig CPU and the same video as yours, a lower spec machine, and it runs fine. A little slow, but fine, so your laptop CAN run CoH. It's the hotel internet connection that's blocking you.

ok FFM rub it in a bit more why dont you You [censored]
im now starting to think it might be something to do with firewall, to be honest i thought "OK then i will watch a DVD only to find out the DELL/work fooks hadnt put any DVD codecs on the machine.....*slaps head

edit FFM what it just booted straight away??? no hassles no safemode?? if it is the portal its been the first one ive ever come across that wont run CoH and considering i spend 6months away from home a year i find it very suprising even more so cos im in Eire that has free internet for all hotel guests (due to the spending of the EU)

Yep, it loaded up no problems, but then, my firewall and router are correctly configured. Just because a hotel allows free web access, doesn't necessarily mean they are happy with guests gaming over the internet, which uses quite a bit more bandwidth than just web browsing or email and would likely affect their other guests. You really should try talking to the hotel staff, and ask them if they allow online gaming through their connection.
