Well, some more info would help; you've not exactly given us a lot to go on, have you?

There's a common problem with the installer not creating a shortcut to the EU game, just the US one. It's easy to fix and there's actually a sticky at the top of the tech forum telling you how to get the EU client (it's a very small download). Alternatively, you CAN just rename the US file to "Cohupdate.EU.EXE", and update your shortcut accordingly; though it's preferable to get the proper EU client.

Well, the full PC spec first, also what OS you're using, and what error messages you're getting.

So, what's the spec of the machine? What OS are you using? What drivers are you using? Have you tried CoH in safe mode from the launcher? I really can't help you without more info...

Spec required:

What processor is it?
What graphics card does it have?
What driver set is it using FOR that graphics card?
What Service Pack of XP are you on?
Do you have a Firewall active?
How are you connecting to the internet?

We're trying to help, dipstar. Honestly, we are. We're not talking down to you, I promise. We want you to enjoy the game as much as the next guy.

I've even started trawling computer sellers trying to find a Dell T7100, and that's the chip. Can you give us the model of the PC? We can pull the spec from PCWorld, or Dell themselves, and THEN we can offer some more advice.

We need to know what the graphics card is, and what driver version you're running. Without that, we can't tell you if it's capable of running CoH or not. If you want us to help you, we're happy to do so, but you need to help us to help you, and for that we need the information Shadowe outlined; all of it.

Hell, even the precise laptop model number would help. At least then we could go look it up on Dell's website.

One thing that does stick out is that you say you're on a hotel internet? CoH uses ports that are frequently used by some popular p2p programs, so it's possible the hotel is actively blocking those ports, either because of that or because they don't allow online gaming through their portal. If that's the case, we won't be able to help you.

Come back to us with the laptop model number though, at least then we can tell you if the machine meets the game requirements.

the CPU is a 1.8 duel core celeron, with 2 gig of ram, i guessing for that speck that the GFX card is the issue, as it will be most likely a on board Intel chipset, which basically means it's a no go.

sorry ppl if i seemed [censored] off...its a dell latitude d630 the thing is the ppl im working for just upgraded me to thIS pc and ive been running coh for the last 3 yrs on an older version....AND ITS DXP WEEKEND FOR GODS SAKE

edit: thanks for taking the time to answer me it is appreciated

OK, that helps a LOT. Thanks.

According to Dell, that machine comes in a couple of flavours, including 2 possible video cards. Are you able to go to the Device Manager (Right click My Computer->Manage->Device Manager->Display Adapters) and tell us which one you have? It'll be either an Nvidia Quadro NVS 135M, or an Intel X3100.

Either of them SHOULD be able to run CoH, at least on absolute minimum settings, but it might require updated video drivers to do so. The X3100 though, isn't really a chipset that's condusive to gaming... I know, I just bought an Acer laptop with the same chipset, though I've not had chance yet to try CoH on it.

I still think, though, that the hotel internet might be the root cause. You could try asking them if they're blocking some ports, but I very much you'll get anyone capable of answering that question...

ty FM, i have intel 965 express chipset.....and the hotel arnt blocking anything?

hehe i think i might just drop thi [censored] thing in the shannon

OK, that's the X3100 then. Have you tried visiting Dell's website and seeing if they have newer video drivers? Also, have you tried clicking the "Safe Mode" checkmark on the launcher? That will set the game to minimum video settings.

As for the hotel, you put a question mark there... Are you asking me, or are you not sure if they are or not? It may be that they're not, but that whatever connection system they're using has a router than needs the correct game ports opening.

At what point exactly does it lock up? On the updater? On the "LOADING" bit of text? On the CoH loading picture? On logging in? On selecting a character?

it gets to the loader and i agree to the eula (honest i read it every time!!) but it dosnt go any further just black screen with the egg timer of boredooooom
i will try safe mode now

Posted

its now coming up with US client FFS
grrr and safemode has just put my PC into the unPC spastic mode so i feel like im special (sorry!)

Posted

If it won't go any further than the EULA, then that really does point towards a connection issue. If the windows firewall is disabled, then there's a very good chance the hotel internet is either deliberately blocking ports, or just isn't configured properly to let game traffic through.

Have you tried any other games on the laptop?

EDIT: Not Windows Safe Mode. Just the game Safe Mode.. A checkbox on the launcher itself.
