Everything can work in pvp - to a degree.

Something like an Ice/Energy Melee or Fire/Energy Melee Tank work well 1v1, in small teams and can tauntbot nicely with reasonably high survivability in teams.

They're also a bit more newbie friendly than say a Blaster or Controller.

Well ice/energy tanker is friendly for PvP but to be honest I have found mine to be a bit meh in Pve. It is a good solid build dont get me wrong but I think EM is a bit boring for a new player.
From what I have seen but not played myself I have seen spines/regen scrappers who can mix it up nicely in PvE and PvP. Maybe not the uber PvP build but looks like a nice all round toon to play.

work out what level of PvP you want to play at, energy melee tanks are only of use once they get their level 38 power AND have it slotted. Its a long haul untill you get there.

Fire/Superstrength tank is going to be your easiest way in for all ranges, its toggle light, tons of hit points, great heal and with firey embrace + rage and KO blow you will be laughing

Some basic rules in pvp (which are its defaults, in fact) :
- no zonal attacks when you're a melee at (the way the pvp is played make them utterly useless)
- if you're a melee at and want to try group pvp or duel against ranged ats, you'll need to stun/immo or to have ranged attacks (and to do great damages), which means pools like energy (stun and damages), stone (immo which detoggle acro), spines (ranged)...
- if you play a tank, you'll risk to be in a group which whill ask you to be a taunt-bot. Very pleasant way to play.
- if you play a brute, you'll never see your fury growing, except in melee duels.
- if you are a ranged at, you'll need great debuffs (rad...) and damages which are not much resisted (psi, fire, everything except smash/letal)

I think they mean only keep Single Target attacks (though i guess they could just aswell mean no Zone Temp powers).

Any in case, its quite a blanket statement to make, which if followed could very well hurt a new player's build depending on the attack.

I mean that a melee at just don't need zonal attacks, since it has nearly never more than one opponent at range.

Group pvp is not a real fight, it's more a rabbit hunting "everybody after the fleeing squishiest", and so the melee ats are just ignored by their opponents (except for debuffs). It's why a melee at needs stuns or bigs immos, to hope touching a running squishy more than one or two times.

Yes, scOulOu means avoid AoE attacks.

I'd say AoE attacks are good if you go against a MM

If that MM sucks, or your AoE attacks have a VERY wide radius (60 feet).

I'm maybe unlucky, but I really rarely see mm in arena pvp (the pvp I practice the more often).

Yeah its because it isn't as easy to fight with as say a typical well.. anything really (except WS's).

Masterminds require more planning and set up time which is detrimental to their health. Though there are a couple of really powerful builds that if played/slotted correctly is right up there with the FotM builds (Necro/Poison/Dark i'm looking at you! )
