Advice on Grav/Storm Build

Hey folks.

I have recently managed to convince my cousin to give CoH a go. He has been watch me play it this week and he quite likes the look of it.

I have done the best I can to explain what the game is all about and the type of characters that he can make in the game. Being that he is a bit of a LOTR fan and has briefly dabbled in WoW (and I mean very brief!), he seems to have aquired an interest in making a magic based controller in the game when he gets it.

Now we have looked at a few guides and used Hero Planner to come up with the following build. I am asking for advice here because dispite the research I have done and suggestions I have made to my cousin based on my experience of playing the game, I can not really say I can give great advice on building a Controller, as I am an aggressive git and have only ever made Scrappers, Tanks and Blasters!

So here is the build we have come up with. All advice is greatly appriciated. I'm hoping that I can give him a solid enough build for his first go, so that he sticks with the game.

Thanks

Only commenting on the grav.

Lift - Personally not worth the damage as you've slotted (although it might be worth "setting" for bonus). I put knockback in mine. While they're in the air they can't hit you . Good soft control.

Gravity Distortion - Lose the end red. Stick in a hold/acc/recharge/dam. Personally I didn't dam this, 2 hold, 2 acc, 2 recharge.

Crushing Field - Drop. Rubbish damage, immob not a hold. Agro magnet.

GDF - Get earlier! It's your best power! I'd also lose the End Red.

Sing - Again I'd suggest loosing damage and puuting some holds in. It's also debatable how useful RechRed is, you can't have multiple sings up and it's pretty damage resistant, so unless you face plant you're unlikely to need multiple casts on same mish.

Propel - Good damage, but very slow.

Wormhole - Good soft control, accs, rechred and stuns her for me.

Cursh - You haven't got. I'd take instead off CF. Nice damage and a good -fly. As it's single target not an agro draw.

Distortion Field - You haven't taken it. It's an interesting power. As long as you've got a good team, who listens/understands it's very good control. On bad teams though be prepared for abuse . Also when everything comes back in phase they will target you.

Here's how I'd build a grav/storm to 40 (SO slotting):

Hero Plan by Mids' Hero Designer 1.21

Level 40 Magic Controller
Primary Power Set: Gravity Control
Secondary Power Set: Storm Summoning
Power Pool: Fitness
Power Pool: Speed

Hero Profile:
Level 1: Lift -- Acc(A), Dmg(5), Dmg(13), Dmg(15), Acc(36)

Level 2: Gravity Distortion -- Acc(A), Acc(3), Hold(3), Hold(5), RechRdx(7), RechRdx(7)
Level 4: O2 Boost -- Heal(A)
Level 6: Hurdle -- Jump(A)
Level 8: Propel -- Acc(A), Dmg(9), Dmg(9), Dmg(13), Acc(37)
Level 10: Hasten -- RechRdx(A), RechRdx(11), RechRdx(11)
Level 12: Steamy Mist -- EndRdx(A), ResDam(15), ResDam(19), ResDam(19)
Level 14: Super Speed -- Run(A)
Level 16: Freezing Rain -- RechRdx(A), RechRdx(17), RechRdx(17)
Level 18: Health -- Heal(A)

Level 24: Crushing Field -- Acc(A), Acc(25), EndRdx(25)
Level 26: Wormhole -- Acc(A), Acc(27), Dsrnt(27), Dsrnt(29), RechRdx(34)
Level 28: Snow Storm -- EndRdx(A), EndRdx(29), Slow(34)
Level 30: Hurricane -- EndRdx(A), ToHitDeb(31), ToHitDeb(31), ToHitDeb(31), EndRdx(34)
Level 32: Singularity -- Acc(A), Dmg(33), Dmg(33), Dmg(33), Hold(37)
Level 35: Tornado -- Dmg(A), Dmg(36), Dmg(36), RechRdx(37)
Level 38: Lightning Storm -- Dmg(A), Dmg(39), Dmg(39), RechRdx(39)
------------

Some comments:

- Lift and Propel are handy for low-level damage, especially when soloing. At higher levels, you'll often get more out of Crush (e.g. containment, immobing AVs).
- Holds need 2 accuracies.
- Crushing Field is actually very useful to use along with Wormhole. The problem is that since it doesn't have -kback, it's less effective than other AoE immobs with Tornado and Lightning Storm.
- Freezing Rain: one of your best powers, take asap.
- Sing: it cycles Crush, Lift and the hold, so it's still useful to slot damage (until HOs).
- I prefer taking SS as a travel power. You need Hasten anyway and with Steamy Mist's stealth (slot res though, not def), you can ghost nicely.
- I'm not a fan of Medicine for controllers (even more so for PvE builds), but that's up to you to decide. O2 boost is handy, but could also be skipped.
- Thunder Clap: not a big fan either. Only stuns minions and Wormhole (take earlier!) is much better.
- I would skip the phase power. Already lots of control with both sets and will just annoy most teams.
- Take Snow Storm, but not before Stamina.

Hope some of this helps!

One thing with Crushing Field. It is an aggro magnet but combines wonderfully with Freezing Rain, stopping things escaping but still letting them slip over.

I wait until the 20s to get it.

With Damage PROCs & Acc/End IOs it becomes a bit evil too.

With Singy I put Damage in, 2 acc/3 damage.1 hold. He spams his holsd anyway and the extra damage is always useful.

*Glances at Oktons build*

Damn, I'm too slow again I'd build it more or less like that. Only difference is I prefer Crush to Lift for the slightly more damage Damage & Containment aspects. But thats a minor difference. I'd probably swap O2 & Snow Storms placements too (or rejig slightly, I find Snow Storm more useful than O2)

Because Tornados knockback is difficult to counter on Grav I usually slot with Stuns rather than damage and use it as a control power.

I'm also a massive fan of Teleport & Hurricane so I'd try and take that as my travel power personally. I love TPing about to Hurricane herd mobs. Crushing Field will help here too, stops them moving but doesn't affect the knockback and pushback effects.

PvP build advice, who cares about pve :P

Uhm, I play a grav/storm, and gonna give you the best advice I can:

Drop lift, please it makes me cry, it wont even work on most ppl since they got KB res, the crappy damage and when ppl are held it refuses to work. Singy can do it to when ppl are immo so I just dropped it. I find gravity/storm usefull to [censored] tanks with it, they wanna taunt then they can have it. But please get the damage out of the hold, its just a waist of slots. acc, mezz and rech is all you need. Because most targets need some stacking to do. And it might be just an idea this is personal so if you don't want it thats your choice :P but drop the damage of lightning storm and put some endmods in it, you can use snow storm and see there end be sipped away ^^...whats a tank without endurence, just a bunch of hp that needs to be cut ^^

Also I don't like fly that much , id rather have a combination of superspeed and leaping, because if you get immo you can always turn on CJ and adds defense and you can use it for bonuses,ss and leaping is just handy if you need to chase ppl around and if they got fly no prob just turn on snow storm and then watch how much they will fly ^^

I have a grav/storm now at lvl 17 using almost Octon's build and I can take on 3 Tsoo conning yellow or an Orange Leut and a yellow minion.

Before freezing rain it can get a little scary at times. FR is that little bit of extra control I have needed to take on the more dangerous groups.

I recently dinged my grav/stormie to 50 and here's how I have her built so far (ignore the actual levels where I have slotted powers - just literally copied my build as I'm looking at the enhancement screen - the powers are more or less in the right order, but the slotting may not be exactly the same as when I was levelling her):

Firstly: I am a damaging troller: that is to say, when my procs hit (which is pretty damn often) then I can do superb damage. She is an a pretty good PvP build (that said, I can have the occasional problem with a ranged tanker/scrapper e.g. hurl boulder, throw spines etc cos of the acc debuff of hurricane not hitting) and with the added +end from 4 Thunderstrikes (2-slotted), Numina, Miracle and Performance Shifter, means that I don't have to bother with end reductions in my primary powers.

I took Crushing Field early - found it an ace combo with Freezing Rain (IIRC, it's the only AoE immob that does NOT negate KB/Knockdown effects such as Freezing Rain/Ice Slick etc) and also means that if I ever am exemplared or pop to BB for a spot of PvP, then I've got a very proc-heavy power to do some damage with (can be quite difficult to do damage at low levels on a troller).

I may make a few tweaks to the build (e.g. maybe drop an acc or a recharge from a couple of powers to slot some of the lv 50 procs) but by and large she's finished. She a really good solo character (have no problems with carnie missions on invincible), great in teams (wooohooo, see all the bad guys fly about with stormie powers) and can hold her own in PvP. I'll not go into the debate of 'should I get Dimension Shift or not' because that's a thread in itself; suffice to say that I didn't take it, purely as I see it as far too situational a power to take (would only use it once in a blue moon whereas most of my other powers, I'm firing off once they've recharged). I didn't bother with Lift as, has been mentioned before, a lot of people have KB immunity/resistance - plus the fact my Crushing Field can do more damage (because of the procs hitting) and I was struggling to squeeze all my powers in (would still like to have taken Hasten - but hey-ho, the Force Feedback procs seem to do an adequate job).

If you can make use of my build then please do - if you really hate the look of it, then that's fine too (procs aren't everyone's cup of tea). Hopefully it'll have given you some inspiration for your build though.
