I have been away from CoX for a few months because of starting a new job and I have decided to try a controller for the first time. I have been looking through the forum and I have decided to try earth/storm. so far I am only lvl 6 but loving every secind of it. This is my planned build. I was hoping for some advice on moves and slotting. Anything would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance -

Since this is your first trolley, it will take you a while to figure how to use this combo safely. You got the tools to control huge spawns by yourself, but it requires some experience. Hope you give it a try tho, it's an excellent combo and you should have great fun with it.

It is a excellent control combo, but you may want to catch a scrapper or blaster and make them put the pain on the enemies, because until you get your later powers, dealing enough damage will be hard

Congrats on your 300th post and thanks for the excellent build. I have got hasten into my build now but I was wondering if you think its worth me taking either salt crystals or stone prison for extra control or should i take a different power?

I'd probably take Earthquake at 18 and leave Stamina off until 22.

Also I'd try to slot Gasses for Holds too (if it takes it, I'm assuming it works like a Placable choking cloud with its to-hit tick hold).

Stone Cages seems overslotted to me. Acc and End should be enough. Really you only need it for is Tornado damage. Quicksand & Snowstorm is good enough to stop things running out of various patches or getting very far when stunned and they won't interfere with all that lovely Knockdown. I'd actually take the single target immob first for damage in the low levels and then replace with Cages in the 20s somewhere with a respec (probably at 27 when you need to replace SOs).

You could probably take an End out of Snowstorm and replace with a Slow to help that out.

Salt Crystals is rubbish, skip it. Stone Prison is good to immobilize AVs or set containment, but you already got Stone Cages. I say go for another power.

Actually, it seems to work quite a bit differently to Choking Cloud, and in a good way. Gasses sequentially summons 6 short duration pseudo pets which cast the Holds. Hold durations help a little but aren't really needed since it's able to stack with itself to hold a boss even without them (see City of Data for details of the pets and their hold powers). Myself I slot it with Recharge IOs and damage procs, since each pseudo-pet has its own chance of the procs firing leading to quite a substantial level of DoT - I have the Positron's Blast, Ghost Widow's Embrace and Neuronic Shutdown procs in mine and the extra damage is very noticeable indeed.

On the subject of procs, it's worth remembering that Lightning Storm takes ranged damage sets, meaning that it will accept a chance for Hold proc from Devastation - works very nicely!

I'd have a recharge in it as well for exactly that purpose - but then my Earth/Storm is very much built around leveraging the damage from Tornado and Lightning Storm so the -KB is very desirable to me.

This is certainly good advice for leveling to 35, though.

Random thoughts...

I'd go with Carni's suggestion regarding Stone Prison: at low levels, unless you're teaming all the time, you need every bit of damage you can get. You can then either respec it out later, or keep it for AVs. It's higher Mag than Stone Cages (which btw can be slotted 2 Acc 1 Endrdx), recharges twice as fast, costs half the end and has better accuracy. Stone Cages also work well with Stalagmites, although Earth/Storm already has tons of control (probably THE most controllery controller). So you might even drop Stalagmites later, unless you want to go for the stuntastic Stalagmites/ Thunder Clap / Fissure combo.

Quicksand is perma out of the box, although it's always nice to stack. You might want an EndRdx in Freezing Rain which you'll be spamming all the time.

Snow Storm: I'd try to slot 2 EndRdx 2 Slows.

VG does take Holds and is worth 6-slotting if possible (no need for Acc though).

You might want to slot an EndRdx in both Tornado and Lightning Storm depending on how much you spam them.

If you decide to go with Stone epic (for concept or otherwise, although the +def shield works well with all the -tht powers), take Fissure instead of Hurl Boulder.

Actually thinking about i11 and the Defense Debuff sets theres a lot to be said for slotting Stone Cages with 3 PROCs later in life (can already take the Immob and AOE Damage one). I've my AOE Immob 3 slotted with damage procs and its pretty cheap and evil (Gravitys Crushing Field).

In fact you've so many AOEs that are just begging for PROCs : Quicksand, Snowstorm, Gasses & Cages. Plus Freezing Rain and Lightning Storm.

Pity Stuns only get that chance of knockdown one.

I like to put procs in Cages to, but sadly (and strangely) only Earthquake will accept the Defense Debuff sets. The rest of Earth control can't be slotted for Def debuff, and won't accept the sets either. It's still proc-tastic, though, and you do get two bites at Def debuff sets with Earthquake and Freezing Rain.

Hmmm, pity that. You can still get the Slow one in Snowstorm and Quicksand, the Immob and AOE Damage in Cages, the hold one(s?) in Gasses and the AOE one in Freezing Rain currently.

That should keep the bank balance nice and low chasing them (although the Slow ones are fairly cheap, especially at low levels the Salvage needed is fairly reasonable).

Using hold durations actually doesnt do much in VG as you wont notice much difference so I'd just stick with 3 recharges and possibly a endurance reduction

The earth powers currently doesnt take the new defense debuff sets. I'm sure this will be corrected in a future i11 build though.

Yep, really it should given that a lot of Grav powers happily accept Slow ones.

On the one hand I agree - and it would certainly be nice to be able to slot them. But on the other, none of the Earth powers except for Earthquake accept normal enhancements for Def debuff either whereas both Ice and Grav powers can normally be slotted for Slow. So I guess it depends on whether being unable to slot Earth powers for Def debuff is a bug or WAI. Personally I was hoping to be able to slot that chance for RES debuff proc all over the place, so I'd like to see it change, too. Can't say I'm entirely optimistic, though...

AFAIK, it's only the 'initial' hold on Volcanic Gasses that is governed by Hold enhancements. Although there are a fair number of ticks, the hold duration only applies to the initial one.

I'm not sure how this affects damage/mez procs - I'm guessing GW's Embrace would potentially only fire off on the first tick of VG (although this could affect multiple targets).

Oh and, advice wise: I have, for the time being, respec'd out of Quicksand as I found that with Snowstorm and various other Slow powers, I didn't need it. Also, due to my rubbishness I found that the area of Quicksand (especially in indoor instances such as warehouses) was sometimes too big resulting in lots of unwanted attention from adjacent mobs. Also, the disorient from Stalagmites (or is it Stalactites?) followed by Stone Cages is often enough control for either your pet/close melee damage or team mates to take care of the ensnared targets.

One thing to remember with Quicksand is that is also has an autohit 25% defense debuff. I open practically every fight with it (from around a corner if possible ) and find it makes a massive difference in how many mobs Stalagmites + Stone Cages hits.

Although I haven't faced them yet (only 33 atm) I imagine it would help a lot with those blasted bubbled-up Rikti drones too.
