Sorry for the rather Tolkein esq summoning in the thread title, but it feels only right to summon you with a sentence that should be bellowed.

Here is my idea. I've discussed this with a few people, and feel it should be open to further discussion:

Like cheese, I love good PvP. Bad PvP compared to it tastes a little off. When players get together and *have fun* fighting each other, I feel there are few things in this game that compare.

Thus, Like Spider's Mothership raids and Cha'ron's Task forces, I would be very up to running a weekly (set date) Arena PvP evening

Arena, because I dislike the PvP zones. They've become whiny zones mainly for Griefing and Farming

This is in the Defiant section because this applies to defiant only, i've got nothing onionside.

I understand hardcore PvPers may punch me in the ovaries for this, but I'm merely offering to host/organise this event. Plan is:

Team PvP > All, imo (but that's what the thread is for, for discussing). So much fun. 3 vs 3 or 2 vs 2 matches.

Round Robin Duels (some system of fairness...the Team PvP can account for AT weaknesses, hence any well build troller/scrapper/PvP toon will win this each week. hence my hesitation)

SG matches.

Gladiator matches (am a big fan)

Each will have a prize for the winner (Inf/recipe/any ideas?) And there will be a hall of fame kept (somewhere, can keep a thread here?)

If this generates little interest, I'll keep it small and hope people will warm to it. PvP can be so much fun when it's comfortable, and not unfriendly.

What do people think. Are people in favour of this.

And please, as i've seen now and then in these forums, no personal attacks, I'm asking for you opinions, i'm very enthusiastic about running this, it's the manner in which it's run i'm asking for comment on

And sorry for the layout/length...late night, lots to drink, etc.

Look forward to reading your comments

I've never PvPed, and I don't think my builds would be any good with PvP, but if it's on a night I can make I'll call in and watch.

Maybe I'll learn something and plus I think any player organised stuff should be supported.

Keep up the good work. Maybe we could call it Fight Club.

Hell - it could be fun, consider me interested. I might dust of the ol' Fire Blaster for it.

Just watch out for the 'win at any cost' players.
i.e. Players that have specced a certain optimal PVP build, usually IO'd up to the hilt.
SO many changes have been made, to accommodate PVP in game. That for these few to constantly feel the need to win, takes any fun out of it. Altho I dont particularly like PVP I have dabbled - FNFC, Arena, the zones are rarely visited.

This is just my 2 inf.

Personally I wish you all the best and hope it goes well, its just in my Personal Experience, the above will eventually happen, its just how soon...

While this will not bother hardcore PVP'ers. It will not encourage any new players to join, which is what I think you are also after if you really want to make this work.
This is not an anti pvp post, its just I have done enough to realise the above

I Didn't take it as an Anti-PvP post, just a sensible reservation about the Idea that I too have. Perhaps there could be a way to prevent that? Like: The same toon cannot be used in the same event 2 weeks in a row, or something.

You've hit the nail on the head though, Encouraging new players into PvP (which, at best, is enjoyable by accident, in the Zones), without drawing some imaginary line over which, once you step (too unbeatable), you're unwelcome.

I do feel that individual matches (I stress Team PvP once more) and those who compete should be able to delegate sensibly amongst themselves, but that may only end in tears.

I don't know, perhaps we'll learn through experience. I'm happy to accommodate 'l33t PvP0rz', but I hope they've got the sense to be lenient in letting more casual players enjoy it too, in a more communal sense

I'm up for this!

It's been a while since I've done any sort of PvP and would be nice to give everyone a good helping of -acc

Depending on the times I'd like to make an apperance too in various forms (athough I've only 3 toons over 40 and they're all controllers).

So I'm interested but usually unable to get on before 9 (although I'll happily come along late if its still running then)

Well, there is interest, which is comforting :P

What day does everyone have in mind? I don't want to conflict with anything (Mothership raids, popular TF evenings)

Tuesday is an excellent day for me (Day off at Uni), so making the preparations is easier on me. My idea =

Every Tuesday. 8pm onwards, Pocket D

The problem of level restriciton came to me today, so perhaps 2 classes? lvl 38 (whatever that 'weight title' is called) and No exemp (lvl 50). If there is sufficient interest for lowbie pvp (just on DOs or SOs, so 13/23) then am all for having that too.

So not tonight, but next tuesday, give this a run through? Start with Team PvP with whoever turns up, round robin style (Team A vs B, A vs C, C vs B, whichever won the most, wins. etc)

Please post any ideas/ suggestions. There are bound to be plenty of holes in this idea, and you guys are the ones to find them *wink* :P

Yes - because every PvP'er has to win no matter what.

It's why I'm bring my super awesome Issue 6 built Fire/Ice/Fire. Better watch out I'ma hold you... hold you so I win!!!

Edit: If any of your post was because of events at the Radio Rumble I'd just like to add my 2 inf and remind you that at those levels my IO's and my teams (though only two out of the 6 where IO'd up "to the hilt" and both those are designed for fights at 50) would be worth the same as your IO's or SO's or HO's because of enhancement scaling and exemplar.

Its not in reference to any event at all, it is from my OVERALL impression of PvP,(and you know that I have been here long enough) - unless you have 'the build'...

PvE and PvP builds are vastly different
which is why the 2 will never see eye to eye.

anyway before this get sidetracked too much, as I said, I wish this all the best. Good Luck to all

There's nothing special about this game, in this respect. This is why the professional sporting leagues have multiple divisions, sorted by past performance: so that people of roughly equivalent advantage (training, experience, equipment, natural talent, whatever) are placed against each other. A person or team who keeps winning is simply not allowed to play against the new people - they have to play against people who have demonstrated similar capabilities.

Nobody's ever come up with a better solution. Of course, that does mean you need to keep a significant number of people playing on a regular basis.

welcome to the forums!

also, that's very true. I do intend to keep paper records of it, so if there is enough interest, and it grows to a level where divisions are a good solution, i should be able to keep on top of it.

W00T W00T! I'll be there .

Also note that Dark Spider often drives some zone PvP on Thursdays. Zonal however. Also, however, any I've been to so far have been a lot of fun and very friendly.

Ah, that's quite recent isn't it? Born from a rather Awesome RV scrap.

yes, those are very fun!. Glad i won't clash with that.

I think the main reason i've tried to push arena, is that it's instanced. Less chance of (wrongly) asking people to leave X and Y alone because it's an 'event'

I want to play against better people too though . Best way to learn and improve. I've spent the better part of whole matches getting a wholesome beatdown and running for my life but it definitely makes you better .

Also, an arena night would be a nice, and welcome, addition.

Regards to leaving people alone. Well those zone nights go down pretty well with lots of chat between sides etc, so there's not much confusion that there is actually PvP going on. Most times the factions are so involved going against each other, the wayward one or two wanting to be left alone probably are. But if not, well, a busy zone one night in a week is a better thing to have really.

I'll be there, i'm always free on tuesday so will be able to attend weekly

Also like to add a thankyou for arranging this...i'll send afew tells ingame and see if i can get afew more people to attend alongside me

Posted

why is everything always during the week? can we please plan a pvp event towards the weekend???

speakin for myself if its during the week, i can almost certainly not make it

Sorry to hear that Vixen

Apologies that it's mainly based on when I'm free. I could probably do something Saturday evenings providing that this goes down well. I was torn between the two tbh, week or weekend. I don't want to clash with ship-raids and Task forces (which, at least for me, are set for weekends a while in advance at times)

and @Princey, *grin* at your Lolcat :P, semi-welcome to the forums from me (3rd post, sorry if they're months apart :P), and letting people know would be a blessing, thankyou!

I intend to let a DefiantEvents MOD know, put it in the MotD and prepare for next tuesday

Dividing people by level of skill/power? most interestings I must says as I'd like to steal the highest tier while it's still possible so people can strive to one day take my PvP team down down, as I agree that beating people around with close to no experience or a build with no real good advantages gives close to no satisfaction at all.

It is a good idea to divide people by how much experience/win/loss they got against each other, this way people wont get too discouraged to fight against people who probably will win over and over again(being the same one they keep fighting).

While it might seem arrogant that I might place my self up at the very top at the moment, it's probably because I'm one of the very few "PvP competetive" people that's left in Defiant, so that's why I'll just show a "Yeah i'm here, just waiting til you get into my division" message :P

But of course, if you need some sort of proving to be done before I can put my self that high, I don't mind showing some sort of demostration of this performance called PvP

So yeah, start making a "PvP people tier list of Defiant" and start putting people against each other who are in about the same skill/level of PvP ranking from lowest to the top, of course, you dont have to make that list public because some would probably not like knowing they're at the very bottom, which would probably discourage them as well.

So what I wanted to say was, nice idea, maybe slowly it will progress into something more competetive when people realize it's okay to PvP other people around who do understand how to take a win/loss well

Posted

Well, steve, no need to be so modest, I had you in mind when I was conjuring images of the 'premier division' teams, that people strive to challenge each week :P

And i'm glad you like it! Hope we'll see you there.

Also: I presume everyone is ok with all of these matches being rated? I guess for those that look at everyone's info card when they meet them (*shifty eyes*), it'll be nice to have numbers other than: 1500. 0. 0. 0. 0. on it :P

I like the idea of rankings and leagues. Can I be in the little league?

Tuesday I can't do every week, but I will get along when I can. I've also spoken to a couple of SG friends today who are interested, I'll pass on the details.

Uhhh. I recollect your team being taken down hard by us 4 V 4 a while ago. Striving wasn't exactly involved either .

That's true, but time always give people time to improve, or what about that time you beat me in a arena fight and then the next fight we had, you scored no kills and I did about..was it 9 kills :P? But it was a clear difference anyway, and lately it kinda got boring when my teams started dominating in zones like warburg to the point that I even had to hide in the boat for people to take a while to take my team down(it really is unfair to have a prepared team ).

I'm not really angry because of your claim, since it's sort of a challenge which I do like(rarely seems to happen )

Anyway no hard feelings or so really, and enjoy the xp curve wooooooooooooot!
